Strange traffic - panda, penguin? Screenshots attached.
-
Hi,
I'm unsure if I've been hit by penguin/panda. I've attached screenshots below. The first one is April 1st to today. The second is all of April and the 3rd is 1st June to today. The site was offline at the beginning of July which explains no traffic. My traffic took a dip though on April 6th which as I understand it wasn't a panda/penguin roll out? I then got hardly any traffic for May to mid June. Then the site was offline due to a server problem but when it came back on traffic was the highest it has ever been. Today however I am getting zero search engine traffic?
I can't figure out what's going on. Can anyone shed any light on the issue?

The directory /feed/ is for your RSS, this wont cause site wide drops in traffic so that isn't the problem.
If you have an RSS go to { http://www.yourdomain.com/feed/ }
-
In webmaster tools I have 5 access denied to urls that end in /feed/
-
As long as it is in the header.php and that header appears on every page of your site your ok.
-
I am using Wordpress and have analytics code installed in the header. Is that right?
-
Have you checked the source of traffic in your analytics report? That should be able to explain a lot.
Are you tracking SERPs (rank positions) for your site?
-
Thanks for your reply. I suppose it could possible be the 3rd April update. However that wouldn't explain how the traffic returns even stronger in July.
The site was offline for about 10 days. I do see search terms related to the click and have been receiving enquiries which leads me to believe the traffic sent is genuine.
All the pages are indexed in google but as of this morning I am getting no traffic whatsoever. As you can see apart from the site downtime I have always got a few clicks every day from long tail keywords. (just to confirm the site is up and working fine today but no traffic).

This looks like it could be a code issue, have you made sure that the analytic code is inserted correctly in either your header or footer. If you are 100% happy that you have it inserted correctly can you check through another source to see if you are getting traffic from them Bing or yahoo will do.
If Bing and Yahoo are producing traffic this might suggest that there is an issue with Google accessing your site, check your robots.txt to make sure that it isn't blocking Google accessing certain content.
Also check your keywords and indexed pages to see if they have dropped with your traffic.

Hiya,
Please look at the following link to find out the chronology of updates made by Google:
http://www.seomoz.org/google-algorithm-change
I see an update that happened on 3rd April; this could possibly explain the dip in your site traffic in the 1st week of April.
Coming to your 2nd question, how long was your site offline? Do you see any indexed items of your website in Google?
Finally, for the spiked traffic in July, do you see any organic traffic details such as the keywords etc.? It could very well be malicious code or script that could be generating false views/hits on your site.
Thanks,
Rajesh Dhawan

Self-Reffering Traffic After upgrading to Universal Analytics
Backstory: We have always had an issue with self-referring traffic but in waiting for the UA upgrade we put it on the backburner for getting fixed. We have now upgraded to UA and I was under the impression that GA would automatically exclude the domain associated with a property as a referral source. However this is not what I am seeing under my referral traffic source. With 10 websites having issues with this I need some help. Should I use the referral exclusion list? Also on a handful of our sites we have region specific URLs, I am also seeing these come in as self-referring traffic. I should also mention that about 85% of our sales are being attributed to the self-referring traffic. Here are two sites for example sake: ZootSports.com and K2snowboarding.com

How to see organic traffic only?
Im having trouble separating our organic traffic vs our PPC. When I go into Analytics>Traffic>Sources>Search>Organic, its giving me numbers that are not accurate. I believe whats happening is that its not able to distinguish our bing organic/ppc. Is using Webmaster tools Search Queries a more accurate way to determine organic search volume?

Huge Traffic Drop?
I am seeing a huge 30-40% traffic drop which started around 8-9 PM EST last night. I am compare the stats of today with last Saturday and the drop is significant. I am checking it in Google Analytics and Clicky and both report the same. The Adsense impressions drop also show the same. The rankings of my top keywords seem to be fine. I re-checked them using ranktracker for Google US, UK and others. I don't understand what has happened here. Anyone else seeing the drop? Is there a Google Panda update underway?

Standard % of nonbranded organic search traffic?
I am working on developing goals for 2012. I will be doing several SEO projects, including one on a website for study abroad programs. Currently, nonbranded organic search is 15.49% of our visits and in 2010, it was 15.02%. I am wondering if anyone has any advice or knows of a benchmark percentage that could help me set an attainable goal. Thank you!!

Traffic dropped 75% - Panda 2 Penalized?
Hello everyone, My e-commerce website traffic dropped by 75% overnight, on April 12th. The website has been around since 2003 and growing every year. Over the years gained some great placement for some competitive keywords and stayed on page 1 for some time. After the Panda update, some of our major keywords dropped from page 1 to page 10. The first Panda update had a slightly negative effect on us, by bumping up all the brand's websites (brands we carry) placing the brands in the first couple positions (giving them 2-3 first spots) pushing us down. However, the Panda 2 killed us. I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on my situation. Did anyone ever have luck or would recommend contacting Google, and asking them for advise or reasons why the site was dropped. The website in question is www.instyleswimwear.com Thanks in advance,

Abnormal Spike in Traffic- Ddos or what?
We've noticed a 100% increase in our traffic over the last three days. However, the page views have not increased proportionately. The traffic sources seemed to be dispersed naturally. Could this be a Ddos in the making or some other type of attack as it seems unlikely that we suddenly started receiving thousands of extra visitors. Its a leading news website with a consistent heavy traffic daily which just doubled over the last three days. What should we be looking at?
