Solving duplicate content errors for what is effectively the same page.
-
Hello,
I am trying out your SEOMOZ and I quite like it. I've managed to remove most of the errors on my site however I'm not sure how to get round this last one.If you look at my errors you will see most of them revolve around things like this:
http://www.containerpadlocks.co.uk/categories/32/dead-locks
http://www.containerpadlocks.co.uk/categories/32/dead-locks?PageSize=9999These are essentially the same pages because the category for Dead Locks does not contain enough products to view over more than one resulting in the fact that when I say 'View all products' on my webpage, the results are the same. This functionality works with categories with more than the 20 per page limit.
My question is, should I be either:
Removing the link to 'show all products' (which adds the PageSize query string value) if no more products will be shown. Or putting a no-index meta tag on the page? Or some other action entirely?
Looking forward to your reply and you showing how effective Pro is.
Many Thanks,

Hi James,
Did Saibose answer your questions, or do you still have some questions remaining? I hope you're still enjoying your Pro membership, and let us know if we can help with anything!

James, I think that you can afford to do some apache level mod_rewrite so that you can mask your URLs with better looking keyword optimized URLs. mod_rewrite on apache is something your LAMP (linux, Apache MYsql,PHP) programmer would be aware of.
Programs and ecommerce cart programmers normally use easy to code names, but at the end it takes a lot of pain to rename all the categories and product names to something meaningful.
I had a similar problem and I got a mod rewrite done since htaccess modifications for 301 redirections and URL masking would put stress on the server and can slow your page load time.

Thanks for your reply.
I see - I shall remove the 'Show All Products' link for categories with less than the page size of products.
What could I change the URL too? At the moment I am using /category/id/ as I need to indicate whether the ID is for a Category (in which case show the category page) or a Product (show the product page). At the moment I am using /category/ and /products/ Is there a better format to use bearing in mind I have to have data in the URL describing if the URL is for a category or product.

James,
The easiest way is to get rid of the 9999 at the last of the URL. If you can, add a rel=canonical tag for all such pages. That should normally work.
If the problem is rampant, you may want to remove the "show all products" option from pages that do not have more products to showcase. I would also suggest using a mod rewrite on apache to write better URLs for the same. Category33 sounds a bit weird to me. It could be named more SEO friendly.
If you want to get more information on rel=canonical implementation here is a link to help.

Duplicate Content even when Canonical is used
Hi Everyone, Our website uses the Magento platform which is notorious for creating duplicate content. I tried to make sure that all the duplicate content it creates should be "canonicalized" to the correct page. While looking through the moz Page Diagnostics I see that I have 1003(!) pages of duplicate content. When I downloaded the csv I saw that over 95% of them had a canonical url. Does that mean there is really no issue but moz analytics is still reading it as duplicate content and titles? Is there an issue with them being canonicals as opposed to being redirected? Thanks!

I did a redirect and now I'm getting duplication errors.
I was told by SEO Moz to do a redirect so that our website would be crawled with and without the www in front of the address. I did and now I'm getting duplicate page and title errors because the crawler is seeing www.oursitename.com and its underpages and oursitename.com and its underpages and giving me duplicate page content errors and duplicate page title errors. Makes sense, but how do I make it stop? Anyone else have this problem?

Campaign report errors
one of the heavily noted errors for the first crawl of our domain was duplicate titles. I did not see a list of the pages and their current titles, but i am pretty sure it is somewhere to be found. That would help focus the work to do. Am I wrong about that?

On page links tool here at Seomoz
Hi Seomoz - first of all, thanks for the best SEO tools I have ever worked with (this is my first question in this forum, and also I just subscribed as a paying customer after the 30 days trial you guys offer). My question: After having worked for several weeks on getting the numbers of links in our forum on www.texaspoker.dk down, we are somewhat surprised to see that we didn't succeed in getting lower numbers. For instance, this page: http://www.texaspoker.dk/forum/aktuelle-konkurrencer/coaching-projekt-bliver-du-den-udvalgte has (that's what Seomoz seo tool tells us): 239 on page links. Can this really be true? We can't find these links, and we actuually did a lot to lower the numbers of links, for instance the forum members picture was a link before, and also there was a "go to top" link in each post in the forum. Thanks a lot.

I see an abundance of websites that don't link out at all, and there is no data available to seoMoz for the sites, some like http:// regal - diving dot com (trying not to get moderated AGAIN Innocent need to show which link and its a competitor kind of) are not linking to anyone else just internal links. How come they dont show info to SEOMOZ Should I link out from home page, is this detrimental does ANY single link from home page show google that I am not a PROPER web business. thanks

What the . . ! Duplicate Pages and Titles WAY up?
My duplicate pages went up 50 plus in the past week, and my duplicate page titles went over more then 100. We recently redesigned the website, but it has been up for several weeks now. The only change I made specifically last week or late the week before was to get my 301 redirects done to get the www. version and the non www version pointing to the same place (as well as a couple other sites that point to it). I'm sure this is not enough info to figure out what went wrong . . . I'd love some help in figuring this out though.
