Redirect link from a particular domain
-
Hi guys/gals,
I have a few domains and blogs which I use really for a bit of fun and experimenting. One of the domains (abc.com) wasn't doing much but has a few decent links built to it. I redirected this domain to an active blog (123.com).
Here's the problem: There's a particular external link to the homepage of abc.com which drives a lot of traffic but isn't relevant to the content of 123.com which it redirects to, causing a huge bounce rate from this link.
Is there a way (maybe using using htaccess) that I can redirect traffic from this one link to another domain completely?
I've contacted the owner of the external site but they are unable (or unwilling) to change the link.
I hope I haven't lost you all but shout if you need any clarification.
Thanks in advance!

Yeah I got lost as to what you were trying to do man. Good that you figured it out!

Actually, it seems it is possible. There's a great thread on the topic on Webmaster World but essentially the code required is below. I added this to the .htaccess file of 123.com which did the trick! Now all traffic from abc.com redirects to 123.com except traffic from this one referring site which goes to the third party site.
RewriteEngine onRewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^https?://([^.]+.)refering-site.comRewriteRule (.) http://www.third-party-site.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Hi, Thanks for your answer. Your example of the scenario is exactly correct. The issue is content based rather than speed. I'm trying to redirect the visitor to a third party site which gives them exactly what they're looking for. This article was the only one on the old site which had any value so it's not worth restoring. Do you know how I can redirect visitors from this link only to the third party site? Thanks again, Brendan.

May need clarification, but are you saying..
you have site abc.com redirecting to site 123.com? Also, site abc.com has a really nice link pointing to it which gets lots of visits.
Since the content on site abc.com is different than the content on site 123.com. The link is related to talking about letters.. but instead you point them to the domain that try's to sell them numbers.. then yes you will naturally have a bad bounce rate. Especially if your redirect is a slow process, people will notice you are making them go to different websites.
You could redirect the traffic from site abc.com to another domain using .htaccess, honestly I would restore your site abc.com and give the visitors what they are looking for!
If I have this mixed up, let me know! and I'll try to re answer. But if I did answer your question, please mark it answered

Linking to my Site so I should Link Back?
I remember hearing a few years ago that it was a good practice to link back to a site that was linking to you. My company's site was referenced and linked to in a news article. The news company has an above average domain authority, which is pretty good for my company's backlink profile. Is it still or was ever a "best practice" to link back to this website/domain? I feel like linking back was a best practice, but when I try to search this, all I get back is backlinking 101 and backlinking articles. Nothing really answering my question straight forward. Thanks for any help.

Redirecting .edu subdomains to our site or taking the link, what's more valuable?
We have a relationship built through a service we offer to universities to be issued a .edu subdomain that we could redirect to our landing page relevant to that school. The other option is having a link from their website to that same page. My first question is, what would be more valuable? Can you pass domain authority by redirecting a subdomain to a subdirectory in my root domain? Or would simply passing the link equity from a page in their root domain to our page pass enough value? My second question is, if creating a subdomain with a redirect is much more valuable, what is the best process for this? Would we simply have their webmaster create the subdomain for us an have them put a 301 redirect to our page? Is this getting in the greyer hat area? Thanks guys!

We have 302 redirect links on our forum that point to individual posts. Should we add a rel="nofollow" to these links?
Moz is showing us that we have a HUGE amount of 302 redirects. These are coming from our community forum. Forum URL: https://www.foodbloggerpro.com/community/ Example thread URL: https://www.foodbloggerpro.com/community/viewthread/322/ Example URL that points to a specific reply: https://www.foodbloggerpro.com/community/viewreply/1582/ The above link 302 redirects to this URL: https://www.foodbloggerpro.com/community/viewthread/322/#1582 My two questions would be: Do you think we should we add rel=nofollow to the specific reply URLs? If possible, should we make those redirects 301 vs. 302? Screencast attached. nofollow_302.mp4

Does Domain Mapping Leak Link Juice?
Hi everyone As per previous posts, we are in the process of setting up a new sideline to the business and after taking great advice from you guys, we have bought a new domain - which is fuelsos.co.uk - To save on hosting fees, I have created a subdirectory on our main site at http://lockcity.co.uk/fuelsos/ which is in the process of being mapped to fuelsos.co.uk (will take affect in next 24hrs) My question is, am I leaking link juice from my main site doing this? or should I look at buying seperate hosting? Many thanks, Abi

Geo-Redirection
Our client has two almost identical sites targeting: Australia (www.mysite.com.au) Rest of World (www.mysite.com) Currently they have splash page on www.mysite.com asking users to select: Australia Rest of World (redirects to: www.mysite.com/home) I'm thinking they should get rid of slash page and simply auto detect if user on www.mysite.com is based in Australia and serve a message "Do you want to visit our .com.au site. It's not helped by the fact the .com site appears to get served ahead of .com.au iin australia as both sites are hosted in US. Looking to change this! Thanks in advance for your help!

Image Link
If I have an image that is well optimiswed for a keyword that the page it is on is ranking for but i put a no follow in the image link - is this going to lose the value of the image on that page. A strange question i know but this image i have on my homepage is optimised around a keyword, the image is also a link but when i changed the link in the image to no follow i seem to have dropped rankings for that keyword. Probably consicidence but i thought i would throw this question out there and get some views?

Is this a good link?
Found a .gov link to my website www.kars4kids.org. The url it links to is http://www.nyc.gov/cgi-bin/exit.pl?url=http://www.kars4kids.org/ which does eventually redirect to kars4kids. Will search engines see this as a link?

Switch domain from one account to another at domain registrar
We need to move our domain from one account to another at our domain registrar (which is Moniker). Both the "from" account and "to" account will be at Moniker. The "from" account currently has privacy settings enabled and we'd also put these in place for the "to" account. Has anyone done this and see any impact on SEO? Is there any big or common mistakes that I should be aware of? Thanks all!
