Why does my crawl diagnostics show duplicate content
-
My crawl diagnostics show duplicate content at mysite.com and mysite.com/index.html which are essentially the same file.
-
Michel is right - Google doesn't care that they're one template - if both URLs are being crawled, then they'll see that as two "pages". Every unique, crawlable URL can become an indexed page. That's why duplicate content problems are so common.
The good news is that you can put a canonical tag on just the one template/file and it will cover all of the paths/URLs that land on that file. The tag goes in your section and looks like:
I'd check the internal links, though, and see if you're linking to both versions. It's best to use one, consistent URL in your internal links for any given page.
-
mysite.com is a domain not a file with mysite.com/index.html being the home page. Not sure how I would do what you suggest.
-
If the crawl report found those two URLs, then your website has at least one link to each of those URLs (otherwise Rogerbot wouldn't have found them).
You should follow Collin's advice to define the canonical page.
It also won't hurt to figure out where those links are being used in your content, and then make sure you only use one to point to your page.
Cheers
Michel

"Essentially" the same file isn't the same as "the same file." Your best bet is probably to mark one of them (probably mysite.com) with rel=canonical.

Crawl diagnostics incorrectly reporting duplicate page titles
Hi guys, I have a question in regards to the duplicate page titles being reported in my crawl diagnostics. It appears that the URL parameter "?ctm" is causing the crawler to think that duplicate pages exist. In GWT, we've specified to use the representative URL when that parameter is used. It appears to be working, since when I search site:http://www.causes.com/about?ctm=home, I am served a single search result for www.causes.com/about. That begs the question, why is the SEOMoz crawler saying there is duplicate page titles when Google isn't (doesn't appear under the HTML improvements for duplicate page titles)? A canonical URL is not used for this page so I'm assuming that may be one reason why. The only other thing I can think of is that Google's crawler is simply "smarter" than the Moz crawler (no offense, you guys put out an awesome product!). Any help is greatly appreciated and I'm looking forward to being an active participant in the Q&A community! Cheers, Brad

The crawl report shows a lot of 404 errors
They are inactive products, and I can't find any active links to these product pages. How can I tell where the crawler found the links?

Site Not On Google, SEOmoz shows as 43
The site I'm helping with was at one time a page 1, even #1 on page 1. Lots of changes, problems when someone else did something and dropped to page 4 for keyword. After some recent tweaking I did, it no longer shows on rankings. No penalty on Google Webmaster, in Webmaster tools it shows the sitemap processed with no errors. SEOmoz still shows it at #43 in Rankings. Why does SEOmoz see it, but I don't? Site is www.plussizeplum.com (sorry, plus size women's lingerie) and keywords are "plus size lingerie".

Getting rid of duplicate content
Hi everyone, I'm a newbie and at the moment don't know very much about SEO. I have a problem with some of my campaigns where i keep getting a report with either Duplicate Page and/or Duplicate Content errors. I have no idea how to rectify this error, remove it or fix it on the relevant websites. Can anyone please help explain how to do this, maybe step by step? I really appreciate your views and opinions! Regards, Hugh

I have a Rel Canonical "notice" in my Crawl Diagnostics report. I'm presuming that means that the spider has detected a rel canonical tag and it is working as opposed to warning about an issue, is this correct?
I know this seems like a really dumb question but the site I'm working on is a BigCommerce one and I've been concerned about canonicalisation issues prior to receiving this report (I'm a SEOmoz pro newbie also!) and I just want to be clear I am reading this notice correctly. I presume this means that the site crawl has detected the rel canonical tag on these pages and it is working correctly. Is this correct?? Any input is much appreciated. Thanks

Seomoz crawling filtered pages
Hi, I just checked an seo campaign we started last week, so I opened seomoz to see the crawl diagnostics. Lot's of duplicate content & duplicate titles showing up, but that's because Rogerbot is crawling all of the filtered pages as well. How do I exclude these pages from being crawled? /product/brand-x/3969?order=brand&sortorder=ASC

Links listed in MozPro Crawl Diagnostics
Ok, seeing as I'm getting to the end of my first week as a Pro Member, I'm getting more and more feedback regarding the pages on my site. I'm slightly concerned though that, having logged in this morning, I'm being shown 407 warnings for pages with 'Too Many On Page Links.' According to the blurb at the top of the page, 'Too Many' is generally defined as being over 100 links on a page ... but when I look at the pages which are being thrown up in the report, none of them contain anywhere near 100 links. I seriously doubt there is a glitch with the tool which has led me to think that maybe there's an issue with the way my site is coded. Is anyone aware of a coding problem that may lead Google and SEOMoz to suspect that I have a load of links across my site? P.S. As an aside, when this tool mentions 'Too Many Links' is it referring purely to OBL or does it count links to elsewhere on my domain too? Cheers,
