Why Does OSE (Open Site Explorer) have such little backlink data on russian sites in the google.ru index?
-
OK this seems v strange, but google.ru are indexing far more BLs in their SERPS for a widget than OSE reports. Very little data is found in OSE for russian based sites.
Is this the marketing intention?
(I could send raw data if needed!)
What is filtering this vast google.ru data list out? Is OSE only catered for US/UK?

I don't know the exact composition of seed sites that SEOmoz uses, but it's believed to be similar, at least in theory to a process that search engines use.
This would include seed sites such as universities and government agencies and other highly respected sites, for example the Red Cross would be considered a high trust site that would make a good seed.
The set is updated frequently as sites can be gamed. But I wouldn't go as far to say that all newspapers and media sites go in the "bad" category. Some do, some don't.
It's funny that you mention a "cynical" algorithm. It's believe Google does use something similar to a "SpamRank" algorythm.

Thanks for your response (last May - a while back I know)
I re-read your answer and it got me thinking - does OSE only find trusted seed set sites in the eyes of Google? Or does it consider beginning its 'trust' quest journey by what other engines consider, or humans even??
If google turned on a 'cynical' algorithm - surely it would consider most of the newspaper and media links as 'gamed' - turn these off - reverse the polarities and go to find the far remote honest and unbias independent citations from deeper parts of the web. How does one judge what a seed site should be in each country? Is this a manual choice?
-
Hi Turkey,
Good observation. It's certainly not an intentional bias. OSE is designed as a world-wide link index. That said, there are a couple of forces at play here.
First, because of the vast amount of links on the web,the OSE index is designed to find the most significant links. These are the links most likely to influence rankings. With this in mind, OSE usually only contains 40-60% of the links recorded by Google Webmaster Tools. This is true in all regions, including Europe and the United States.
The good news is that the majority of the time, the missing links are very often the same ones that pass little or no value.
It is possible certain "pockets" of the web get less bandwidth from Linkscape crawlers than other areas, due to natural selection. Linkscape starts with a "seed" of trusted sites, which include the top sites from the last index, and then crawls "out" from there. This method means sites well linked to from the "seed" sites and other top-ranked sites have a higher likelyhood of being crawled each index. If Linkscape doesn't have good metrics for a particular site, it is most likely distanced from the seeds.
Every so often the seed sites are adjusted, and there is a natural selection, in order to keep the index fresh and relative. It's one of the best indexes of its kind in the world, but of course there is always room for improvement.
Hope this explination helps. Thanks again for the feedback.

Google Analytics Tracking Miscount - Originating Around 5/24
Is anyone else experiencing an issue where it seems GA failed to track many of their visitors? This is why I think it's something on GA's end and not mine (and not natural): 1. No changes were made, site wasn't down, tracking code is correct and is "receiving data" 2. Referral, Direct and Organic traffic all dropped at about the same decline over the same period *3. Pinterest Analytics shows me being sent over 10 times more traffic every day than GA shows me actually receiving. In the screenshot, Pinterest shows 584 uniques while GA shows 43 for Sunday. I figure if something was broken, I wouldn't be showing ANY traffic and if it was natural, it wouldn't have happened on the same decline across all traffic mediums and Pinterest Analytics wouldn't be so far off. I saw a few people mentioning similar things on Google's forums and wanted to ask you guys if anyone noticed any issues? y8XAvwz.png pRsRAmK.png

Is this still Google?
My niche, my concern.

http://www.google.com/search?q=jimbaran+villa
My site just dropped out of the rankings completely. But if you look at the Google search above you will notice 2 things:
1. First page: 75% of space above the fold is dedicated to Google making money
2. Subsequent pages: It is like you don't actually search "Google" If you flip through a few pages what you actually search is:
agoda.com
flipkey.com
tripadvisor.com
homeaway.com Do I have a point or am I simply having a cynical day?1 -
Google's Current Wave of Updates (4/24 edition)
Edit: Someone beat me to the punch, here is the thread: http://www.seomoz.org/q/google-webspam-algo-update-24-4-12 Let's just discuss it there. So Google has said they are doing another wave of algorithm updates that could impact anywhere from 3-5% of SERPs. I saw it here: http://searchengineland.com/google-launches-update-targeting-webspam-in-search-results-119295 http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2012/04/another-step-to-reward-high-quality.html Has anyone seen any changes? I've heard from a few friends that their sites are bouncing all over the place, which seems to happy a lot during these updates. We might not actually know the fallout for a few days/weeks/months. I saw a few of my smaller sites take a hit, but most of mine have stayed the same. Anyway what do you guys think? Sometimes an update like this can be a wake-up call to people who think they are doing white hat stuff but may be pushing the envelope a bit too much. Thoughts?

Alexa Site Audit
Hello All, I run an Alexa Site Audit report for my client. Is it normal that my Alexa site audit report will be public i.e. S3 URL for downloading the PDF file was open to anyone knowing the URL. No re-direct to login etc was there? Yes the S3 URL is funny but Google bots have ways to find this funny URLs so is this normal? If you have tried Alexa can you repeat the problem i.e. typing your S3 report URL? can you get it to? or is it just me. I have asked Alexa about it. I think there should be some security. Thanks.

How do you value a site that generates no income before it's sold?
Hi, I'm currently creating a number of sites which target the wedding market. Each site is localized and specific to a niche within the wedding market. The intention is to create the site, rank it in the top position of Google and then sell it to a local business within that niche and area. The problem that i am having is that I don't know how to place a value on each site. I have factors taken from Google (using Market Samurai) so I know the broad and phrase match traffic details as well as the Google PPC average prices. My initial thought was to use the Google PPC price and multiply that by the number of organic visitors the site would receive if it was ranked #1 on Google. I appreciate that the PPC figures may be higher than what an advertiser would actually pay per click so I conservatively halved the Google PPC figure given in Market Samurai. Is this a good way of valuing the site or do I need to look at the value per customer to the business that I am trying to sell the site to and work from a conversion factor based on the number of visitors that the site would receive. If the site received 500 visitors per month and 5% of those became customers multiplied by the average profit per customer - that would give a monthly value of the website. I am very unsure as to what the best approach is here and look forward to hearing any advice and ideas from fellow members. Thanks, Michael
