Switching URL from keyword heaven to actual brand name?
-
Our client has a site, we'll say it's delicious-lemonade.com (That's an example.)
Their brand name, however, is PowerSky. (That's an example, but the point is that it's the name of a technology, and has NOTHING to do whatsoever with being a drink. Someone would never guess what the product was, by the brand name.)
The client has this domain name for a long time. The domain name itself is a top keyword for their product.
We are building a new site for the client and have planned to use the brand name (PowerSky) as the primary domain, so PowerSky.com, with the product page being PowerSky.com/Delicious-Lemonade. And we are planning to redirect Delicious-Lemonade.com to PowerSky.com.
However, we are concerned about the SEO hit the site is going to take.
What recommendations can you make in this situation?
-
You have a couple of options. You can try asking this question again in public Q&A, as the site has a lot more activity than it did in April. Another option is to use a private Q&A question and ask this where only SEOmoz staff and associates can see it. The advantage there is that the question is private and not indexed, and the staff/associates are under an NDA and won't disclose the contents of the question so you can use real URLs if needed.

We are still looking for some insight. Since the answers we got weren't from SEOMoz staff, we just took them as more opinions.

Hi Grayloon,
I'm going through older questions that are still marked unanswered. Did you come to a decision about what to do, or are you still looking for some insight?
-
Sounds like you are doing a category instead of a product. You have a couple options. 1) Do what you are describing 2) Apache Mod Rewrite and 301 the old urls. I saw a video of Rand talking about option 2. He says it'll lose all it's ranking at 1st, but they typically see about a 50-60% drop in volume once it's back up.
-
Full disclosure: I'm no sage in SEO.
Do the appropriate 301 redirects for each page. Grit your teeth as you take a small hit. Then watch http://www.seomoz.org/webinars/what-signals-could-make-you-a-brand-in-google

Canonical URL Tag Usage
I have a large website, almost 1500 pages that each market different keywords for the trucking logistics industry. I don't really understand the new Canonical URL Tag USAGE. They say to use it so the page is not a duplicate but the page that MOZ is call for to have the tag isn't a duplicate. It promotes 1 keyword that no other page directly promotes. Here is the page address, now what tag would I put up in the HEAD so google don't treat it as a duplicate page. http://www.freightetc.com/c/heavyhaul/heavyhaul.php 1. Number 1 the actual page address because I want it treated like its own page or do I have to use #2 below? 2. I don't know why I would use #2 as I want it to be its own page, and get credit and listed and ranked as its own page. Can anyone clarify this stuff to me as I guess i am just new to this whole tag usage.

On Page Optimization, F on all keywords?
On our website we have all F's even though we have the targeted keyword in the title, url, meta desc, h1, body and some of the img alt's. They still show zero uses of the keyword. Are we missing something here or is this some kind of bug or glitch? Any help or advice is appreciated, Thanks. Our company is ranking no.1 for brand keyword, however, when you try to find it by two words(with space between) then all those shows up and the website is nowhere to find. Any suggestions on how to solve this without the need to be ranked for something related

Hi there, my question is: If I select and optimize in the page a keyword like "english courses in Boston" if someone type in Google only english courses, would my site be shown up in first places in the SERPs (if I had done a good onpage and offpage optimization)? or someone who has optimize the page with the keyword "english courses" would be in a preference place? Thanks

Keyword stuffing - is it true?
Hi, I use On-Page Report Card for this url (the web is in Bulgarian) : http://cholakovit.com My keyword is in Bulgarian - "уеб дизайн" (which means "web design". It shows me that my keywords is: " Total Keyword Usage for this Page = 5875 "I cannot find so many instances of this keyword. Only 13 uses for "уеб" and 10 for "дизайн" in the whole page code. Is there an error in the report? When I search the English version -http://cholakovit.com/enwhich is almost the same but translated in English of the page for the key phrase "web design" it shows only "Total Keyword Usage for this Page = 8"

The URL Inside
Howdy SEO'ers, I have a quick question for the SEO gurus out there. When constructing "better" search friendly URLs would one of these be better than the other? Example 1: http://Domain.com/Category/Sub-Category/Product-name Example 2: http://Category.Domain.com/Sub-Category/Product-name In this example the category could be phones and the sub-category brands of phones. Is either one of these URLs "better" than the other in terms of ranking? Thanks! I'll hang-up and listen to your answer. 🙂 Jonathan
