What's the best way to sculpt links on a page?

I know PR isn't a top ranking factor anymore, so "PR sculpting" isn't something to focus on. But isn't it still true that having more links that you need on any given page is worse than having fewer, in terms of that page's authority?
I'm managing a site that has a lot of navigational links in the footer, which are duplicative because they're almost all included in the top nav bar, and several are triplicated in the sidebar as well. I wanted to remove 85% of these duplicative links from the footer, thinking they diluted the page authority and that most users probably won't scroll there anyway when we launch the site.
The site owner is pushing back, though, not wanting to remove so many links because he believes they might be useful to some users. We can test our respective user-behavior theories after launching, but right now I have two questions:
- Will having a sizable number of duplicative links in the footer dilute the page's authority?
and 2) Are there any other ways to reduce this dilution, aside from simply removing the links? (I know nofollow is not the answer, but possibly using iframes or Java or something like that?)

I wouldn't worry about dilution. They may look spammy if the anchor text is highly optimized and they are really only there for SEO purposes. Or if there are a ton.

Don't worry about dilution/sculpting. Put links on your site for usability. Use descriptive anchors. Make the site easy to use and navigate.
That being said, I agree with you that removing them is probably a good idea. If they are all present in the top nav, I see no reason to duplicate it all again in the footer. Instead, use the footer to highlight some other important pages on your site that are important but not header worthy. Help, About, FAQ, Popular Pages and others.

Are slides how's etc the new Splash Pages?
[How did Moz know that my question was about this?!] I've just completed an audit of nearly 50 websites in the tourism industry and 90% had a slideshow, large image or video taking up more than the initial screen on the fairly large screened Chromebook that I'm using. I'm advising them all to ditch this and am often getting resistance from the site owners and their web developers. I know that these can be better optimized for page load speed, which is poor for most of these sites, especially on mobile devices; but from a usability standpoint, are these affective at drawing in users? Do users take the time to view these? Are they annoyed at always having to scroll down to see if there is anything else useful on the homepage? I think they are like the splash pages of the past: poor for usability and SEO. I've advised to at least make sure that the images are sized so the top of the page fits any screen (some of them do resize well for mobile devices, but maybe not laptops/desktops), include text with calls to action and click through to relevant content. I've been noting that they aren't media businesses selling images or videos, so they need to get their offerings to the top of the page so that users can see and engage more quickly. Heres a puzzle for you... Htags on left hand nav for ecomm category pages
Hi Guys, So I am back asking more questions, but I am slowly learning 🙂 This next one, I have looked everywhere and I can't get my head around h tags on ecomm sites. I have looked at competitors and non competitors and still am not sure which is the right or wrong thing to do, specifically in this instance, category pages. Our I.T. dept is somewhat under resourced and I don't want to waste their time with test and trial on this particular issue. Category landing pages... There are shed loads of category listing pages on our site, at the moment the h1 tag for each sub-category is listed in the end path of the breadcrumb, there is no other spaces on the page accept the left hand navigation. Which is the better to use, breadcrumb or nav? We would have to totally recode our left hand nav which is pretty set up for the whole site. The reason I ask this question to you is because an SEO agency recommended that we... Add the H1 to the left hand navigation and make it customisable so that it is not the same as the breadcrumb keywords. I have attached an image of a competitor of ours that so the same thing currently, to show what I mean... Right now I am not sure what to tell the agency and what the right thing to do is. I read a post saying that we are actually doing the right thing under the circumstances. Does anyone have a best practise good example of generally what we should do for category pages? A/B Testing.. Are you doing? how is it been? What do you think would be the best path for who is starting now?
Hey Mozers, One of my 2014 resolutions is to start doing A/B Testing, so far I have been following "best practices" and "common sense" when comes to website design, but I would like to go above and beyond. I was hoping a could get a few tips some of you that are already doing A/B testing. How is it been? Do you see a great ROI? What do you think would be best path for who is starting now? Pointless copy on product list pages makes me feel compromised...
When working on ecommerce websites we insist that product list pages need at least 250 words of copy that is optimised for our keyword phrase ... lets say "17 inch bike frames". So we have some crappy copy written that goes something like this.... "We have a great 17 inch bike frame for you whatever your requirement. Take a look at the frames below .... blah blah blah totally pointless text blah blah blah........." This text is of no use to the user as the page is merely a means of them getting to a suitable product page. However, the copy is pretty essential if we want to rank well for "17 inch bike frames" and not having copy on product list pages could land us in hot water with Panda ...especially if we have lots of them on a site using the same page template and with no copy on them. Does anyone else feel uneasy with adding this crappy text to pages? It's only there for search engines and that is something that Google say's we shouldn't do but I know for sure they're not going to rank me as well if I don't have it. I'd be interested to hear other people's opinion on this. It's always annoyed me. Does anyone have any good tips for making this type of copy on product list pages less forced and crappy?

'Increase in soft 404 errors' Webmasters notification. What to do?
I've received a Webmasters notification about an 'increase in soft 404 errors'. When we had the new site launched three months ago we did away with some old pages, which we either 301 to new equivalents, or, we return a 'Oops, that page seems to be missing' 404 page which has some links to important parts on the site that might be of use to the visitor. Any ideas why Webmasters is issuing the warning? Any suggestions as to what to do? Thanks

Does listing my customer's address, phone number, and a contact form on "every page" count as duplicate content that they'd be penalized for?
I work with small local businesses (like Tree Farms, Feed Stores, Counselors, etc) doing web design, seo, etc. I encourage them to have their contact information visible at all times on their websites. I'm also delving into the world of contact forms. I want to have this info on every page - is this detrimental?
