Do I nee 2 sitemaps?
-
Our ecommerce software produces a sitemap.html which is very large. We also use a sitemap.xml file for Google and other main search engines. Is there any point in maintaining the sitemap.html or should we hide it?

Thanks Keri,
That's useful

There are two types of site maps. There are XML sitemaps for the search engines, and a regular page for the users.
The sitemap for the users does not need to include every page on your site. Check out how Verizon Wireless has done their sitemap. All of the sections are laid out, but there's just a link to smartphones -- not to each and every smartphone and its color variation. http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/sitemap.jsp When examining what to include on your site, remember users as well as search engines.

Mark, Thank you.
In our sitemap.xml we use priorities 1 to 0.1 averaging out at about 0.5 is there much mileage in this?

Do not maintain 2 sitemaps. But make sure you are optimizing your existing sitemap with all of the SEO value. Make sure with the ecommerce portion, that you arent losing any value by making sure you are properly indexing all of your ecommerce products in the "for google" sitemap. remember, the only thing that produces SEO value for you is the indexed sitemap.....
Cheers. Hope this helps. If so let us know.

Our sitemap is not indexed i Google even though it's successfully processed
Hi, Ours is a WP hosted website. We have submitted the XML sitemap with a WP plugin. It's been successfully processed by Google but it's not been indexed in and can't be found in SERP. How to get this indexed? Will there be any low crawling of sitemap as it's not indexed? Thanks

Still no good search results after 2 months of indexation
Hi guys, One of our website (https://www.residentiebosrand.be/) has been online for about two months. It's indexed and Google shows search results. But the website is not ranking on the keywords it's supposed to be ranking: 'residentie bosrand'. How come we still don't find the website on the first pages in the search results, while these are the main keywords on the website's URL, page, ... ? Best regards,

Only half of the sitemap is indexed
I have a website with high domain authority and high quality content and blog. I've resubmitted the sitemap half a dozen times. Search console getr half way through and then stops. Does anyone know any reason for this? I've seen the usual responses of 'google is not obligated to crawl you' but this site has been fully crawled in the past. It's very odd Does anyone have any ideas why it might stop half way - or does anyone know a testing tool that might illuminate the situation?

Will Google penalize 2 sites for targeting "like" keyword phrases?
I own (2) different websites, one an HTML site that has been live for 20 years and a ecommerce site that has been live for 7 years. We sell custom printed (branded) tents for use at trade shows and other indoor and outdoor events. While our ecomm site targets "trade show" tents our HTML site targets "event" tents. I believe that the keyword phrases are dissimilar enough that targeting "trade show tents" on one site and "event tents" on the other should not cause Google to penalize one or the other or both sites for having similar content. The content is different on both sites. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with, or opinions on, my thoughts... either way. Thanks,

Is it normal to receive 2 mails from Google?
I filed a reconsideration request that was answered in less than a week. Subsequently I was told that no manual penalty was in place but various algorithm factors might be causing my heavy drops in ranking. Then I got a second email which was even more specific. This was great, really heartening stuff and a total surprise as it was very helpful. Is it normal to receive 2 emails from Google with such clear information? I have been very pleased by the comments they have made as it has shown me that they're more customer focused than I had been led to believe by all the research I had done pre reconsideration request. Has anyone else had a clear outline of what they needed to fix and has their site subsequently rebounded post fixing?

Alternately, my site (and each page, thanks to Yoast SEO for WP) does have the rel="author" linked to Google+ for every page, which may make the sitemap entry moot, but I have not yet seen this work in that manner. If you know it does or does not work, please let me know. Please let me know if you have any better information or specific experience. Also, if I elect to edit my sitemaps (provided by Wistia.com and BitsontheRun) to include this tag, what XML Sitemap Tool might work well to add these tags properly? Seems there is lots of XML Sitemap tools, but few really address Video Sitemap options specifically. Thanks, Bill@apalytics.com www.apalytics.com0
