Decline in traffic but no change in rankings

I'm comparing our best search traffic month in 2011 (March) with our current traffic (April)and have seen significant declines in traffic, despite no change in our rankings or even improved rankings for the same terms. Trying to sort out an explanation.
We have been a white-hat SEO site since our inception over 10 years ago. Our SEO consultant doesn't think we've been affected by any algo changes, at least not to any significant degree.
My only explanation for this possibly anomaly is:
- decrease in the use of the KW terms in search over time (how to determine?)
- generalized increase in PPC instead of organic search driving traffic
- possibility that Adv Web Rankings is no longer accurately collecting SERP rankings
Does anyone have any other thoughts or considerations that might explain the decline in traffic, despite maintenance or improvement in rankings?

Hi Again,
The (Not provided) category isn't showing up in March 2011 because they only started obscuring data from logged in users in October of 2011. This might account for at least some of the traffic difference between 2011 and 2012.

You can potentially get some idea of what terms the (not provided) traffic is coming in on by looking at the landing page. You can also use PPC data, but I'm a little fuzzier on how that is done as AdWords isn't something I use a whole lot of.

I would certainly pay attention to your individual key phrases, but more importantly is the traffic source - check if Bing, Yahoo, Google, Direct or any other traffic channel is causing you the loss of traffic. Once you can determine the problematic traffic source, you can then investigate the keywords in that traffic channel. Analytics allows you to setup custom segments to analyze each traffic source individually. After you can pinpoint the problematic keywords, you should analyze what the competitors are up to as others recommended.

This was the very first thing that came to my mind on the issue. Just because our rankings might not have dropped, it doesn't mean competitors haven't been working away at improving their click-through rates.
I would also look into whether the phrases targeted are no longer the most relevant - this requires a review of your target market(s) and the persona(s) behind them.
Just one example (though not necessarily the best example) is how more people within the search industry are referring to "inbound marketing" rather than just "SEO" lately. Where you need to be careful though is to ensure the language shift like in this example, isn't just industry lingo - that it's actually a shift taking place within your market by people who aren't in the industry itself.

So I can be clear, if there is one landing page for the main KW phrase, but there are a number of KW phrases that drive traffic to that landing page, you are recommending looking at the traffic changes of those individual KW phrases.
For example.... if the main KW phrase and landing page is: healthy eating recipes. But we have 5-10 KW phrases that drive traffic to that landing page... look for the differences in each of those traffic channels as a possible clue. Is that correct?

Before we are comparing 2011 traffic to 2012... I don't see 'not provided' category for the march 2011 period. if there's another way of obtaining this, would appreciate guidance.
I can share that the declines in actual traffic are significant, not even moderate. And this holds true for the top ranking KW terms.... as opposed to the long-tail. making it especially disconcerting.
my great fear is that ppc is starting to overtake organic search search in very competitive search markets... given the number of sponsored offers between Google and something I'v been seeing...buzzads that sits above google adwords in my browser.. hence a total of 8 sponsored links before you can see the organic search options. Not to mention has faint the sponsor link box has become.

thanks... we recently updated our description tags to be more inviting and compelling. Our previous tags were simply re-do of the title tag. so I know our tags improved. I can go back and look at the competition.

You need to research on exactly what channel of traffic has declined and then you can start analyzing the cause of loss. I would spend time analyzing each traffic channel and check for things like unique search queries and unique landing pages per channel. I would also pay attention to the Google and Bing Webmaster tools and check for crawl issues.

Have you looked into long-tail traffic yet, or the traffic being generated by (not provided) search terms?
I've found word clouds to be useful at analyzing changes in long-tail traffic. If you can pull April and March search terms into two different spreadsheets, then use something like Wordle you can get a really generalized overview of your long-tail makeup.
Similar to RankSurge's answer - The other thing you might want to consider is if the format of the SERPs has changed. Are there video, photo, local, or other universal results-or rich snippets-that didn't used to show up alongside your site?

One of the first things I would check would be to see if the competition improved their search snippets. I've had clients enjoy great click thrus at the #3 spot in Google - because their messaging was more in tune with what the person was searching for.
That's one place to start.

Analytics is showing a substantial decrease in referring traffic from Google specific regional domains like .ca, .co.uk, .de, etc vs an uptick from .com starting as of March 2018. Did anyone note when this change happened when Google stopped directing traffic to their regional domains? Was there any press about it (couldn't find any). Ranking drop after sub domain to sub directory migration. Usual?
Hi all, We had our help articles on sub-domain help.website.com. Then we moved it to sub directory website.com/help/. We expected ranking improvement of website.com as there is a wide saying of benefiting from sub domain to sub directory migration. We have noticed that ranking improvement of new sub directory pages (website.com/help/) but not for any main website pages (website.com). I presume that link juice from main website has benefited new sub directory pages but main website lost ranking due to the page rank dilution. Do you agree? Any ideas? Thanks

Can setting up a Domain Forward lead to sudden drop in Rankings?
Hi there, Our website www.porcelainsuperstore.co.uk has been ranking on pages 1 and 2 of Google for the past 12 - 18 months for a number of our key search terms. There has been the odd fluctuation but nothing major. On Wednesday of this week (2 days ago), we purchased the domain www.porcelainsuperstore.com and without thinking I enabled Domain Forwarding on this domain to go to www.porcelainsuperstore.co.uk

Today our rankings have shown quite dramatic drops, e.g Wood effect tiles position 1 to position 3 Metro tiles position 9 to position 12 Quartz tiles position 4 to position 9 Floor tiles position 14 to position 25 Can anyone advise on this? Do you think the domain forward could have created this sudden drop?
I have now disabled the domain forwarding but am worried that this might be irreversible in Googles eyes? I have now disabled the domain forward - I assume this is the right thing to do?

Whats the best method to tackle website traffic drop?
ON 14th November following a DNS error (which seems to have been a google error as local servers were not effected and it happened to many people everywhere) my traffic started dropping. Within 5 days it was down 50%. In a panic to resolve the situation I thought it was because i was on a shared host and moved to VPS which was a disaster. Ive had server errors since. After desperately looking everywhere for news on the DNS error and whether there as algorithm change etc I decided i should have a look at my site @ www.mutantspace.com and see if there were any internal issues. In Google Webmaster forum a helpful moderator suggested that I do 2 things: 1. Deal with the fact that I had keyword stuffed my <alt tags="">. Basically i run an arts blog so have 8 - 10 images per post and was putting the same text in each one i.e [artists name][artform][name of artwork]. I stupidly didnt realise what i had been doing and have since been deleting my alt tags for every image except one per post. However i have 17,000 images so its going to take a while. </alt> 2. She also linked me to https://ahrefs.com/site-explorer/overview/subdomains/http%253A%252F%252Fwww.mutantspace.com%252F and wondered why i had such volatile inbound links. I dont know why. And cant figure it out As far as everything else goes I dont know what I could be doing wrong to deserve penalty - if it is a penalty. I dont back link so all my links are natural (from artists, galleries, art blogs, tumblrs, etc) I dont sell advertising (yet anyway) Having said that ive been told i have too many links on each page (i run a wordpress site and so have categories, etc) so im wondering if i should nofollow my categories? In short im wondering what advice anyone has on doing a systematic shake up of my site. Im currently doing the following: 1. deleting most of the <alt tags="">on my posts. Ive got back as far as 2012 and will keep going til theyre all done.</alt> 2. Redirecting all crawl errors 3. No Following more outbound links and links to social networks 4. Checking all inbound links to see if there is an suspicious domains 5. Sorting out the fact that ive had numerous server errors for the last 2 weeks (would that affect SERPS?) Google Local Algorithm Changes?
I was wondering if you have heard about any Google Local algorithm changes. We have about 200 franchise locations. Some of our locations have dropped significantly over the past few weeks. Locations that were showing up in the 1-3 positions are now no longer showing on the first page. This is for very relevant phrases for our main line of business (which is also in our business name)... ‘Phrase, CITY NAME’. These locations have plenty of positive Google reviews. We would typically rank well for a phrase like that based on our relevance. I did some brainstorming. Do you think any of these could have any impact? Google is all about things looking and feeling natural including link building, etc. We have used Yext which made a lot of changes across the web to fix addresses, etc. Do you think Google may be seeing this as unnatural? Too many changes at to many sites in to short a period of time? Along those same lines, do you think Google may be penalizing some of our franchise pages for being to ‘perfect’? It would be ‘natural’ for addresses to have some difference across the web and a bit unnatural to have them all match so perfectly. I know that Google has always stated the business name should be listed in Google Local the way it is listed to the general public. Things such as “Business Name Boston” should be listed as “Business Name”. Each of our franchise locations is named in house to reflect their geo location..... "Business Name Boston", "Business Name St. Louis". Many of our competitors also use the practice of attaching geo terms as well. Do you think we may be getting hit with a penalty now even though we have listed things on Google with the Geo term for years.... and is how WE refer to each location? Is it possible that by working with Yext, we drew attention to this practice? Should we remove our local listings geo term on Google Local? How about across the web? We are in a business that does not require customers to come to our location. Some of our locations have not suppressed the address in their local listings while others have. Many of our competitors have not. Do you think this could play into it? Some of our locations that are not showing in Local have good organic results. Have you heard anything about Google dropping Local if they show in organic? I know Google has been looking at social media more and more and I believe they will continue to do so. If our local pages have no social presence, could this adversely affect things? (I think this is probably not the case…. but wanted to throw it out there) I have noticed that in some cases where Local has dropped, we have multiple offices in that metro area. Is it possible that this could affect things? Have you heard of any Local algorithm changes? I know they are releasing a new dashboard sporadically, could this be in conjunction with a larger Local algorithm change? Our CMS tool does not allow us to change Title/Meta per page (I know... terrible!!). So every page has the same title and same meta description. (We are changing our CMS system! Can't wait!).
