Content on Wordpress blog inside the main website for SEO
-
Hi,
We have our main website and our blog on blog.practo.com. Now what I see is that we wish to write in content to grow our seo keywords and links.
Should we put the blog as www.practo.com/blog and then begin writing all the content or we should put the wordpress blog as www.practo.com/(wordpress blog here) and then begin writing the content.
For best practices I suppose we should have content lined up as www.sitename.com/category/article name etc or www.sitename.com/article name etc - am I correct?
Our main site consists of few html pages and then we have our software on a different sub domain.
What are the best ways to publish content and get it crawled at a faster rate for growth?
I would also wish to understand how to measure the number of growth in % to our content we are writing. Only via google analytics or some other tool?
Say I wish to see the growth of 10 articles from month of may and compare it to the month of april or march 2012. So what tools could I use to see if we are progressing or not?
Thanks

Hi there,
We always recommend our clients place their blog on a sub-folder, rather than sub-domain - so practo.com/blog rather than blog.practo.com. This way any links gained to your blog posts pass more power to your domain.
In terms of the URL it's up to you whether or not to include the category, but we generally don't on ours and client blogs. Practo.com/blog/article-name would be a good way to go (assuming you're talking about blog posts). If you're using Wordpress, change your permalink structure to %postname% and that will do it for you. To do that write a new post and hit 'edit' next to the URL under the title in Wordpress, then select 'custom permalinks' and enter it in there. I'd also recommend installing the Yoast Wordpress SEO plugin, which will really help you nail down the SEO elements of your blog posts and attack long-tail keyphrases.
For tracking and comparing month on month / year on year Google Analytics is excellent (and free).
For getting your content indexed, make sure you have a sitemap (a segmented XML sitemap will work well) and submit to GWT. Try and build some links to your content - or better yet, produce good content and promote it via social media and the links will come naturally, which will help with indexation. You could also consider submitting your site to Google News if the content is good enough and your site meets their requirements.
Hope that helps! : )

Dramatic drop in SEO rankings after recovering from hacking
A few months ago my client's website was hacked which created over 20,000+ spammy links on the site. I dealt with removing the malware and got google to remove the malware warning shortly within a week of the hacking. Then started the long process to do 301 redirects and disavowing links under Webmaster tools over these few months. The hacking only caused a slight drop in rankings at the time. Now just as of last week the site had a dramatic drop in rankings. When doing a keyword search I noticed the homepage doesn't even get listed on Google Maps and for Google Search instead the inner pages like the Contact Us page show up instead of the homepage. Does anyone have any insight to the sudden drop happening now and why the inner pages are ranking higher than the homepage now?

How much content is it safe to change?
I have read that it is unsafe to change more than 20% of your site’s content in any update. The rationale is that "Changing too much at once can flag your site within the Google algorithm as having something suspicious going on." Is this true, has anyone had any direct experiences of this or similar?

Has anyone else noticed a major increase in Yelp, BBB, etc. results in local SERPs, pushing business websites further down?
Across multiple cities and markets, this seems to be a trend. "Chicago coffee shop" or "Minneapolis hair salon" or "Sacramento car repair" - outside the local 7-pack, virtually every result is Yelp, BBB, Yellowpages, etc. Is this related to algo changes, or simply a result of those national sites pumping major resources into SEO? It just seems to be suddenly far more prevalent than it was even 6 months ago.

What was the biggest challenge you faced as an SEO in 2012?
As an SEO (in-house, freelance, consultant, agency, entrepreneur) what was the biggest challenge you faced in 2012? Please be as specific as you can, and let us all know what you are doing to overcome this challenge in 2013. For me personally I would have to say the biggest challenge I had to deal with was Google+ Local. Obviously Google is putting a lot into G+L, but it has been so messy and at times I have just thrown my arms up in the air. Especially when it comes to multi-state locations and losing reviews.

As a note I am a Realtor with a Real Estate website.

I have submitted sitemap to bing's webmaster tool two weeks ago and still it is in Pending stage. here is our address: www.showme.com and here is site map: http://www.showme.com/sitemapxml.php What can be the reason of that? Thanks for your help. Karen Bdoyan
