Large recent drop in "Domain Authority" and backlinks through OSE
-
Hello,
I've noticed that our sites domain authority has dropped enormously this past week according to Open Site Explorer. It also shows us as having lost about half of our backlinks.
Google webmaster tools doesn't show a corresponding drop in links and we haven't done anything to our domain recently. Anyone have any ideas what might have happened?
Our site is at: http://www.GoldMaxUSA.com
Thanks!

301 directs coming from
page 15 on Open Site Explorer with Domain Authority of 14.
As far as why the sudden drop in Domain Authority, it is due to Open Site Explorer getting around to indexing all of your backlinks from the internet. I know they hit a bump in the road recently, which stalled indexing the web for a month (or so).
What I can conclude is the backlinks to your site are causing a negative effect with so many low domain authority scores (along with Moz Trust).
One thing I do like about SEOMOZ/OSE is that their algo. method of determining authority is pretty damn close to google's.
So if you see your authority drop on open site explorer it's just as bad in google's eyes or worse.
If you don't mind me asking, what are you link building plans? I highly recommend to not outsource them to agencies..either way. PM me if you would like, private messages can be found under the "my account" and we can discuss strategies if it's something you dont want to discuss on a forum.

Perfect. Thanks Takeshi, I appreciate it.

You're probably seeing the drop because SEOMoz just updated their index:
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/may-mozscape-index-update164-billion-urls
The sites that are indexed are going to change between updates, and as more/different sites get changed, the values for domain authority are going to shift. If you haven't seen a corresponding update in GWT, then don't worry about it, it probably means that nothing has changed for your site, it's OSE that's changed (similar to how toolbar Pagerank is just a snapshot of a site at a certain time).

Thanks Modbargains,
I was just hired to help with SEO (I've only been here a few weeks now) and I'm working on a backlinks strategy now. We definitely, definitely need better links with better anchor text.
My concern however is that we haven't done anything drastic over the past couple of weeks yet we've seen a big drop in domain authority according to OSE. I'm trying to figure out what happened.
Also, what 301 redirects are you referring to?
Thanks!
Jason

Well spending 1 minute of my time i see three issues
1. Too many No follow backlinks
2. Your keywords are primarily "WEBSITE" or "View WEBSITE" on quality sites with "no follow" links
and www.goldmaxusa.com on low quality sites with "follow" links
3. whats with the garbage 301 directs? Come on.
I amlooking at OSE with Domain Authority ranked highest to lowest.
Fix:
Get better back links ( i dont care how) and use variations of keywords you want to rank on.
"WEBSITE" is not one of them
"Gold buyer" is a somewhat ok keyword. you can do better than me
"Highest cash for gold" would be an example of a better phrased keyword variant to use.

To add to this: We have over the past 3 weeks noticed a negative SEO campaign against us. Our press releases are being horribly spun and added to really spammy sites. We've also seen a lot of links being added to strange porn sites.
It seems strange however that we would have seen a drop in backlinks somehow though.

Drop of traffic after massive technical issue
Hello,
Reporting & Analytics | | SharonEKG
since August i am working on a customers website on WordPress who has a costume made theme, back in October after updating some plugins we had a massive breakdown and the website went up and down and had technical issues for over a month and traffic was completely gone for a while, since we have dropped to about 40% of the monthly traffic the website was getting prior, i was waiting to see if the website will recover since we were getting some traffic and are ranking but that did not happen, is there a way to tell if there are any code issues or anything that can cause that drop? moz crawler only indicates normal meta description errors but nothing in the code, changing the theme would probably be best solution as a popular premade theme would give a definite answer but that is not possible.0 -
Redirecting one domain to another using utm tags
I have two live websites, which have both been live for over 10 years, so we have plenty of backlinks to both...domain1.com & domain2.com. Domain 1 and all urls is being merged into domain2.com. So 301 redirects will be setup for every page of the site....domain1.com/abc-1234/ to > domain2.com/abc-1234/ In Google analytics for domain2.com we want to be able to see which visits we have received as a result of a redirect from domain1.com. It is possible to see these visits that come in via organic, referrals and social etc, as those will come to us with the referral as domain1.com. However, with direct traffic, i.e. if someone types domain1.com into their search bar, these visits will be assigned as direct and we are not able to tell in GA if those users have typed in domain2.com, or domain1.com to get to our webpage. There are some suggestions in forums of adding utm_source tracking to all redirects (and add canonicals to those urls pointing to the non utm_source version), but my concern is that Google is going to have to go through one extra step to reach the page on the redirected domain. So without the utm source code Google will follow this route
Reporting & Analytics | | Sayers
domain1.com/123/ to domain2.com/123/ With the utm source code Google will follow this route
domain.com/123/ to domain2.com/123/?utm_source... then see's canonical, so moves to domain2.com/123/ So essentially I am giving Google one extra step to follow before it gets to the equivalent page on the new site. Is this an issue, and/or are there any other ways to track this redirection without adding extra parameters to the url?0 -
Tracking goals on a subdomain with traffic coming from main domain subfolders. Mission Impossible?
Hello guys, I'm facing a huge challenge setting my goals. Here is the situation. I'm having the same Universal Analytics code on my main domain with different languages www.example.com/en/, www.examples.com/fr/, etc and my www.shop.example.com subdomain. So a French user will go to www.example.com/fr/, see a product that want's to buy and after the registration will see a thank you page on www.shop.example.com/success.html, and here comes the problem. My goal URLs are not "fired" with my filter. I have set up a filter (attached) to include traffic only for the desired profiles, but when this filter is on I can't see conversions. When the filter is off I can see conversions but for all languages. Any ideas how to set up the filter properly? Thank you! Filter.png

Bounce Rates: Leaving my domain.com/blog to shop on mydomain.com counts as bounce rate?
Hello! I have a kind of difficult question. On my main domain i have: Store: mydomain.com and wordpress blog on mydomain.com/blog If I have a link to a specific product on my blog and user goes to the product on the store, will bounce rate increase or as it's the same domain will be like a new page view? Different CMS's and blog is on a different analytics account than the store. I hope i could explain myself! Thank you

Does GWT "Fetch as Google Bot" feature affect crawl rate?
Hello Mozians, I have noticed many people saying using GWT fetch as GoogleBot can affect your crawl rate in future, if used regularly. Though, i am not very sure if this is true or just another stale SEO myth. As currently GWT provides a limit of 500 URLs to fetch every month. I hope my doubts will be cleared by the Moz community experts. Thanks!

Feedburner stats show drop in multiple feeds from 6/21/13 to 6/22\. Anyone else seen the same?
Client has 3 RSS feeds in Feedburner, and they saw a drop in subscribers from 6/21 to 6/22. Wondering if anyone else has saw a drop recently. Obviously, this could be the results of multiple people cleaning up their feeds, but it appears too coincidental. Has anyone heard if there are any recent issues with Feedburner tracking?

Big Traffic Drops in Bing
I have a client that has been struggling with their organic traffic the over the past several months. We figured they had been hit by Penguin and some of Google's other algo changes...But I just dug in a little deeper in Google Analytics, and their traffic is actually up year over year for Google organic, but they are down 75% + for both Bing and Yahoo organic. They drop seemed to occur around April, 2012, and they have rapidly lost Bing and Yahoo traffic ever since. Can anyone help explain why this might be happening? A Bing and Yahoo algo update? Or just fewer people using those search engines possibly? I'm not quite sure how to make up for all the lost traffic in Bing and Yahoo. Any suggestions are appreciated!

What does "on first page" mean in seomoz ranking reports?
Hi - When reports here show numbers of keywords appearing "on first page", there must be some implicit assumption made about the number of results listed per page. 1. Can anyone tell me what that assumption is? Is it 10? 20? 2. What about universal results Local links? If the answer to number one is, for instance, 20 results per page, then are there any assumptions made about the number of universal results Local links included? I'm just trying to understand what the reports mean. Thanks, Tim
