Huge diifference linking root domains in SEO MOZ and opensite explorer
-
Hi there, I have fairly large site that has never really been optimised. I think an old forum i hosted has either been spammed or my webmaster at the time used some black hat techniques to get me more root linking domains. I am a newbie and would really appreciate if someone could just quickly look at my donain and confirm that this is a problem and something i should fix before i start my SEO campaign. I am also worried this will negatively effect my domain authority.
I dont really want to broadcast my domain so if anyoone would be so kind to confirm the problem so i cant start to research the answer.
Thanks v much

Thanks so much Brent . Really appreciate your time. Will get onto this

When you are ready to start, you should run a report with www.opensiteexplorer.org and export all of your inbound links to an excel spreadsheet. That way you can sort them by the PA and DA and start figuring out how to contact the website to get the link removed.
Or if that isn't an option, it may be best to let a lot of those bad links 404 on your site so Google knows that those pages don't exist.
But cleanup your internal structure, setup XMl sitemaps, and make sure there are no errors (internally).

Hey Brent sorry each answer seems to lead to another question. Last one
when you say "Then start the cleanup of inbound links." Could you point me in the direction i need to look into doing this?
Cheers

The first thing I would focus on would be the url restructure of the site.
Then 301 all old urls to the new urls
Then start the cleanup of inbound links.

Hey Brent, cheers as i thought.
I already have webmaster tools there are 186 crawl errors under not found and 7 under mobile not found. Do i need to apply to have all of these removed? Will this remove these spammy backlinks.
Also hope you dont mind one more question.
My domains are currently structured like this www.mydomain.com/index.php/page-alias
I want to change them to this format www.mydomain.com/folder/page-alias.htm
Seeing that 95% of my backlinks are to my homepage would not change and the site doesn't rank on many keywords except the brand am i right in thinking now id a good time to make this change with a view as a starting point for my SEO
Does this make sense?
Thanks very much

Taking a quick look you have a ton of spammy bad links coming in and they are going to internal existing, and non existing pages.
57 - Linking domains to home page
3,766 - Linking domains to all pages
You have a lot of cleanup to do. I would start by setting up your account with Google Webmaster Tools and running an internal scan to start cleaning up everything.

Too many dofollow links = penalty?
Hi. I currently have 150 backlinks, 90% of them are dofollow, while only 10% are nofollow. I recently hit position #10 for my main keyword, but now it is dropped to #16 and a lot of related keywords are gone. So I have a few questions: 1. Was my website penalized for having an unnatural backlink profile (too many dofollow links), or maybe this drop in positions is just a temporary, natural thing? 2. Isn’t it too late for making the backlink profile look more natural by building more nofollow backlinks and making it 50%/50%? Thank you!

How to dismantle a link building scheme?
My team performs SEO only in the real estate space. While doing some research recently we came across a semi-elaborate link building scheme by one of our competitors. This SEO firm built a dummy real estate resource site with lots of general content, nofollow links to brands (e.g. NYT, Fannie Mae etc.) for validation and links for high-valued keywords pointing to their clients' sites. Basically the whole site is a clever front to help their clients rank. Still, it seems to be working for them (at least for now), which I'm guessing is due to lack of strong competition and the site being quite old. Oh, and they also charge to become "affiliates" on the site, i.e. paid links disguised as non-paid. I reported the scheme via the Search Console. Anything else we could do? Have any of you had experience dealing with this kind of link scheming before? Any guidance is appreciated. Thank you!

The use of a ghost site for SEO purposes
Hi Guys, Have just taken on a new client (.co.uk domain) and during our research have identified they also have a .com domain which is a replica of the existing site but all links lead to the .co.uk domain. As a result of this, the .com replica is pushing 5,000,000+ links to the .co.uk site. After speaking to the client, it appears they were approached by a company who said that they could get the .com site ranking for local search queries and then push all that traffic to .co.uk. From analytics we can see that very little referrer traffic is coming from the .com. It sounds remarkably dodgy to us - surely the duplicate site is an issue anyway for obvious reasons, these links could also be deemed as being created for SEO gain? Does anyone have any experience of this as a tactic? Thanks, Dan

SEO for Career sites and sup-pages
For main job categories: We manage several career pages for several clients but the competition for the main keywords (even several long tail) is from big names like Indeed and similar job boards?

What would you recommend? For job posts: Since the job posts that our clients post are short lived (80% live less than a month) would it still be incorrect to purchase backlinks? or is it always a big no Thanks for your help. And if a similar question has been asked I would appreciate if you could point me to it. I could not find one.0 -

My website got a link from an internal page with PR rank of 2 but the domain has the PR rank 5. For example - A domain www.example.com with PR rank 5 and internal page www.example.com/extra/1 PR rank 2. I got a link from the internal page, will I benefit from main domain Page rank 5? Thanks, Sameer

SEO best practice: Use tags for SEO purpose? To add or not to add to Sitemap?
Hi Moz community, New to the Moz community and hopefully first post/comment of many to come. I am somewhat new to the industry and have a question that I would like to ask and get your opinions on. It is most likely something that is a very simple answer, but here goes: I have a website that is for a local moving company (so small amounts of traffic and very few pages) that was built on Wordpress... I was told when I first started that I should create tags for some of the cities serviced in the area. I did so and tagged the first blog post to each tag. Turned out to be about 12-15 tags, which in turn created 12-15 additional pages. These tags are listed in the footer area of each page. There are less than 20 pages in the website excluding the tags. Now, I know that each of these pages are showing as duplicate content. To me, this just does not seem like best practices to me. For someone quite new to the industry, what would you suggest I do in order to best deal with this situation. Should I even keep the tags? Should I keep and not index? Should I add/remove from site map? Thanks in advance for any help and I look forward to being a long time member of SEOMoz.
