Multiple domains vs. Single domain
-
I've been reading up on this subject, but I still can't clearly decide which is better. Your insights will help me a lot.
I work for a client with 1 powerful corporate website and many small dedicated websites to individual projects. Which strategy would I focus on? The powerful corporate or the small individual websites?
As I see it:
Which is better?
- One powerful domain with lots of pages dedicated to a single subject
- PRO: more inbound links, more pages, sometimes URL exact match
- CON: less focused on a single 'theme'
- Different domains dedicated to different subjects
- PRO: more focus per domain to a subject
- CON: less inbound links, less pages... less power
Thanks in advance.
- One powerful domain with lots of pages dedicated to a single subject

That's great! I'd love to see how your campaign progresses. Keep me in the loop!

Thanks for taking the time to respond Josh.
I think you've summed it up nicely - and therefore helped me made up my mind (at last)

Hi Partouter,
I prefer option #1, "a single powerful domain" for a few reasons:
- It's always easier to pass link juice from an authoritative top level domain than it is to drum it up from scratch. With good site-architecture you can achieve faster indexing results with landing pages organized by topic/category.
- Consolidating all of your content under one website helps reinforce your brand over time. It's better to be an information hub for your audience than it is to capture traffic from a bunch of fragmented mini-sites.
- Search Engines crack down on folks who own a lot of interlinked domains that all speak about the same subject matter. It can be difficult to create unique subject matter for each of your microsites, unless your client is a corporate conglomerate like GE or Johnson & Johnson
Now, personally, I have used smaller, niche sites to rank for long-tail searches. But I only took this approach when my client has a legitimate service or product that deserves this level of attention. This is more common with geo-targeted search terms (i.e. a product or service that is specific to Boston, MA; Los Angeles, CA; etc.)
Best of luck!

Amazon RTMP S3 vs Vimeo PRO vs Wistia? (Download Protection)
Context: A membership site, focused on a Russian market which is known to culturally pirate everything they see. Granted: ultimately you cannot hide video as a person can take a screen-capture/video camera method ultimately. Having said that. Is it still worth going the RTMP S3 route? Vs say Vimeo and Wistia. Will it help a bit or its a technology that is dying? Also with Vimeo PRO vs Wistia generally Vimeo is better value, but how is their analytics compared to Wistia (per user stats) if possible? Vimeo is a very popular, therefore downloaded 3rd party apps exist plentifully, is Wistia's platform unique to Vimeo in terms of its embed format if its same format this means that the commonly available tools as for Vimeo will work for Wistia, how ever if its different, and less popular as RTMP S3 is in this case less tools are available for it. Is that the case for Wistia?

.png vs .jpg - Which ranks better or does it matter?
Hi Moz community, I am working on a SEO project (ecommerce) and most of the images on the website are .png and I notice they do not rank but yet the .jpg do. Do you recommend I change all the .png to .jpg? They all have alt text and keyword filenames (no spam 🙂 Here is the website www.moldear.com.ar. Notice the swimming pool coping tiles are .png and the swimming pool images are .jpg. I cannot get the coping images to rank for some reason Thanks Carla

Local Search for Multiple Locations
Hi Folks, The company I work for is based in Kendal in Cumbria in the United Kingdom (that's our head office) but as we are a training company and we have training locations all over the UK, how would I go about updating the local listings to reflect this. I'd like to specifically target our London based venues. Any help much appreciated. Gaz

Footer links vs Homepage Content
We are redesigning this site http://www.crystalshop.co.uk/ but not reinstating the ecommerce yet so the primary aim of the site is to increase foot traffic in the shops. The list of shops on the RHS of the homepage is really messy but is useful. I would like to move these to the footer... is this a bad idea? If this is, is it a bit of a gamble to move it to the bottom of the homepage rather than higher up as it is? We are already featuring a link to the shop finder page but I want to get the locations in as prominent place as possible but it's quite a long list!

Google + with multiple locations
Hi guys, So I want to make a google + page for my business, which basically lets people find and compare multiple airport shuttle, limo and transfer companies to find the one that is available and best suits their budget.

Being that these shuttle services are throughout the country, when I create the google + page I need to choose multiple locations.
Anyone know how to go about this, or the best way to do it? Thanks so much Regards,

Which domain to use for SE business listings?
For a first time, new website. I have a Barber shop in Hartford named "Dixie Cutters" with two domains, dixiecutters.com and barberhartford.com. Obviously the latter domain has two main keywords, barber and location...Hartford. So it would be better to use that and use a 301 redirect for dixiecutters.com to redirect to barberhartford.com. Many online directories including SE listings on Google Places, BIng and Yahoo have already been set up withe domain "dixiecutters.com" and the email address info@dixiecutters.com. If I choose to make barberhartford.com the primary domain with dixiecutters.com 301 redirecting to it....does this mean that I should then change the directory listings and more specifically, the SE business listings so that they have the primary domain listed (barbarhartford.com) with an email address like...info@barberhartford.com? Or can I leave all of this alone and keep as stated above without any SEO local consequences. I know consistency is a big issue with NAP. I also know it's recommended to use an email address with your domain name in the SE business listings. If a 301 is in place, can I use dixiecutters.com in my listings?
