Diagnosing a Penguin Demotion
-
Whilst ive noyt hit the panic button just yet ive learnt that a specific target term I was optimising a site flor has dropped off the Google radar from forth to zero
The site is www.davidclick.com the target term was "York wedding photographer" and the demotion happened at the end of March this year, below illustrates the carnage..
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc53/zymurgy_bucket/target-term-demotioncopy.jpg
When i first learnt about this I began to wonder if I was a victim of the Penguin update. I suspected i might so I ran a test to see how many inbound links used the target term York wedding photographer and here is what i found... Only one site http://www.singingwaitersx2.com/links/ and at a push this site also http://york-wedding-photographer.blogspot.co.uk/
So my question is have i fallen foul to the penguin update? If yes then is the only remedy to block the aforementioned site links via this technique:
http://www.htaccess-guide.com/deny-visitors-by-referrer/
Thanks in advance,
David

EDIT 2: You never know, the site might bounce back once that blogspot domain change (from .com to .co.uk) completes properly in the SERPs.
In the meantime, I would still fix the other problems I mentioned in my first post (the on page stuff, the 302s, etc), and perhaps change some of the backlinks you are getting from the blogspot blog to non-exact match anchor text. You could also consider getting rid of some of the links in those blog posts completely to make the blog less spammy overall, as the content therein doesn't actually seem that bad.
Meanwhile, try approaching wedding blogs/sites (local sites and general UK authority sites too), to see if you can write a guest post or two on for them. You could offer to write about anything, from the obvious (How to choose a Wedding Photographer), to the more interesting/unique (Top 5 things you should never say to a Wedding Photographer). It's sometimes good to break the ice by helping the webmaster or blog owner out, e.g. if you can find a broken link on their site, or a spelling error, email them about that first to get the conversation going. As well as finding wedding sites, you could post for some general local blogs/sites - perhaps an article about wedding venues in York could work on a general local interest website.
When it comes to the davidclick.com site, I'd add a blog to that, and start trying to create some great content that will really attract links from other sites within the wedding sphere. Whilst you want to be giving your guest blogs some good content, you definitely need to save the best for your own blog. There are loads of great articles, videos and webinars to spark ideas for content here at SEOmoz!

Not for me.
EDIT: Ah, I see.. the .com blogspot URL is indexed.. but the blog has moved to a .co.uk - Do you happen to know when this occurred?
-
Thanks Riplash But curious about the following "The blog that you mentioned, http://york-wedding-photographer.blogspot.co.uk/ is not indexed by Google"
Ermm... when i google "Dark side of wedding photography" or put the url directly in the serach box it does appear in the SERPS. Does this not mena it is indexed?

Based on the date your site dropped down the rankings, it was not a Penguin related change. Penguin did not roll out until 24th April 2012. I've had a very brief look at the SEO for this site, I can see a few issues - this is not by any means an exhaustive or definitve list, but is probably a good place to start
-
You have canonicalisation issues - i.e. I can visit the site by going to www.davidclick.com and davidclick.com. Make sure you fix this with a 301 redirect.
-
You have 302 (temporary) redirects from wedding-york-photographer.co.uk (a URL linked to from the blog mentioned below, incidentally), and also www.davidclick.com - you prob want to make those 301 (permenant) redirects
-
The blog that you mentioned, http://york-wedding-photographer.blogspot.co.uk/ is not indexed by Google, having most likely been deindexed due to Panda. This will be because it's clearly there to affect ranking and not much else - evidenced by the fact that every post links back to the same website. I'd bin it completely if I were you as it's not doing you any favours SERP wise, and could be evidence of over optimisation leading you to fall foul of Penguin further down the line.
-
As a result of the blog above being de-indexed, the site basically has very few backlinks, and none with the anchor text matching the keywords you are targetting. Therefore there is no real reason that it should be ranking for those keywords.
-
A quick glance at the on-page for the site shows multiple repetitions of the keyword (title tag, h1, h2, body text) which isn't necessarily the cause of the ranking drop (as I said, Penguin came later) - but potentially looks like over optimisation. I would clean up the site - target the text at human visitors, not SEO.
Hope this helps a bit. I'd certainly start with the basics, and get those right, then build some relationships and get some good quality links in.

Sitelink demotion
I have applied a sitelink demotion in webmaster tools, though this same sitelink is still appearing under my Google listing. How long does it usually take to take effect? Or is there anything I can do about this? Also, is there a way in which I can select or channel Google to show the sitelinks I want?

Penguin 2.1 update, ranking dropped.
Hi, My website was hit by Google's new update like never before, first my ranking dropped back in May when Google rolled out with their second Penguin update, back then i was outsourcing my SEO since most of the time i was working on optimizing my local maps. As soon as noticed my traffic dropped i start doing SEO my self, I removed over optimized keywords on website ( title, meta description) then i analyzed my link profile and found that i had a lot of commercial anchor text linking from spammy websites, mostly blog comments. Its been over 4 months since I used Google's disavow tools in hoping that will help me get my raking back, but i still see these spammy links in my profile, 90% of them are nofollow anyways , so i'm not sure if disavow tool helped me at all. With this Penguin 2.1 update my website ended up on page 4-10 for 90% of my keywords http://screencast.com/t/3bcw8LUxpj Im not sure what would be the best way out this, should i buy a new domain and start fresh? Please let me know if you want to take a look on my link profile and give your opinion. Looking forward to your help!

Page Indexing increase when I request Google Site Link demote
Hi there, Has anyone seen a page crawling increase in Google Web Master Tools when they have requested a site link demotion? I did this around the 23rd of March, the next day I started to see page crawling rise and rise and report a very visible spike in activity and to this day is still relatively high. From memory I have asked about this in SEOMOZ Q&A a couple of years ago in and was told that page crawl activity is a good thing - ok fine, no argument. However at the nearly in the same period I have noticed that my primary keyword rank for my home page has dropped away to something in the region of 4th page on Google US and since March has stayed there. However the exact same query in Google UK (Using SEOMOZ Rank Checker for this) has remained the same position (around 11th) - it has barely moved. I decided to request an undemote on GWT for this page link and the page crawl started to drop but not to the level before March 23rd. However the rank situation for this keyword term has not changed, the content on our website has not changed but something has come adrift with our US ranks. Using Open Site Explorer not one competitor listed has a higher domain authority than our site, page authority, domain links you name it but they sit there in first page. Sorry the above is a little bit of frustration, this question is not impulsive I have sat for weeks analyzing causes and effects but cannot see why this disparity is happening between the 2 country ranks when it has never happened for this length of time before. Ironically we are still number one in the United States for a keyword phrase which I moved away from over a month ago and do not refer to this phrase at all on our index page!! Bizarre. Granted, site link demotion may have no correlation to the KW ranking impact but looking at activities carried out on the site and timing of the page crawling. This is the only sizable factor I can identify that could be the cause. Oh! and the SEOMOZ 'On-Page Optimization Tool' reports that the home page gets an 'A' for this KW term. I have however this week commented out the canonical tag for the moment in the index page header to see if this has any effect. Why? Because as this was another (if not minor) change I employed to get the site to an 'A' credit with the tool. Any ideas, help appreciated as to what could be causing the rank differences. One final note the North American ranks initially were high, circa 11-12th but then consequently dropped away to 4th page but not the UK rankings, they witnessed no impact. Sorry one final thing, the rank in the US is my statistical outlier, using Google Analytics I have an average rank position of about 3 across all countries where our company appears for this term. Include the US and it pushes the average to 8/9th. Thanks David

How do I diagnose a site that has had a corrupted database restored?
Here's the situation: Downloaded a backup of a full database from CPanel, because we needed to perform some queries on it. Found out that after restoring it, CPanel had not been able to zip up the full database because the server memory was set so low (some posts weren't showing up after the restore). SO, how would I go about determining exactly what content is missing from the site? What search engine queries would you perform? Is there a plugin I could use to establish the inconsistencies between the database content and the search results? Your help is appreciated in advance!

General Penguin Discussion
I think that all the threads regarding the Penguin update (including this) need to be merged into 1 thread as it seems the majority of new conversations are all about the same thing whenever I log on in the morning.

Slapped by the Penguin
We had a client's website hit hard by the Penguin update, particularly on the 24th. Sitewide each keyword lost 10-20 positions. It was in #1 or #2 for the past couple years. We optimize all of our websites onpage features well and within the whitehat realm. Since this was the only website affected out of 50+ other sites, I am guessing the penalty came directly from the backlink profile which was quite bad. The client had bought two other directory link package deals about 4 years ago which all of the incoming directory links have the exact same anchor text. I warned him this was completely unnatural and we only went after "natural-looking" links since then. Keep in mind these links were from 4+ years ago and did very little for rankings as we came into the picture. Out of 143 root domain links, around 45 use the same anchor text in link. We started with about 50 links total 2 years ago and have since built a very good quality profile, or so I thought. I was almost certain is was enough various anchor text to dilute it down. I'm wondering if any of your websites that have been hit have a high amount of exact match anchor text. I can't believe Google would penalize just for linkbuilding because it seems to be an easy way to attack competitors but all my data is looking that way. Let me know your thoughts if any of your sites have been hit. Thanks

Whats the quickest way of diagnosing a canonical problem
Salut from from positivley tropical 10 degrees C wetherby UK 🙂 Ok here goes... on this site http://www.cedarcourthotels.co.uk/ there is a canonical problem but I'm interested to know if my method of spotting a canonical problem is the most efficient. In the case of Cedar Court I started with http://www.cedarcourthotels.co.uk/ then i entered this https://www.cedarcourthotels.co.uk/ and noted they were pointing to the same home page. My question is there a quicker way of diagnosing a canonical problem or is it a case of knowcking out w's and adding s etc. Thanks in advance, David
