SEO Overly-Dynamic URL Website with thousands of URLs
-
Hello,
I have a new client who has a Diablo 3 database. They have created a very interesting site in which every "build" is it's own URL. Every page is a list of weapons and gear for the gamer. The reader may love this but it's nightmare for SEO. I have pushed for a blog to help generate inbound links and traffic but overall I feel the main feature of their site is a headache to optimize.
They have thousands of pages index in google but none are really their own page. There is no strong content, H-Tags, or any real substance at all.
With a lack of definition for each page, Google see's this as a huge ball of mess, with duplicate Page Titles and too many onpage links.
The first thing I did was tell them to add a canonical link which seemed to drop the errors down 12K leaving only 2400 left...which is a nice start, but the remaining errors is still a challenge.
I'm thinking about seeing if I can either find a way to make each page it's own blurb, H Tag or simple have the Nav bar and all the links in the database Noindex. That way the site is left with only a handful of URLs + the Blog and Forum
Thought?

You bet. Just to be clear, I was talking about pulling the content from the page in some automated fashion into the title. Finding elements from each page that should be in variables and then inserting them into the title, description and H1 in a way that you can make each page unique.
You would need to make a final call on if you think the content is unique enough. We had 5000 locations that we used data in the database to make 5000 unique pages as each location has the name of the business, city, state, zip, address phone number etc.
We are now working to have user generated content/comments/reviews on each page so that each one page becomes more unique and more useful over time.
Having a IT guy who appreciates SEO is key for this and for the URLs. I would talk first about how he organizes the data in his system and then how this translates into the URL. You can then then just have him rename the URL using the same logic.
Show him some data on click thru rates on more readable URLs and how Google prefers not to spider them. I work to educate the IT guys as much as I can without making it sound like I know it all.

Hey CleverphD,
They're isn't a strong amount of traffic to sway any decision one direction to another at this point, but I'm sure this is the bread and butter of the site. Their programmer is going to hate me, but I agree there needs to be a way to optimize and like you say maximize the long tailed details.
So you think I pulling the title is the best route? maybe add a little content...I'm not overly confident that this guy knows how to create pretty SEO-friendly URLs using the data provided, but I'll try to explain why it's important.
thx

Wow! Yep you gotta lock this one down. This needs heavy automation support. Have you looked at using the content from each build can be pulled into the title tag etc automatically? That can help diversify how the tags look. If the users love all the builds, then is there a way to use automation to help Google see this.
If you work it right, you can have an awesome opportunity for long tail search. I worked on a site that had a yellow pages type setup. We had all the pages with title tags and descriptions that pulled in city state zip location address and name of location automatically. Even changed up the order on how it was presented and had different options for filler / connective words.
Worked pretty well to show off the unique content on each page as best we could automatically. We then paid an intern to go in and optimize page by page from there starting with the most viewed pages.
It may not be that each page is not strong enough as you mention, but you also said that users love the pages so I wanted to toss that out there.

SEO Migration Options
Hi Guys, We have a www.sitename.com.au domain name and looking to move into the US market, and other markets in the future such as UK, Canada, etc. We are reviewing our options. Currently the .com.au is ccTLD to Australia so won't perform well in US. It seems the best option at this stage is to get a generic domain Generic top-level domains (gTLDs) like a .com. Then create different sub-folders for each country for example: .com our main country .com/us/ target us .com/uk/ Then in Google Search Console don't set country targeting for entire domain but use Hreflang Tags to specify the targeting for each page? -- This seems like a complex strategy to execute so i just want to check if this would be a optional option? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated! Cheers.

I have rebuilt a website on a new domain and followed SEO protocol to maintain authority, but the results and rankings are declining.
We took over an account for a company called knightdoorservices.com who specialize in doors and windows in Edmonton, Alberta. We built them a new website on a new domain: knightdoorsandwindows.com. We did 301 redirects on all of the old URLs so that they now point to the new URLs so most of the authority should transfer over. Additionally, each page has a properly optimized title, h1 tag, a series of pertinent alt tags, and many instances of the focus keyword for that particular page. Additionally, the website loads quickly and has many high authority inbound links pointing to the domain. We have done this for many other companies and have seen their rankings maintain their position or increase. Is there something that I am missing for this company in particular? Thanks so much!

Is there any SEO advantage to sharing links on twitter using google's url shortener goo.gl/
Hi is there any advantage to using <cite class="vurls">goo.gl/</cite> to shorten a URL for Twitter instead of other ones? I had a thought that <cite class="vurls">goo.gl/</cite> might allow google to track click throughs and hence judge popularity.

Forwarding Empty URLs to Homepage for SEO & Old Backlink Salvaging - Is there any value or risk?
Our company owns about 30 URLs that we aren't currently using. Is there any SEO value to be gained by forwarding these content-less URLs to our homepage if they aren't currently indexed by google? Some of these sites were previously in use at low traffic volumes by companies who licensed use of our brand and URL. After parting ways a year or longer in the past, no 301 redirection was done to save the link juice, so it's long gone at this point. However, there may be some sites on the net that are still linking to various pages on the URL. What would be the best course of action to salvage any value of these URLs until they are in use again as full websites? Insights would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, Justin

Website Is In Tables
Our website www.accupos.com is mainly created with TABLES, which I've heard is a practice from Neanderthal times. Nevertheless, it is my job as the new Dir. of Marketing to SEO the hell out of it. Would you recommend converting the ENTIRE website into Divs or changing the current Tables situation? Or is this not a big deal for SEO? The site APPEARS fine, but I want to get our keywords ranked as well as possible, putting my time in the most efficient places (like link building!). How much of a high priority might this Tables fix be? We are also running an AdWords campaign spending LOTS every month. Please Moz me! Derek

Website redesign - how do I avoid screwing up my site SEO?
We are preparing to launch a newly designed (and much improved) website in the next few months. I want to be very careful to ensure we do not mess up any rankings (and hopefully actually improve rankings) when switching over the site. I'm particularly concerned about one key phrase that our homepage currently ranks on. After the redesign it would be more appropriate for our of our subpages to rank for that term, but I'd rather have our homepage rank (less relevant for this keyword than the subpage) then nothing at all. I know about 301 redirects, and we are planning on creating a few comprehensive diagrams to ensure we redirect old pages to the correct new pages. Beyond that, what can I do to preserve our rankings? Thanks! -Ryan
