Google Algorithm Update July 30, 2012 - Anyone else notice a major drop in keyword rankings
-
From July 30th to the 31st many of my keyword rankings in Google plumited 30 spots or more. Has anyone else notice this on their site? Does anyone have any idea for the presumed penalty?
I can PM my site information if needed for further assistance. As always thank you for the assistance, and any help in this matter is greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the response. We'll just have to keep an eye open and see what changes we have this week.
Thanks for your feedback

Had some major changes to our sites. As much as 29 spots drop for three sites. More than that is that our sites are moving up and down the rankings weekly by as much as 10 spots. Sites that were built more than 3 years ago are suffering the most.
Need to get some stability back into our rankings. Any advice for the immediate future would be much appreciated.
We are in South Africa.

You can check out the other thread I mentioned, and SeoMoz has a new feature available MozCast which allows you to view the Google Algorithm flux graphically (very basic at the moment, but definitely something nice to assuage your fears/insanity haha).

Dr. Pete provides some insight into the issue on a similar question found here: http://www.seomoz.org/q/mozcast-com-what-happened-on-the-27th-hottest-day-of-the-month . But basically everyone is still investigating and no one is exactly sure yet it seems. I'm sure more people will begin to notice an issue as their weekly rankings roll out. Hopefully we will all be able to figure it out and rebound, because we have seemingly been doing everything right thus far, just as you've stated Chad.

I noticed my UK site increased drastically in rankings. Both my Canadian and US sites didn't see much of a change, nothing out of the ordinary… up and down a few spots like usual.

I feel a lot better reading this. I've had a few just disappear. We had keywords that rank #2 and just are gone. We don't have any warnings, we have tons of unique content(updated constantly)clean links. Traffic dropped. We do everything by the book and have a very thought out plan including press releases, croos posting on social, blogging, guest blogging ,etc. I noticed hayneedle.com filled page after page of poor quality page links for each of these keywords and amazon pages promoting their site. I'm losing my mind but our domain authority increased etc. hopefully this is just a bump in the road. Love any help for anyone wwww.thegardengates.com

Not in the UK, and we have never had any warnings in GWT. I read somewhere about a US update on the 24th but have no data to confirm/deny. Definitely something happened though because we had about 30 keywords plummet from page 1 to 3-4 overnight. And our Bing SERP rankings have remained the same.

Are you by chance in the UK? SERoundtable announced a possible Penguin refresh this week in the UK. But, I haven't seen anything else that supports this.
Do you have any warnings in your webmaster tools?

Multiple domains and many keywords. There's another user with a similar question with the change happening on the 28th: http://www.seomoz.org/q/mozcast-com-what-happened-on-the-27th-hottest-day-of-the-month

Hi, I did not see any major changes around this date. Was it across different URLs as well as keywords or was it a single URL?
-
I did not notice any noticeable change across any of my sites. But it may take a few days to notice. Good luck.

Bing Algo Updates?
I am of the belief it is bad to be "too" Google-centric. Many people have found that out with Panda, Penguin and Venice in recent years - all eggs in one basket and after one update you are out for the count (if you we're naughty of course). Anyway, That aside I enjoy looking at are reminding myself about Google Algo Updates using the SEOMoz Google Change Log (a bit like Gina Tripani's change log on This Week in Google, but only more Algo focused) - http://www.seomoz.org/google-algorithm-change So, my question - is there a version of Bing somewhere out there?

Does anyone know why some keyword rankings go from nowhere in the top 50 to ranking 1st to then nowhere in the top 50 in the space of 3 weeks?
SEOMOZ told me to ask the question here because they say their ranking programme now works correctly and the problems I was having before with keywords changing so dramatically, even though nothing had been changed with regards to optmisation, is now to do with google rather than their ranking tool do google really change their algorithms on a weekly basis so that rankings can go up by more than 50 to ranking 1st to then going down by more than 50? Any hints or tips from anyone on I can keep the rankings more consistent (maybe dropping or increasing by one or two places week by week rather than changing by over 50 positions?)

Keyword ranking tool
Hello, What is best practice for knowing if a keyword is too difficult to try to rank for. i understand the keyword difficulty tool in seoMOZ, but am unsure of how it actually relates to if I should attempt to rank for the keyword. Is there a differential people use such as if a site has a Page Authority of 60 we will not try to rank for a keyword that has a keyword difficulty ranking of 40?

How does SEOMoz get ranking data? is it automated queries to Google?
Google's terms don't allow automated queries without Google's permission. https://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66357 How does SEOMoz get ranking data then? Is it sending automated queries with or without Google's permission? is it violating Google's guideline? Will it affect my site performance as far as rankings?

Using MOZ Keyword Rankings with Google Analytics in Excel to track paid keywords
Hi, I sorted my keywords in GA from highest incoming traffic to lowest, exported it and then imported these 280 or something keywords into SEO Moz. The problem is, it appears that SEO Moz Keyword Rankings tool pulls traffic data (in the traffic column) only for NON-PAID traffic ... So what I'm seeing is that keywords that brings A LOT of traffic to my site (because of AdWords) sometimes have 0 of traffic in SEO Moz, because I'm on page 3 of SERP and I literally got no non-paid traffic that week. The thing is: I want to improve my rankings for keywords that I'm already performing well, even if they are paid keywords, because they already bring me a lot of traffic to my website. The way this is working is not helping me out, because when I sort by the traffic column very important keywords end up in the last place for me. Questions: Whey does SEO Moz pull traffic data from non-paid keywords only ? Shouldn't be at least an option for this or I'm missing something here ? While they don't change it, any Excel Gurus could help me how to export SEO Moz ranking data, import it on Excel and MERGE a new "paid traffic" column that I export from Google Analytics ? How to assing each keyword line the paid traffic value I'm getting from GA ? Thanks ! Felipe

Campaign Manager - Keyword Grouping
Hey, I was just thinking that it would be useful to be able to group keywords by page or some other factor in the campaign monitor keyword rank checking tool (I am sure it's called something better than that). Maybe it's just me, but I am struggling a little with this for relatively smaller sites so if I could tag each keyword and filter / group them by the tag it would be another useful tool for my seo utility belt. Fairly painless to implement as well I would imagine. 1. Create tags 2. assign tags to keywords with a drop down (optional) Would be a useful tool when exporting data to group by tag etc. Just a thought. 🙂 Marcus

Keyword Update More Frequent?
I think it's extremely important to be aware of any change in ranking ASAP is there any way to have SEOMOZ Pro update more often than once a week?
