I keep getting the "Googlebot found an extremely high number of URLs on your site" message in the GWMT for one of the sites that I manage.
The error is as below-
Googlebot encountered problems while crawling your site.
Googlebot encountered extremely large numbers of links on your site. This may indicate a problem with your site's URL structure. Googlebot may unnecessarily be crawling a large number of distinct URLs that point to identical or similar content, or crawling parts of your site that are not intended to be crawled by Googlebot. As a result Googlebot may consume much more bandwidth than necessary, or may be unable to completely index all of the content on your site.
I understand the nature of the message - the site uses a faceted navigation and is genuinely generating a lot of duplicate pages. However in order to stop this from becoming an issue we do the following;
- No-index a large number of pages using the on page meta tag.
- Use a canonical tag where it is appropriate
But we still get the error and a lot of the example pages that Google suggests are affected by the issue are actually pages with the no-index tag.
So my question is how do I address this problem?
I'm thinking that as it's a crawling issue the solution might involve the no-follow meta tag.

I feel we are missing some information here.
For example, for our site we have done a canonical on the pages where we have query parameters. We have also specified these parameters as representative URL in Google Webmaster - URL parameters. Even after this we received this message "Googlebot found an extremely high number of URLs on your site".
The surprising thing is that these parameters are existing on the site for a long time, and the total URL count is reducing. Even after this Google has started sending this message to us since Feb 2014. Seems there has been some algorithmic change because of which some additional conditions that have not been highlighted in this thread have to be taken care of.. Not sure what..

Although I generally find NOINDEX works better than Google claims, I think @donford is essentially right - you still need to solve some of the architecture issues, or Google will attempt to re-crawl.
It's a complex problem, and sometimes a combination of NOINDEX, canonical, 301s, 404s, rel=prev/next, etc. all come into play. You don't usually need a "perfect" solution, but one tool rarely fits all situations these days.
Google has suggested that you try parameter handling in GWT. NOINDEX won't prevent crawling (just indexation), but GWT parameters help save crawler bandwidth. I've had mixed results on large sites, honestly, but it may be worth a try.

Hi Ben,
You are attempting to fix your SEO issue by using NOINDEX & CANONICAL but you are not fixing the main issue which is the URL's are still there.
NOINDEX will not stop Google from recognizing the link nor will NOFOLLOW. They actually use every link's information in one form or another regardless of the tag attributes.
Here is a direct quote from Matt Cutts about NOINDEX:
"Our highest duty has to be to our users, not to an individual webmaster. When a user does a navigational query and we don’t return the right link because of a NOINDEX tag, it hurts the user experience (plus it looks like a Google issue).....

The first solution I would be interested in is working on the architecture of the site to see if there is a way to stop the crazy amount of URL's being generated and/or consolidate them to a single point. The next step would be to see if there is any commonality between these extra URL's and if there is any possibility to use a 301 redirect to consolidate these extra urls.
I think what you're really after was a way to fix this with a tag or patch, but I think the best way to fix this is to replace the engine that is driving these URL's. You're going to have to be a bit more specific in such case as to what kind of site you're using (Joomla, WordPress, Oscommerce, etc) for a more specific answer.

Penguin recovery, no manual action. Are our EMD sites killing our brand site?
Hi guys, Our brand site (http://urban3d.net) has been seeing steady decline due to algorithm updates for the past two years. Our previous SEO company engaged in some black-hat link building which has hurt us very badly. We have recently re-launched the site, with better design, better content, and completed a disavow of hundreds of bad links. The site is technically indexed, but is still nowhere in the SERPs after months of work to recover it by our internal marketing team. The last SEO company also told us to build EMD sites for our core services, which we did: http://3dvisualisation.co.uk/ http://propertybrochure.com/ http://kitchencgi.com/ My question is - could these EMD sites now hurting us even further and stopping our main brand site from ranking? Our plan is to rescue our brand site, with a view to retiring these outlier sites. However, with no progress on the brand site, we can't afford to remove these site (which are ranking). Troubled QA Platform - Site Map vs Site Structure
I'm running a Q&A forum that was built prioritizing UX over SEO. This decision has cause a bit of a headache as we're 6 months into the project with 2278 Q&A pages with extremely minimal traffic coming from search engines. The structure has the following hiccups: A. The category navigation from the main Q&A page is entirely javascript and only navigable by users. B. We identify Google bots and send them to another version of the Q&A platform w/o javascript. Category links don't exist in this google bot version of the main Q&A page. On this Google version of the main Q&A page, the Pinterest-like tiles displaying individual Q&As are capped at 10. This means that the only way google bot can identify link juice being passed down to individual QAs (after we've directed them to this page) is through 10 random Q&As. C. All 2278 of the QAs are currently indexed in search. They are just indexed very very poorly in SERPs. My personal assumption, is that Google can't pass link juice to any of the Q&As (poor SERP) but registers them from the site map so it gets included in Google's index. My dilemma has me struggling between two different decisions: 1. Update the navigation in the header to remove the javascript and fundamentally change the look and feel of the Q&A platform. This will allow Google bot to navigate through Expert category links to pass link juice to all Q&As. or 2. Update the redirected main Q&A page to include hard coded category links with 100s of hard coded Q&As under each category page. Make it similar, ugly, flat and efficient for the crawling bots. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I need to find a solution as soon as possible.

301 entire site
Is there a good 301 code snippet to change just the root domain but keep the ending extensions? I just bid on a domain that I think would be much better for me moving forward, but do not want to have to try going through thousands of pages to do their 301 individually My site is almost 4 yrs old. Well established and has a large fanbase. Several of our social networks are under the name of the new branded domain, hence part of the desire to switch.

Splitting a Site into Two Sites for SEO Purposes
I have a client that owns a business that really could be easily divided into two separate business in terms of SEO. Right now his web site covers both divisions of his business. He gets about 5500 visitors a month. The majority go to one part of his business and around 600 each month go to the other. So about 11% I'm considering breaking off this 11% and putting it on an entirely different domain name. I think I could rank better for this 11%. The site would only be SEO'd for this particular division of the company. The keywords would not be in competition with each other. I would of course link the two web sites and watch that I don't run into any duplicate content issues. I worry about placing the redirects from the pages that I remove to the new pages. I know Google is not a fan of redirects. Then I also worry about the eventual drop in traffic to the main site now. How big of a factor is traffic in rankings? Other challenges include that the business services 4 major metropolitan areas. Would you do this? Have you done this? How did it work? Any suggestions?

Changing Site URLs
I am working on a new client that hasn't implemented any SEO previously. The site has terrible url nomenclature and I am wondering if it is worth it to try and change it. Will I lose rankings? Hello, people. I have a quick question regarding search in Google. I use search operator [site:url] to see indexing stauts of my site. Today, I was checking indexing status and I found that Google shows different numbers of indexed pages depends on search setting. 1. At default setting (set as 10 search result shows) > I get about 150 pages indexed by Google. 2. I set 100 results shows per page and tried again. > I get about 52 pages indexed by Google. Of course I used same page URL. I really want to know which data is accurate. Please help people!!

Metrics:1 linking domain, PA 35, DA 59, PR5 I know PR is no longer relevant and usually ignore this metric (except for possible penalties) and just focus on Seomoz toolbar metrics, but as my own site itself is PA:37 and DA:28 homepage but PR0 completely sitewide (over 6 months old but relatively new site), I thought this might help to balance things.
