Is it worth switching from .net to .com if you own both domain names
-
For over 20 years the company I work for has used www.company.net as their TLD, because we could not register www.company.com at that time. However, currently we also own www.company.com
www.company.com has a 301 re-direct to www.company.net We are a global company, and market leader in our industry. Our company name is associated with the product we make, and our competitors use our company name as their targeted keywords to attract visitors to their sites because our company name is synonym with the product we and they make.
As we are a global company we also have lots of TLDcc's. The email address of all our employees worldwide have a .net email address extension.
Would you advice switching from www.company.net to www.company.com??? And if so, what would be the reasons for this switch. Would it only be for branding purposes?
Looking forward to some insights before taking on such an invasive switch (because of the switch of all email addresses of employees worldwide).
Best regards,
Astrid Groeneveld

Astrid,
David is right; you will put almost the entire backlinks' profile of .net at risk. The quantum of the risk and the subsequent results are factors that nobody would be able to predict with perfection.

Hi Astrid,
It could be argued that .com domains correlate better with higher rankings that .net domains, however there is no certainty as to whether the search engines use this domain distinction as a ranking factor (and if so, how much weight it holds in their overall algorithm)
It could also be argued that a .com domain carries more trust from a brand perspective, so there is an overall marketing case to be put forward for switching.
However...
From an SEO point of view, any potential benefit you'd receive from switching to a .com (which in my opinion would be very little) would be counter-acted (and possible outweighed) by the link juice you'd lose from 301'ing your existing domain and all the links it's received over the years. There is no exact figure on what kind of link power you'd lose, but have a read on the test on losing link juice from a 301 redirect.
So as an SEO excercise, I would say you'll receive very little benefit from switching, and more likely you would see rankings drop in the short-medium term. It could be a different story from a marketing perspective, but whoever is making the decision should be aware of the SEO consequences.
Thanks
David

Migration to a new domain
Hi everyone, So i have one project where I'm planning to move current content on new domain, two reasons: 1. It seems current domain has some google penalty (backlink related, not manual) 2. Client wants rebranding and already has domain with new brand name. So as content is high quality and there is no content related penalty from google, what would be the best way to migrate existing content without passing any penalty AND without Google treating it as duplicate content. If i do 301 i suspect any penalty there is might follow, if i just copy existing content it won't be original content, what is the best solution here? Thanks

Domain name change
Here's the scenario... Client has two domain names: domain.com - targeting one country (Australia) otherdomain.com - targeting all other countries Both have identical products, but different currencies (AU$ and US$). The problem (as most of you will know) is that without using a sub-domain or country-code top-level domains, Google has no idea which domain should be served for which domain. Furthermore, because the root domain is different, Google doesn't see any connection between the two - other than the fact they have identical products! My recommendation to the client is to change to: domain.com to domain.com.au otherdomain.com to domain.com Arguably, we could leave the second one alone. But I think it's better for the brand to use the same root domain for each. Obviously this means both will need to be redirected. Since NONE of the pages within the sites will change, do we need to redirect every page, or just the root domain? Any other risks or concerns we should know about?

Lower quality new domain link vs higher quality repeat domain link
First time poster here with a dilemma that head scratching and spreadsheets can't solve! I'm trying to work out whether to focus on getting links from new domains or to nurture relationships with the bigger sites in our business and get more links. Of the two links below which does the community here think would be more valuable a signal to Google? Both would be links from within relevant text/post copy. Link 1. Site DA 30. No links currently from this domain. Link 2. Site DA 60. Many links over last 12 months already from this domain. I suspect link 1 but given the enormous disparity in ranking power am I correct?! Thanks for any considered opinions out there! Matthew

Why domain authority increase
Hi all Our domian authority has increased from 39 to 42 last week. We have been improving our metadata and removing bad backlinks recently. Is there any other reason or updates last week that would have resulted in this increase? Thanks

EMD.net or PMD.com?
I've had a successful online business for the past 8 years, and my website was consistently on the front page of Google for 5 of the years, almost all of my longtail (that's an old term huh?) keywords as well as my top choice, vanity keywords. However, with the last update and Google's brand push, I've gotten beaten up pretty badly, falling to 3rd, 4th and 5th page results. Maybe I could have saved them (disavow some links, improve speed) but I had a really happy and horrific event in my life, the birth of my first child. Happy because I've wanted a family since I was 13, horrific because she's been ill, and it's only my wife and I taking care of her. I literally haven't been back to sit in front of my computer for the past 3 months except to do quick searches on medicines, treatments, etc. So now that I have some freedom to get back to work, and our major selling season is over (with a massive drop in sales) I'm considering on re-branding with a new url (our reputation suffered a lot too, late shipments, long customer service waits). The current url is a partial match domain relative to the two categories of products I sell - thisproductandthatproduct.com. However, one of these categories of products I want to drop because that side of the business no longer represents a profitable market, but I want to keep selling the other category of product. I own productname.net and and old fashion iproductname.com. I know that it's possible to rank .net's but since I'm in the online retail field, .com's usually have more success. The iproductname.com I think I can brand successfully, but the i in the domain name makes it kind of cliche and old fashioned. The Exact Match Domain .net is really, REALLY tempting, because it represents a search that is done about 250k per month. But, it's a .net, and might be more of a struggle since Google seems to be cracking down on EMD's, which sucks because my site is not a content or affiliate traffic site, but a retail source. And, that's not the end of my predicament. Do I start from scratch, or redirect. The current url is ten years old, with about a PR4 according to seobook's browser tool. It's still within the first 100 results, which might or might not mean it still has some authority. I was thinking about redirecting the category pages to the new url and keeping the old one as an informational page for old customers, with a link to the new site, then redirecting later on. Any suggestions would be really helpful.

Age of a re-directed domain same as age of a static domain?
I know domain age plays a role in SEO--but, I am wondering if a domain is set up to 301 re-direct to another domain if it builds the same amount of authority over time as the static domain--just looking at age as a ranking factor, not links accumulated over time.

Multi domain redirect to single domain
Hello, all SEOers. Today, I would like to get some ideas about handling multiple domains. I have a client who bought numerous domains under purpose of prevent abuse of their brand name and at the same time for future uses. This client bought more than 100 domains. Some domains are paused, parked, lived and redirected to other site. I don't worry too much of parked domains and paused domains. However, what I am worrying is that there are about 40 different domains are now redirected to single domain and meta refresh was used for redirections. As far as I know, this can raise red flag for Google. I asked clients to clean up unnecessary domains, yet they want to keep them all. So now I have to figure out how to handle all domains which are redirect to single domain. So far, I came up with following ideas. 1. Build gateway page which shows lists of my client sites and redirect all domains to gateway page. 2. Implement robots.txt file to all different domains 3. Delete the redirects and leave it as parked domains. Could anyone can share other ideas in order to handling current status? Please people, share your ideas for me.
