SIte Redesign - Disaster for Organic Traffic
-
A client just redesigned their site and launched it around May 30. The organic traffic has had a MAJOR drop and has not returned yet. All of the old pages have been 301 redirected to the new pages. Any thoughts on what could be causing this to www.brickhousesecurity.com?
In Google Webmaster Tools, before the redesign we were receiving about 300,000 impressions and 10-12,000 clicks. Now the impressions are only 100,000 with half as many clicks.
Thanks!

You'll also want to check whether you have fewer pages indexed now than before the redesign. if you have significantly fewer pages, you'll have lost a lot of long-tail search query traffic.
Check out what search terms brought traffic before, and to what page, compared to after the redesign as well.

You can use the analytics to tell where the traffic drops are coming from but I think that you need to get to why Google or some other search engine traffic is dropping. So I totally agree with what EGOL mentions, but I think you already have a global grasp that traffic has dropped. Here are what I would suggest are next steps to then fix the issues of why the traffic has dropped.
Odds are is that technically you may have a problem going on.
Go through your GWT reports for crawl errors and HTML optimization etc. We relaunched and it gave us all kinds of clues on what to fix.
You need to double check all of your 301 paths - I bet that there are some holes. This is down and dirty detail work. I bet that they are probably not as correct as you think. Don't assume that if you test a few the rest are ok. Dont assume that the developer says that they are working that they are working. Run them through a tool to make sure that you are sending a 301 response. I had a site that was using 302 responses vs 301 (a temporary vs a permanent redirect). Verify, verify, verify.
Did you change title tags on your pages. Titles are a big signal and if you change them, you can see a drop. You can look at your traffic and ranking analysis to look at sample pages. If you did do a radical change, you may want to go back to your original title tag methods.
Run site speed tools
https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights#url=www.brickhousesecurity.com&mobile=false
See if your speed has dropped. The GWT will also show over time if your site is speeding up or slowing down. You may need to look at your server setup.
Verify the HTML
Did you setup
It looks like you may have changed a bunch of things at once and so it is hard to tell what you changed so see what was impacted. Usually in cases like this, Google is trying to figure out the changes and so it may take a while to sort out. I just gave some examples, but you need to review everything that has changed and see what the differences are. There are some things, even with a 301 redirects that are correct, if you changed the URL structure and title tags and the new site has HTML that does not validate, Google may take a while to sort it out. I had a site that we did a complete overhaul and it was 6 months before the traffic came back and that was with pretty good controls in place.
Good luck!

Here is the key for diagnosing a problem like this.
Do this assessment.....
-
where traffic was coming from before the drop
-
where traffic is coming from now
-
use 1 and 2 to determine what traffic you lost
-
go to those SERPs to see what happened
-
look at your pages to determine the cause
(If you don't have old analytics see if you can get raw logs off of server and look at them with a tool like weblogexpert - free low feature version if you don't want to pay)
The above will tell you if you had a traffic loss. However, your post complains about an impression loss. That is very different. For that use weblogexpert to determine if your problem is really an engagement loss rather than a traffic loss. If that is the case then the new design fails to connect visitors to content as well as the original design. To solve that you need better site navigation and cues that lead to deeper content.

i dunno how it is for everyone else, but the site was really slow to me. Try using different image formats instead of png's. maybe try jpg's?
we had this as a problem, made a few changes, and our site speed went up instantaneously
other thing is make sure your CSS and javascript are in external files when can be, although its usually the images and other media that are playing the major role in site speed

Gradual Increase in Domain Authority After Domain Migration But No Improvement in Organic Traffic Yet
We migrated our domain in early April and simultaneously added an SSL certificate. Everything was done by the books. All redirects implemented perfectly, very few errors. Google notified via Search Console. Despite all steps being done perfectly our domain authority dropped from 24 to 8. Organic traffic dropped from about 80 per day to about 10. Each month domain authority increases by 2 or 3. We are now back up to a DA of 16. But no improvement in organic traffic yet. At what point should organic traffic start to return? Hopefully the consistent improvement in DA is a good sign. I have been told that adding SSL and moving the domain at the same time was a very bad idea. We are starting link building next week. Hopefully that will help further. Any ideas as to when this situation will improve? Needless to say it has been awful for our business.

On-site Search - Revisited (again, *zZz*)
Howdy Moz fans! Okay so there's a mountain of information out there on the webernet about internal search results... but i'm finding some contradiction and a lot of pre-2014 stuff. Id like to hear some 2016 opinion and specifically around a couple of thoughts of my own, as well as some i've deduced from other sources. For clarity, I work on a large retail site with over 4 million products (product pages), and my predicament is thus - I want Google to be able to find and rank my product pages. Yes, I can link to a number of the best ones by creating well planned links via categorisation, silos, efficient menus etc (done), but can I utilise site search for this purpose? It was my understanding that Google bots don't/can't/won't use a search function... how could it? It's like expeciting it to find your members only area, it can't login! How can it find and index the millions of combinations of search results without typing in "XXXXL underpants" and all the other search combinations? Do I really need to robots.txt my search query parameter? How/why/when would googlebot generate that query parameter? Site Search is B.A.D - I read this everywhere I go, but is it really? I've read - "It eats up all your search quota", "search results have no content and are classed as spam", "results pages have no value" I want to find a positive SEO output to having a search function on my website, not just try and stifle Mr Googlebot. What I am trying to learn here is what the options are, and what are their outcomes? So far I have - _Robots.txt - _Remove the search pages from Google _No Index - _Allow the crawl but don't index the search pages. _No Follow - _I'm not sure this is even a valid idea, but I picked it up somewhere out there. _Just leave it alone - _Some of your search results might get ranked and bring traffic in. It appears that each and every option has it's positive and negative connotations. It'd be great to hear from this here community on their experiences in this practice.

International Site Migration
Hi guys, In the process of launching internationally ecommerce site (Magento CMS) for two different countries (Australia and US). Then later on expand to other countries like the UK, Canada, etc. The plan is for each country will have its own sub-folder e.g. www.domain.com/us, www.domain.com.au/au, www.domain.com.au/uk A lot of the content between these English based countries are the same. E.g. same product descriptions.

So in order to prevent duplication, from what I’ve read we will need to add Hreflang tags to every single page on the site? So for: Australian pages: United States pages: Just wanted to make sure this is the correct strategy (will hreflang prevent duplicate content issues?) and anything else i should be considering? Thankyou, Chris0 -
Traffic dropped suddenly
-In early January 2013, we had to switch servers after many years with the same one. We were highly ranked and getting about 8500 unique visitors per month. -We didn't notice the traffic falling because we were focussed on a major site redesign and addition that we launched in April 2013. Visits continued to fall, this time also because the company that launched it didn't double check their work and had some dead links etc. Those were all fixed by approximately June 2013.- early January 2014 we switched servers again because we were afraid the new server we moved to was perhaps ranked poorly or was possibly a spamming site before. Currently, nothing has changed. What was about 8500 unique visitors per month 18 months ago, is now about 1,000 and no leads are coming in at all.

Massive decreases in traffic
Hi i've been looking at the affects of googles algorithmic updates over the last couple years and the impact on sites/competitors i have been monitoring in the space. Two sites which surprised me, in having a dramatic decline in search traffic were: kriskris.com (over 200k visitors to around 10k) only-cookware.com (from 40k visitors at its peak to only around 1000k) (semrush traffic data attached) Both sites have great quality content and social signals. The only thing i can think of is a over-optimization of anchor text, and types of links. dnrm0Oa.png cuaLzrI.png

How do you prevent the mobile site becoming a duplicate of the full browser site?
We have a larger site with 100k+ pages, we need to create a mobile site which gets indexed in the mobile engines but I am afraid that google bot will consider these pages duplicates of the normal site pages. I know I can block it on the robots.txt but I still need it to be indexed for mobile search engines and I think google has a mobile crawler as well. Feel free to give me any other tips that I should follow while trying to optimize the mobile version. Any help would be appreciated 🙂
