A google ranking problem
-
HI,
Thought I would try SEOMoz out for a while and I am going to dive straight into my initial problem.
I have my client moving up nicely in local Google search within my country but the problem is he seems to have actually slipped down a place when I search on google.com/ncr. (and on Rank Tracker)
He does sell locally but is a worldwide supplier of his product and wants to obviously rank well everywhere.
I understand why he has moved up locally but don't get the shift down internationally.
So,
1. If everyone's Google is forcing local search results on everyone, how do you market better internationally.
2. Noticed that his competitors are all getting clever and now using keywords in their URL. Two guys are new on first page Google just because they have Keyworded urls. (killing me). The one guy has one backlink!! (although the client does have a keyworded URL stashed away but we don't want to got that route because we like to keep things 'white hat')
The client is happy because when he searches he see's his site moving up nicely but I have a conscience and I am going to have to tell him whats going on. (that his Google is showing local results)
I hope that all makes sense.
Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,
I do think that there is going to be an even more local bias in search results; and we will see a lot more of the phenomenon that you describe above ie.a site going up in local/ country-specific results while going down in international results. While it will not be impossible to rank highly globally, it has and will continue to become a lot more challenging to do so, especially for terms that are quite competitive.
To market better internationally - or specific geographic markets, you may need to give those geo signals to Google, which could be having country-targeted pages on the site; geo-targeted sub-domains/ sub-folders or even separate websites targeted at a market that you are targeting.
Regarding the second issue, if I understand you correctly, having keywords in the url isn't bad/ black hat-- it is perfectly legitimate and recommended (though not necessarily a must-have). So, if it doesn't involve a whole lot of re-development and you feel that is making a huge difference in the space you are operating, then you should go for it.
Hope this helps.
Best,
Manoj

Google places certainly helps your local results but it shouldn't have too much impact on your .com ranking as far as I know.
There may well be some other issues with the site but without doing an audit of the site in question, I can only speculate.

Thanks for the answer.
Sorry when I meant 'white hat' it was more about keeping it on his brand name where as the other guys are using keywords and not their brand names. Almost having two sites. I have just updated keywords in some of our urls. Was more the home pages (www.keyword.com, we do use www.brandname.com/keyword )
I wasn't aware that that exact keywords are receiving less importance these days.
And he is on a .com and I have been trying quality links from both U.S and European sites to make it more international.
Do you think using Google places affects things? After all it places you squarely on a map.

There could be a number of factors affecting your rank in Google.com compared to your local Google search engine. Ultimately, Google will return results it believes are most relevant to the particular country. If there are strong local indicators on your website (local hosting, local domain extension such as .co.uk, localized content, links from local domains, setting a geographic target in webmaster tools) and very few international indicators, then you cannot expect to rank well for both Google.com and your local Google.
On a side note, having keywords in urls is not black hat and is even encouraged to help pages rank. I think you may be confusing keywords in a url e.g. http://www.company.com/keyword with exact match domains e.g. http://www.keyword.com. However, the use of either is not considered black hat seo. It is worth noting that exact match domains are receiving less importance from Google in serps in preference to brand sites.
Adam.

Any practical examples of ranking 1 domain in multiple countries?
Hi, I've done a fair amount of research on international SEO including here on MOZ but was hoping some fellow Mozzers might have some practical examples of how they have got 1 domain to rank in multiple countries, ideally US & UK. Im possibly looking at getting a high authority domain which ranks great on US into the UK engines. I want to keep to the 1 domain to benefit from the high authority and for logistical reasons. Thanks in advance, Andy

Google Places and Hotel Finder
I work with a few hotels in Costa Rica and Nicaragua. Google Places has not launched in these regions so it has been impossible for me to start an account and get my properties listed in hotel finder. Somehow my competition has managed to get one of their properties listed and it's killing me! Does anyone know of any way to speed up the process? I'm very involved with Google+, FB, Twitter, Pinterest but G Places and Hotel finder or Google Maps don't want to pick me up. Any ideas? Thanks Mozzers. aSrDvhr

Are my translated pages damaging my ranking?
Hi there, I have a site in English but with duplicates in different languages. The first problem is that these translated versions of my site receive no ranking on google stars (while the english does) - why is this? The second problem is that SEOmoz counts the errors on my site and then duplicates this error count for all the translated versions of my site - meaning I have a huge amount of errors (too many on-page links). Add this to the fact that I use affilite ID´s to track different types of traffic to my site - so all page urls in english and other languages, with an affiliate id on the end of the url, count as an error. This means I have a huge amount of on page errors indicated by SEOmoz, plus no ranking for my translated pages - I think this is really harming my overall ranking and site trust. What are your opinions on this?

Getting ranked in French on Google UK ?
Hellooooo the Moz community ! (#superexcited, # firstpost) Here's my problem. I'm working for a client specialised in Corporate Relocation to London for French families. (I'm reworking the entire site from the ground up, so I can manoeuvre pretty easily) The thing is, these families will either be : Searching on Google FR but mostly in English (French as well) Searching on Google UK but mostly in French ! (and of course, English as well) To be honest, I'm really not sure what strategy I should go with. Should I just target each local market in its native language and google will pick up the right language if people are searching in the "opposite" language ? I'd love some tips to help get me started. Sadly, I don't have a lot of data yet. (Client didn't even have tracking up on their site before I came in). So far here's what I got (on very small number of visitors): Location: 50+% from UK / 20+% from France.

It means a lot. -My keyword's Global and Local montly search is 1300 (exact) -Seomoz Rank Tracker shows that I rank ( on Page #1, Position #2 in Google / United Kingdom) -I use always private browsing to check my rankings -my domain is a .com and I bought the domain name from godaddy -Hosting is 1&1 and their server is in Germany. Which is a shame, I ve just realized 😞 -My site ranks on Google.uk (The web) but doesnt rank Google.co.uk (pages from uk). Is this the problem? I ve just change the target country to United Kingdom using webmaster tool. Will it help? When I search a query , I dont change it to ''pages from uk'' it came automaticly (the web). Does people care and change it to the ""pages from UK"? I had some clicks at first when my site was page #1 position #8-9 but now its position #2 and I get no clicks at all. Thanks

Will Google punish me cuz my websites content are almost the same?
If I have almost the same contents for my three e-commerce websites, say A.com,B.uk,C.ca. They're promoted in US, GB, Canada which are all English speaking. Will my site be punished because they're almost the same to Google?

Differents TLDs and same contents not a problem Matt Cutts says?
Matt Cutts says on this video that you can have the same content on different TLDs and there is no duplicate content for Google. Have someone try this experience? For example : same content on "mysite.fr" and "mysite.be". And for the visitors from Belgium, will they see into the SERPs "mysite.be" and for the visitors from France "mysite.fr"? Thank you for your answer guys. Jon watch?v=Ets7nHOV1Yo&feature=player_embedded
