Newish site dropped out of rankings - is this normal?
-
I've got a small, 3 month old site that was ranking for a few low-competition keywords. Then, yesterday, it dropped out of the rankings almost completely. The only way to find it is to google the URL/site name, and then it does come up. There are pages in the index, they're just not ranking like they did two days ago. I'm not doing anything black hat or even slightly shady - just writing articles and clean link building.
Is this a normal part of the Google process? I've never seen it happen on any other sites I've been involved with.
-
Anything change in the past week?
-
Thanks - sounds like you found it. Since the last OSE update, I've been getting quite a few more links, all from relevant sites, but they're from small, low authority sites and a handful of big on-topic message boards (none are astroturfed- they're legit links).
That's what's so frustrating - as the content and backlinks were increasing, google traffic was as well - quite predictably, in fact. And it seemed like good legit traffic. Then bam - nothing.
Hopefully it will clean up soon.

Check in Open Site Explorer. If I guess your site correctly, it looks like you have only five linking root domains, and one of those is a site-wide footer link from an unrelated site. More links from on-topic sites would certainly help. With OSE, you can add in a competitor's URL and look at their backlinks and find good places to start your link building campaign.
Again, if I guess your site correctly, it does look like a nice site, good content that hasn't been scraped elsewhere, etc. I don't see anything headsmackingly obvious there.
And as a side note, I sympathize with you on the gun laws. Our business involves RC warships that shoot BBs and ball bearings at each other, and there are many countries that just can't be involved in our sport.
-
It's an online magazine/blog sort of site (not on a blog platform, but same sort of content). All original content (articles of about 700 words, plus some downloadable pdfs) related to the shooting sports industry. Vistors would be predominantly from the US, plus a smattering from New Zealand, Austrailia, and western Europe. Most any traffic form a part of the world without liberal gun laws would be suspect. Going on two days now with no ranking. No messages on Webmaster tools.
The only other thing I can think of is that there are a handful of Amazon affiliate links on the site, but nothing major. Literally about 3 links on the entire site.
I am hosting DNS on Cloudflare, but other sites I have hosted there have not been hit like this.
I'm hoping this is just a blip that will be corrected soon, but I want to make sure I'm not missing something obvious.

On Monday Google announced they're taking the Panda update to English-language Google searchers worldwide, not just in the US, and that they've also made other updates that affect about 2% of US queries. http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2011/04/high-quality-sites-algorithm-goes.html
New sites can fluctuate, usually getting an initial boost then settling out a bit. In your case, launching right before a couple of major algorithm changes may have made for even more fun.
Can you give us any details about your site? If not the URL, can you give us location of the site and type of site? Is it a forum? A blog? A small business? Original content? User reviews? etc.
Have you looked in Google Webmaster Tools to see if there are any messages or information for you there?
-
This is just Google likely testing the site, you may have heard of the term "Google Dance" this is likely what it is, but also, Google tests their SERPs immensely, so you may just be wrapped up in the test. Hopefully you don't get the shaft. I'd say, just wait a few days and see what happens.

Does traffic for branded searches help a site rank for general terms?
A year or two ago we put up some websites which were specific to brands we own. Sure enough those sites (eg 'myBrand.com') started to rank pretty well for those brand terms eg 'mybrand curling tongs' (it's not curling tongs, btw, but you get the idea). We were getting a decent amount of traffic presumably from people who have bought or seen these products on our amazon/ebay stores. Before long, we see us starting to rank well for non branded searches eg 'curling tongs' even among decent competition. Next thing you know I'm getting told by the boss that we need to put up websites for all specific ranges, not just brands, because specificity is a bonus for ranking well. While there's probably a point that a site for MybrandCurlingTongs lends itself well to ranking for curling tongs, is there also an element that the branded searches we got (via making our brand known on amazon/ebay) helped the site gain recognition and authority? As such a new website about 'ionising hair dryers' would not rank well based on being specific, because it wouldn't be helped by a lot of branded traffic?

Having problem with multiple ccTLD sites, SERP showing different sites on different region
Hi everyone, We have more than 20 websites for different region and all the sites have their specific ccTLD. The thing is we are having conflict in SERP for our English sites and almost all the English sites have the same content I would say 70% of the content is duplicating. Despite having a proper hreflang, I see co.uk results in (Google US) and not only .co.uk but also other sites are showing up (xyz.in, xyz.ie, xyz.com.au)The tags I'm using are below, if the site is for the US I'm using canonical and hreflang tag :https://www.xyz.us/" />https://www.xyz.us/" hreflang="en-us" />and for the UK siteshttps://www.xyz.co.uk/" />https://www.xyz.co.uk/" hreflang="en-gb" />I know we have ccTLD so we don't have to use hreflang but since we have duplicate content so just to be safe we added hreflang and what I have heard/read that there is no harm if you have hreflang (of course If implemented properly).Am I doing something wrong here? Or is it conflicting due to canonicals for the same content on different regions and we are confusing Google so (Google showing the most authoritative and relevant results)Really need help with this. Thanks,

Google favoring old site over new site...
Hi, I started a new site for a client: www.berenjifamilylaw.com. His old site: www.bestfamilylawattorney.com was too loaded up with bad links. Here's the weird part: when you Google: "Los Angeles divorce lawyer" you see the old site come up on the 21st page, but Google doesn't even show the new site (even though it is indexed). It's been about 2 weeks now and no change. Has anyone experienced something like this? If so, what did you do (if anything). Also, I did NOT do a 301 redirect from old to new b/c of spammy links. Thanks.

Better SEO Option, 1 Site 3 Subdomains or 4 Separate Sites?
Hey Mozzers, I'm working with a client who wants to redo their web presence. They have a a main website for the umbrella and then 3 divisions which have their own website as well. My question is: Is it better to have the main site on the main domain and then have the 3 separate sites be subdomains? Or 4 different domains with a linking structure to tie them all together? To my understanding option 1 would include high traffic for 1 domain and option 2 would be building Page Authority by having 4 different sites linking to each other? My guess would be option 2, only if all 4 sites start getting relevant authority to make the links of value. But right out of the gates option 1 might be more beneficial. A little advice/clarification would be great!

Massive drop in organic rankings - but strange issues
Hi guys, We experienced a massive drop in organic rankings on Saturday 29 October, a drop of around 80%.

I have received no notifications in webmaster tools
The site still ranks for its name so we are not banned
The site has been around since 2007
My mozrank and trustrank are very high (higher than sites that now still rank while we don't)
The strange this is the homepage doesn't rank for the main keyword (which it always did), but now a deeper page ranks for the main keyword, albeit on page 4.
Quite a few of our sites were affected, even though they target different industries, different countries, with different hosts, different unique content, different links (for one we havent even started link building and it was getting 250 UV per day, and now 8). I am completely confused by this.
Any advice or direction would be extremely helpful. Thanks so much0 -
Affiliate Links Added and Site Dropped in only Google
My site was dropshipping a product and we switched to an affiliate offer. We had three 4 links to different affiliate products. Our site dropped the next day. I have been number 1 for 6 months, has a pr 6 and is 2 years old. It has been 2 weeks and the site hasn't jumped back. Any suggestions on how to handle this?
