301 re-directs to similar content, good idea?
-
We need to remove about 50 articles from our site, and we can find similar content to re-direct these to.
Would it be a good or bad idea to re-direct this content? Or should we just 404 it?
Should a 301 re-direct always be an exact match?
-
first a 301 redirect is only going to help if you have links pointing to the page, if not then I would 404. if you 301, remeber that the page you redirect to, does not have to be relevant to the old page, but needs to be relevant to the link text and the page the link is comming from.
so link text, linking page and linked page should be relevant, the old page no longer counts for anything,

The 301 has already been answered and I agree.
As to the "Should a re-direct always be an exact match?" If you are speaking of keyword to keyword, url to url (DomainA.com/this-url to DomainB.com/this-url), etc. I don't think so. I have certain sites we handle for clients that over a couple of years are not as necessary. Similar vertical but not exact at all. Think Jelly Beans to Gum Drops. We have taken jelly bean pages and redirected to gumdrop with a nice positive effect. So long as you are ball park with content, I think you should go for it.
A cautionary is that I would not take say a muffler site that is closed and redirect it to a daycare facility, etc.
Hope it helps,

If you can 301 to similar content, that is the best option, for users and search engines.

It's always better to redirect rather than 404. I would suggest a redirect.

To 301 or not to 301?
So, to cut a long story short, on our website we have a /product page that is very similar to our homepage and doesn't really serve much of a purpose. It doesn't really fit in with the rest of the website and our directors want to get rid of it and focus our efforts on our homepage. Problem is, the /product page has a little bit of PA and links to other important pages on the website. I personally don't want to completely cut this page off. Would a 301 redirect to the homepage be a good option or would I be better off redirecting users to our course library page (Our course pages are what bring in most of our organic traffic)? Any help or other suggestions would be appreciated here! http://www.ihasco.co.uk/

Trackback URLs & temporary re-directs
Hi Community, I have receiving an increasing number of temporary re-direct status codes via MOZ crawl diagnostics. I have taken a look more closely and these URLs are 'trackback urls' from blog posts, the website is Wordpress integrated. What is best practice for these 302 temporary redirects? I have read that best practice for a 302 is to 301 re-direct a URL, but is this the case for a trackback URL?

Existing content & 301 redirects
Hi All, I will try to keep this to the point. One of our websites was hit by penguin for unnatural linking. We are building a new site (same business, different domain), but we would like to take some of the pages/content off the old website and use it on our new site. Is it just a case of copying each page onto our new site and 301 redirect the old URL? Or should I just be completely rewording/recreating the old content so it is unique? Any help on this would be great, but I am also open to alternate methods too. Thanks Lewis

When to re-submit for reconsideration?
Hi! We received a manual penalty notice. We had an SEO company a couple of years ago build some links for us on blogs. Currently we have only about 95 of these links which are pretty easily identifiable by the anchor text used and the blogs or directories they originate from. So far, we have seen about 35 of those removed and have made 2 contacts to each one via removeem.com. So, how many contacts do you think need to be made before submitting a reconsideration request? Is 2 enough? Also, should we use the disavow tool on these remaining 65 links? Every one of the remaining links is from either a filipino blog page or a random article directory. Finally, do you think we are still getting juice from these links? i.e. if we do remove or disavow these anchor text links are we actually going to see a negative impact? Thanks for your help and answers!! Craig

Duplicate page content
Hello, My site is being checked for errors by the PRO dashboard thing you get here and some odd duplicate content errors have appeared. Every page has a duplicate because you can see the page and the page/~username so... www.short-hairstyles.com is the same as www.short-hairstyles.com/~wwwshor I don't know if this is a problem or how the crawler found this (i'm sure I have never linked to it). But I'd like to know how to prevent it in case it is a problem if anyone knows please? Ian

¿Is a good idea to have in the same hosting (disck space) two diferent domains?
Hello. I'm talking about Google Spain. I have two domains allocated in the same site. One, including the keyword selected for the domain The other is the branding name. In this way, my client can print the branding name in their cards. But for us is easier to get rankings and (I think) quickly also. In this way, what I hope, is that if someone is looking for the service in Google, the domain with the keyword appears. But the site can also be accesed by the branding domain (which is shorter and more friendly.

Duplicate Page Titles and Content
I have a site that has a lot of contact modules. So basically each section/page has a contact person and when you click the contact button it brings up a new window with form to submit and then ends with a thank you page. All of the contact and thank you pages are showing up as duplicate page titles and content. Is this something that needs to be fixed even if I am not using them to target keywords?

Recently revamped site structure - now not even ranking for brand name, but lots of content - what happened? (Yup, the site has been crawled a few times since) Any ideas? Did I make a classic mistake? Any advise appreciated :)
I've completely disappeared off Google - what happened? Even my brand name keyword does not bring up my website - I feel lost, confused and baffled on what my next steps should be. ANY advice would be welcome, since there's no going back to the way the site was set up.
