How to track competitor who uses another website on the url?
-
Hi everyone,
The thing is pretty simple:
I have a competitor who uses a different format of url, very similar to this:
www.example.com - but he started to use a thing like this: example.mtv.com
The problem is that every analysis that I make tell me something about mtv.com instead of the site I want. The url is redirected.
Sorry about my english, but I think it is very clear. I want to know how to track something like this, because even in competitor analysis I'm getting info about the big site, and not the one I need.
Thank you very much.

The real problem is that when I put the old url of this site with www.example.com.br, the competitor analyses only track links and stuff till the change of the domain, because now, all the urls are like www.example.mtv.com.
I have no idea what I could do track this site anymore, because I don't see any change at all.
I think the tool itself should realise that I just want the "subdomain", even if that is no relation between the sites.

and
Are 2 different domains.
In this case example.mtv "example" is the sub-domain of mtv. This could mean he has switched host, or owns both domains and just moved his example site to his mtv domain. In this case your competitor has given up his domain authority for example.com.
Open Site Explorer can still read sub-domains if your competitor recently switched then the lack of information is probably because he just recently switched. Meaning, the indexing agents haven't had a chance to index his new site. The only other thing I can think to mention is when researching sub-domain url's make sure you leave out the "www".

How to top competitor's article
Hello, For bobweikel.com I'm going to work on getting some natural backlinks by making a better article than http://www.medicinenet.com/weight_loss/article.htm even though they're 30 times more of an authority than me. If you think this is a good idea, how do you recommend I top this thing? I'm just brainstorming

Absolute vs Relative URL Interlinking Observation & Question
So I've read a few articles about this here on SEOMOZ and other sites. I understand the benefit of relative url linking from a developer's point view. I've also read that using either internal linking methods doesn't really have any real SEO benefits or cons that would impact your rankings greatly. (Except with the slight chance of getting traffic and backlinks from a scraper site.) But I'm seeing examples where this may not be true. I did a search for 5 star hotels in Vegas in google. Some of the top results were Hotels.com and Expedia.com Priceline.com was on the second page. I used the search operator link: to Hotels.com, Expedia.com and Priceline.com vegas hotel pages respectively: Hotels.com: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&tbo=d&site=webhp&q=link%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.hotels.com%2Fde1504033-st5%2Ffive-star-hotels-las-vegas-nevada%2F&oq=link%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.hotels.com%2Fde1504033-st5%2Ffive-star-hotels-las-vegas-nevada%2F&gs_l=serp.3...3650.7043.0.7972.8.7.1.0.0.0.90.363.7.7.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.1j2.4kALxt0jpxI Expedia.com: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&tbo=d&site=webhp&q=link%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.expedia.com%2F5Star-Las-Vegas-Hotels.s50-0-d178276.Travel-Guide-Filter-Hotels&oq=link%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.expedia.com%2F5Star-Las-Vegas-Hotels.s50-0-d178276.Travel-Guide-Filter-Hotels&gs_l=serp.3...1681.3746.0.4076.6.6.0.0.0.0.100.348.5j1.6.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.1j2.KxqwbH-YFV0 Priceline: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&tbo=d&site=webhp&q=link%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.priceline.com%2F5-star-hotels-las-vegas-nevada-NV-filter-tk-s5-c291680-hl.hotel-reviews-hotel-guides&oq=link%3Ahttp%3A%2F%2Fwww.priceline.com%2F5-star-hotels-las-vegas-nevada-NV-filter-tk-s5-c291680-hl.hotel-reviews-hotel-guides&gs_l=serp.3...11265.12321.0.12767.5.5.0.0.0.0.0.0..0.0.les%3B..0.0...1c.1.HYtfct4MS7M The results were that priceline had no backlinks internally or externally to their vegas page. Whereas their competitors did, most of which were from their own internal pages. Looking at priceline's linking structure and architecture, they use a relative url structure and sessions ids to link to various pages. Their competitors don't. Wouldn't you argue that this may be adversely affecting their rankings. I know other things are to be factored in if you dig deeper. But that seems to be a major difference. It just seems that their content management system or how their site is coded isn't really passing link juice.

Date in the URL
Hi, I checked plenty of newspaper websites (example: http://www.guardian.co.uk/, http://www.nytimes.com/, http://www.lemonde.fr/) and all of them include the date in the url. (ie: http://www.nytimes.com/**2011/11/08/**business/global/italy-bonds-push-higher.html). What's the point? Google said that this has no importance and those folders are not even real, you can't get all the articles from the NYT in november 2011 if you remove the rest of the URL. If you use Schema.org properly and the google news sitemap is there still any use for this tactic?

What % is a GO when using the Keyword difficulty tool?
Hi, A lot of keywords I have looked into say 'moderately competitive' at around 35% - 45%. But what else would you look at in the table to decide whether or not the keyword term is achievable and how do you decide this maybe its the root domain backlinks and maybe you would only touch it if it had less then 30. Basically what other elements do you look at when deciding whether to pursue? This might also include some research in Google itself (although most the data you would want is in the tool, well I think anyway! Cheers
