Removed listings: 404, internal links or redirect?
-
For a classifieds web site with medium/high turnover for the various listings:
How would you deal with pages of removed listings?
a) would you be "honest" and return a 404 since the listing is not available anymore?
b) would you maintain historical data about deleted listings so that you can try and 301 redirect to a relevant search results page?
c) would you keep the page alive (maybe add a noindex meta tag?) and show links to multiple relevant search results pages in an effort to strengthen internal linking?

How often do people repost the same ad after they expire? Or do the ads expire? I'm thinking of Craigslist, where the ads expire after a certain number of days, and people repost the same ad. I would think you wouldn't want four copies of the same ad indexed, and especially for people to come to an expired version of the ad when there is a fresh one. Also, you'd be competing against yourself with multiple copies of the same content.
You'd need to make clear to the user that the ad could still be indexed, and give them a way to totally remove the ad. I agree with the other comment about wanting to strip out any contact information.
I don't know the best answer from a technical perspective (though I'd lean towards a), but wanted to point out some implications of other solutions.

I like Vinnie's response! I would 301 all of the expired pages maybe to their lowest level category? I'm not sure how the taxonomy of your site works but once the post is deleted I'd have it 301 all of the way down to the lowest level of categorization. This will keep the URL as specific and relevant to the user and also keep your category pages indexed

Hi,
I think from both a user and SEO perspective something along the lines of option A and B would be the best.
What if you redirected all inactive listings to a page that shows other listings from that category or related listings? From a user perspective, if they were looking for that specific listing, showing similar or related ones could be beneficial and would lower your bounce rate.
From an SEO perspective, if any of the expired/inactive listings received any sort of links or ranked for anything you would be wasting link juice.
As I type this I am debating myself on another option, so I am going to share that too. What if you still showed the listing (like an archive) but removed any contact information or anything else that could benefit the original poster? This way you would still have the content page up, and wouldn't lose any link juice or pages on your site?
I think I still like the idea of a smart 404 or a redirect to a page with related listings, perhaps with a message at the top saying "listing not found, but here are some related listings".
Good luck deciding what to do,
Vinnie

With 301 Redirects Does Changing URLs Matter?
We are redesigning our website in order to give it a more modern visual look. For the most part all the content will remain the same. Our old site is hosted on .asp so all of our current URLs look something like this: www.example.com/products/food.asp We plan on using 301 redirects in order to update every URL and remove the .asp. Since we are going to be doing 301 redirects for every existing URL anyways, does it matter from an SEO and ranking standpoint, if we also change the content and structure of the URL? For example, would we see a ranking impact if we were to change the above example URL to www.example.com/food? Obviously we want to try to retain as much link juice and ranking factors as possible during this redesign. Another issue we are seeing is with the image file names of our existing website images. We are moving to a new CMS platform (WordPress) that automatically saves images using a folder path similar to this: wp-uploads/2015-08/food. Will that change affect our SEO or ranking at all? When Google crawls an image does it care about the full path? Any insight would be much appreciated! 🙂

Problem with internal links.
Hello,I am trying to do an audit of the internal links of my site at zenplugs.com. I am having great difficulty simply trying to establish how many internal links there are on the home page. Off the top of my head I think there are probably 20-25 but Screaming Frog tells me there are 574, the MozBar is listing zero and Open Site Explorer is telling me my site hasn't been indexed yet. I have tried several web based services but most of them don't work. Can anyone recommend a tool which has given them a number they trust? My second query is that one of the tools told me that there are 4 links on the home page with no anchor text, linking to http://zenplugs.com/#. Is this a problem? Many thanks, in advance. Toby

Use External Links
Hey 🙂 I noticed when analysing my pages that Moz gives the following advice about adding external links to my articles; "On any page specifically targeting a keyword, link externally to at least one (and possibly more than one) relevant, trusted resources as a best practice." As a small business I work pretty damn hard to get visitors to my website, so why on earth would I want to go to all that trouble just to send them away again to a trusted resouce? Secondly, what exactly is a "trusted resource"? Can I simply use search and use the top competitor, for example Moz or Wikipedia and does the anchor need to be an exact match or will a partial suffice. I say this because I already have the top spot for my longtail, so an exact match would be pointless. And lastly, I notice that pretty much all quality sites use external links to open in the same window i.e. not target=_blank, I never thought of it before today, but now that I'm considering using external linking in my articles I guess it's important to know the answer - i.e. Is this a best practice and does this give any seo benefit? Cheers, Lee :)

Footer-links (navigation)
I want to put navigation links in my footer. I watched the (distilled) whiteboard friday video saying it can be a penalty. How are links in the footer different from links in the navigation. Why don't you get "hit" for putting the word "Real Estate Listings" in the navigation menu? It appears on every one of the 30k pages. I don't get why the links in the footer would have a negative effect if the links in the navigation don't. My example is a real estate website. When people are browsing properties (30k), it is convenient that at the end of the page there is a navigation of areas. I could put the navigation on the sidebar but that would be in essence, the same thing. A wordpress site would dynamically include that sidebar on every page.

Double Listing
So what does it take to get a double listing? If someone has already answered this, please just send the link. Obviously lots of anchor text links to both pages. Also, do I link from both pages to each other for google to see the correlation? For example, homepage link to interior page. And interior page link back to homepage using same anchor text that I want to get the double listing for. Thanks in advance!

Nofollowed internal links from the home page
Hi, I'm conducting an on-page review for someone and have noticed something I've not seen before. Some of the major internal links from the home page are marked as no follow. For example: <a <span="">href</a><a <span="">="</a>/customer-services" rel="nofollow">Customer Services This is on the top navigation bar and the content in this and all other sections are marked as no-follow but they should all be crawled. Is this an error or am I missing something? Any ideas guys? Thanks Bush
