User Created Subdomain Help
-
Have I searched FAQ: Yes
My issue is unique because of the way our website works and I hope that someone can provide some guidance on this. Our website http://breezi.com is a website builder where users can build their own website. When users build their site it creates a sub-domain route to their created site, for example: http://mike.breezi.com. Now that I have explained how our site works here is the problem: Google Webmaster Tools and Bing Webmaster Tools are indexing ALL the user created websites under our TLD and thus it is our impression that any content created in those sub-domains can confuse the search engine to thinking that the user created website and content is relevant to _OUR _main sitehttp://breezi.com. So, what we would like to know if there is a way to let search engines know that the user created sites and content is not related to our TLD site. Thanks for any help and advise.

Subdomains generally don't pass any authority, link juice etc to the TLD, Rand did a Whiteboard Friday that briefly covered this a while ago (see http://www.seomoz.org/blog/international-seo-where-to-host-and-how-to-target-whiteboard-friday)
I am curious, if you didn't want user created sites to be associated with your TLD why didn't you set up a different domain for user created sites?
I personally think it is morally wrong to try and stop Google indexing them. So, if you don't want these associated with you or your TLD I would set up a new domain eg yourbreezi.com and 301 any sites that have been set up to the new domain and make sure that any new user sites are set up under the new domain.
In truth I'm not sure it is too much to worry about, after all Wordpress.org uses subdomains for most of its hosted blogs and it doesn't seem to have done them too much harm!!
Hope that helps

Robert,
The suggestion you make is not an option. I don't want to remove any sub-domain urls because these are user generated sites that could generate their own respective ranking.
-
Navid,
Using the Robot.txt to block the sub domains might not be the best route.
The only way I would think you can do that is by telling GWT to remove the URL (in this case your subdomains).
On Webmaster tools, click on "Site Configuration", then "Crawler access" then "Remove URL". Here click on "New Removal request". You will then see a option to remove whole site. You can use this option to remove "subdomain.domain.com" from SERP.

hmmm... That is a tricky one. One place to look for answer might be to talk to SEO people that have worked with a similar service such as Ning or wordpress.com .
I'll be curious to hear of your findings.

Create Longer Content or Separate Pages
Good Afternoon We've been helping out on a site which for instance offers Hotel Breaks in Birmingham. There is a page on the site birmingham-hotel-breaks and the most popular package that people book is actually Hotel Breaks with a Transfer package. The Birmingham Hotel page focuses mainly on the Hotel and Transfer packages but it's been suggested that we build out a separate page birmingham-hotel-and-transfer to be more keyword targeted and change the original page to focus solely on the Hotel side. I wasn't sure whether it would be better to build out the content on the existing page as people are already linking to us for the packages

Robots.txt on subdomains
Hi guys! I keep reading conflicting information on this and it's left me a little unsure. Am I right in thinking that a website with a subdomain of shop.sitetitle.com will share the same robots.txt file as the root domain?

Steady, but continous Google traffic drop. Help?
I am facing a steady, but deteriorating Google traffic drop and i am struggling to find the real reasons. The site is in the video entertainment niche. Here is some data regarding the site in general: Site redesign happened around June We are not doing a lot of off-site and link building in 2013, besides social activities and content distribution to partner sites (top links from OSE are gained long time ago) GWT crawls errors are clean (besides 404s) No manual actions from Google or penalty notifications Serious fluctuations in indexed content in June, but no real effect on traffic Removal of old content during August Top keywords are dropping (may be caused by category pages removal and flattening site structure) Robots file disallows only search-generated pages No sitemap errors or warnings 2K of duplicate meta-titles and descs Thank you and appreciate your help. wyOyoA9

Help! Pages not being indexed
Hi Mozzers, I need your help.
Technical SEO | | bshanahan
Our website (www.barnettcapitaladvisors.com) stopped being indexed in search engines following a round of major changes to URLs and content. There were a number of dead links for a few days before 301 redirects were properly put in place. And now, only 3 pages show up in bing when I do the search "site:barnettcapitaladvisors.com". A bunch of pages show up in Google for that search, but they're not any of the pages we want to show up. Our home page and most important services pages are nowhere in search results. What's going on here?
Our sitemap is at http://www.barnettcapitaladvisors.com/sites/default/files/users/AndrewCarrillo/sitemap/sitemap.xml
Robots.txt is at: http://www.barnettcapitaladvisors.com/robots.txt Thanks!0 -
Google not found errors in webmaster tool help
Hi, Google Webmaster tools sent me a few messages recently about the jump in the number of 'not found' errors. From 0 to 290 errors, ouch. I know what it's from but I think Google is seeing things. We developed another page/subdomain we're working on with links back to the root domain. Basically a complete list of articles page that lists each article and links back to the root domain. Not sure what Google is crawling but the links that would result in a 'not found' error aren't there. Will these disappear over time? Thanks for the help!

A website that will not load on a particular computer? Help Me Please!
We took on a new client about two weeks ago, took them off a proprietary CMS, placed them on a WordPress site, optimized the site, etc. and were finishing up small details three days ago. My PC in my personal office all of a sudden would not load the site from a Google search, from a direct url, etc.

Our office was using a D-Link wireless router but my PC is hardwired in the office. I cranked up my MacBook Pro with solid state drive (6 months old), got on wireless, and....site would not load. PC's and Macs in offices around me would all load the site. A search online brought up a fix for the PC and tried it - did not work, had lead dev try it - did not work, called a server side friend and he had never heard of such a thing. Every fix revolved around changing IP addresses, etc. I uninstalled my antivirus programs on my PC, installed every update that was outstanding, there was no new software installed on either box prior to problem. Can you help??? Is there any chance someone not associated with us and just looking for my client or someone entering a direct url could experience?0 -

Where to get expert SEO help?
I joined SEOmoz knowing very little about SEO (it turns out even less than I thought!) I signed up because my business website that had be ranking very well for years made a fast and furious fall to the purgatory of page 2, 3, whatever. We'll I've definitely learned a lot and made a several changes that have helped. Specifically link building (directory submissions) and eliminating duplicate content. But we're still far below where we used to be and I've done everything I can do without making a career change to SEO. I've hired a few offshore SEOs to help but they have all failed to live up to their promises. So, I would love to find a GOOD SEO that can 1. Fix the remaining on-page technical issues in our CMS website (Business Catalyst), and 2. help us develop an SEO strategy for the next year. (I prefer not to post the name of the website for competitive reasons) Our keywords are really not very competitive at all due to the uniqueness of the business. Where should I look for help? Thanks
