Keyword research - how to find additional competitors and links
-
Hello,
We need 100 strong linking root domains to rank at all in our industry (probably more). But all our competitors are using internal pages.
I only found one competitor that is using their home page, and I found 12 good backlink possibilities through it.
How do I go about finding other competitors? I know this is a general question, but what strategies do you guys use, and could you give examples?
-
yeah i prob should have read the title......................... Can I ask what industry cause in the lawyer sector There is 100+ article/blog sites 100+ LOCAL directory sites 100+ Other Related Sites
a good place to get some backlinks is patch they use sub domains for each town so every area you market to you get a listing (and i think there blogs have follow links)

At the most basic level, your competitors for any given keyword are the sites that rank for that keyword - but if you Google not only your keyword, but also related keywords (not just SEO but SEO services, SEO consulting, etc.) you will start to see a few sites that come up for a variety of semantically related searches. I'd start by mining their backlinks.
There are lots of ways to find link targets beyond mining your competitors' backlinks, though. Try searching "(your keyword) blog" to find relevant blogs on your topic/in your industry. Use a service like FriendOrFollow to look at your competitors' followers and the people they follow on Twitter - some of them will have useful sites as well. Once you find a site that you'd like to target for a link, look at that site's backlinks to find more related sites to target.
Don't forget that you can use the "pages on this root domain" option in Open Site Explorer and pull out all of the links to a domain, whether to the home page or internal pages.

Oh I see. You misinterpreted my question
We need 100 strong backlinks for our site to rank at all in our industry (probably more). But all our competitors are using internal pages so they don't have much to sort through in OSE.

search "asbestos attorney" A very competitive term that I have not yet tried to target (over $100per click in adwords)
The First 3 are big sites (aka:sokolove) than it goes to domain targeted sites. Sokolove Targets some 300 or more keywords and his domain alone helps outrank most of his comp
as well a not so comp keyword "pradaxa lawyer" that we just started targeting by just creating a page without much seo gets #5 rank
I can see creating a domain for 1 keyword in an area a seoing it crazy and getting it in the top 3 but doing that 100 times seems like years of work... if you could get it to rank in a month

So even if there's hundreds of people building one big page authority in my industry, I could target my internal pages towards niches that are smaller or different than my competitors and do well?
That seems to be what everyone else is doing in our competitive niche. Is there a way to do this when it's pretty competitive?
-
why wouldn't you be using internal pages as well only have to build 1 page authority unless you have 100 people that can each work with an individual domain and get it authoritative
I just google search the term I want to rank for than see who comes up than through them into places like ose and see what they are doing & if I can beat them

Link Juice
Do you guys think having a guest post close to the root domain has more link juice that being in subfolders? example.com/123 vs example.com/nov/123 Both pages have the same amount of internal links and both pages don't have external links

Will link juice still be passed if you have the same links in multiple, outreach articles?
We are developing high quality, unique content and sending them out to bloggers to for guest posts. In these articles we have links to 2 to 3 sites. While the links are completely relevant, each article points to the same 2 to 3 sites. The link text varies slightly from article to article, but the linked-to site/URLs remain the same. We have read that it is best to have 2 to 3 external links, not all pointing to the same site. We have followed this rule, but the 2 to 3 external sites are the same sites on the other articles. I'm having a hard time explaining this, so I hope this makes sense. My concern is, will Google see this as a pattern and link juice won't be passed to the linked-to URLs, or worst penalize all/some of the sites being linked to or linked from? Someone I spoke to had suggest that my "link scheme" describes a "link wheel" and the site(s) will be penalized by Penguin. Is there any truth to this statement?

Should I buy a keyword rich domain to prevent competitors from buying it
Some people in the company I work for have suggested that we buy a keyword rich domain that matches a new product line that we're planning to release. I've advised that this in itself is not a good idea, as we'll need to produce high quality content for that site rather than just having it exist for ranking purposes. We already have a section on our main site focussed on this product line, so I don't think having the keyword match domain would really add anything unless we worked out what we'd use this site for. That said, I was wondering whether it might be worth buying the exact match domain anyway, in order to prevent a competitor from using it?

Why is this competitor ranking so high?
I have a competitor who consistently rans #1 or close in SERPS for keyword phrase "uncontested divorce lawyerser. in analyzing his site he doesn't seem to have anywhere near the links, domain authority or page authority that would justify this preeminence Is this a black hat situation or what? His site is www.uncontesteddivorceny.comhx thx Paul

Keyword Spy Source?
We've got a few backlinks from Keyword Spy and Keyword Spy Pro. I'm pretty sure of the answer but I'll ask it anyway. Is there any way to determine who's doing the snooping? Are there any signals to look for while clicking back through the link "crumbs" that might tell me something of interest or value?

Create a link or redirect?
We have 60 demo movie pages on our site. We no longer link to these movie pages internally, because they are outdated; however, a lot of our partner companies are still linking to these pages. Some of these pages will have 10-15 linking root domains and a page authority of 30+... so pretty decent authority. These pages only include a movie on the pages, no links. I am trying to pass some of the link juice from these pages to other pages on our site. I am wondering if I should: A)Include transcripts on these pages, then link back to our current product page or solution pages? B)Set up redirects from these pages to a product or solution page? C)Set up a redirect to our homepage? Any advice? Thanks, Mike

% of the time you find email addresses - broken link building
Hello, What percentage of the time do you find an exact email address of the person to contact when doing broken link building? And what do you do if you can't find an email address? Always interested in more tools if I need them, my last post here brought out several good tools. Thank you.

Link anchor text: only useful for pages linked to directly or distributed across site?
As a SEO I understand that link anchor text for the focus keyword on the page linked to is very important, but I have a question which I can not find the answer to in any books or blogs, namely: does inbound anchor text 'carry over' to other pages in your site, like linkjuice? For instance, if I have a homepage focusing on keyword X and a subpage (with internal links to it) focusing on keyword Y. Does is then help to link to the homepage with keyword Y anchor texts? Will this keyword thematically 'flow through' the internal link structure and help the subpage's ranking? In a broader sense: will a diverse link anchor text profile to your homepage help all other pages in your domain rank thematically? Or is link anchor text just useful for the direct page that is linked to? All views and experiences are welcome! Kind regards, Joost van Vught
