Can Linking Between Your Own Sites Excessively Be a Penguin No-No?
-
I have a bunch of travel-related sites that for a long time dominated google.com.au without any intensive SEO whatsoever. Aside from solid on-page content and meta tag, I did no link building.
However, all of my sites are heavily interlinked, and I think they are linked with do follow links and lots of anchor texts. Here are a few of them:
My idea in inter-linking them was to create a kind of branded "Beautiful" nexus of sites. However, when Penguin hit -- which I believe was on April 27th -- search traffic crashed, and has crashed over and over again.
I've read that Penguin penalized over-optimization vis a vis anchor text links. I don't have a lot of inbound links like these, but they are everywhere among my sites. Is it possible that all of my text links have hurt me with Penguin?
Thanks to everyone in advance for your time and attention. I really appreciate it.

Not really. That will simply keep page rank from flowing, but it doesn't fix the root of the problem. It's not necessary to re-write everything. You just need to clean it up. For instance, instead of using:
Luxury Resorts
Deluxe Resorts
Standard Resorts
Budget ResortsYou simply have a drop down box that says "Resort Type" and then the dropdown says:
Luxury
Deluxe
Standard
BudgetThat one change alleviated 4 "resort" references. Plus it's more user friendly and easier to read. There are many consultants (like us) that can also repair your content if you don't want to do it yourself. It just needs to be natural and the way the verbiage is currently, it's viewed as keyword stuffing.
Structure the site to the user and not to Google. Your ultimate goal is a sale and your current sites are kind of tough to read because you've exerted too much energy into pushing keywords into the content. It may take a couple of days per site to scrub out, but it will be worth it in the end.

That's helpful insight, Chris. Thanks. What if we just nofollowed a bunch of those in-text links, rather than having to come up with new writing? But that be just as effective do you think?

I don't think that the drop you're seeing is a result of your inter-linking. If anything stands out more than another, it would be what the text links say. For instance, on http://www.beautifulcookislands.com/, you use the word "resort" and "resorts" over twenty times just on the home page and your navigation is even worse:
Luxury Resorts
Deluxe Resorts
Standard Resorts
Budget ResortsAnd this practice runs rampant on all of your sites. It's fine that they're a family of "beautiful" sites, but your problems are almost definitely stemming from keyword stuffing, which is also part of the Penguin updates. You wording is very unnatural and that sticks out like a sore thumb to Google. Get that under control and you should be able to recover in a few weeks or less.

Breaking up a site into multiple sites
Hi, I am working on plan to divide up mid-number DA website into multiple sites. So the current site's content will be divided up among these new sites. We can't share anything going forward because each site will be independent. The current homepage will change to just link out to the new sites and have minimal content. I am thinking the websites will take a hit in rankings but I don't know how much and how long the drop will last. I know if you redirect an entire domain to a new domain the impact is negligible but in this case I'm only redirecting parts of a site to a new domain. Say we rank #1 for "blue widget" on the current site. That page is going to be redirected to new site and new domain. How much of a drop can we expect? How hard will it be to rank for other new keywords say "purple widget" that we don't have now? How much link juice can i expect to pass from current website to new websites? Thank you in advance.

Link building… how to get high rewarding links?
Hi Guys, I have a few people whom I have built relationships up in my industry with that would like to link to my site. Is there any particular things I need to be mindful of before having them link to me? I'm just mindful of the unknown. Also, which links to use etc? Thanks in advance

Site wide links removal
A website of mine has about 4,000 backlinks of which 2,500 of them are coming from one website to the homepage and about 6 internal pages. These have been built up over about 5 years, mainly via article posts. The site was recently hit via penguin 2.0 but has only had natural links built so i'm wondering if the sitewide links are in fact the issue? The website linking to mine is an authority source within its niche but the concern is the amount of backlinks coming from this one site and if it may now be seen as having a negative impact. When ive reviewed the links from this one site via a backlink removal tool about 80% seem fine and suggestions are to remove about 20% of the backlinks. Would you keep all the sitewide backlinks or remove them?

Site wide links Concept
Hi All, All type of site wide links are bad for Google or it depends upon other factors as well? For example if you talk about GoDaddy or any other service provider company they put their links on the footer of other websites so in this condition, Google will harm their rankings or not? Also elaborate the best practices for site wide links.

Are Navigation links different to static links
We are trying to reduce the number of links on our homepage. We could remove some fly out navigation links, We rank 1st on Google for some of these links. Would removing these hurt our SEO. The links are accessible 1 level down if we remove the homepage.

Purchased new site with good SERP ranks, do I operate and build links or redirect the TLD?
I recently purchased a blog within my product category - it has many first page rankings for difficult keywords within my niche. I am wondering if it makes more sense for for me to continue to operate this blog and build links to my site and blog (blog is in wordpress) or to export the XML feed and upload the content to my blog (new site also in wordpress), at which point I would do a 301 at the Top-Level domain. Any thoughts, ideas, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Link anchor text: only useful for pages linked to directly or distributed across site?
As a SEO I understand that link anchor text for the focus keyword on the page linked to is very important, but I have a question which I can not find the answer to in any books or blogs, namely: does inbound anchor text 'carry over' to other pages in your site, like linkjuice? For instance, if I have a homepage focusing on keyword X and a subpage (with internal links to it) focusing on keyword Y. Does is then help to link to the homepage with keyword Y anchor texts? Will this keyword thematically 'flow through' the internal link structure and help the subpage's ranking? In a broader sense: will a diverse link anchor text profile to your homepage help all other pages in your domain rank thematically? Or is link anchor text just useful for the direct page that is linked to? All views and experiences are welcome! Kind regards, Joost van Vught
