What is the impact of excessive code on rankings
-
I am working on optimizing a page that utilizes a template that generates an excessive amount of code - 4 to 5 times what I am seeing with competitor pages. The entire site seems to have this problem and we have, according to webmaster tools a a medium to slow load time.
In general, given the content and teh strength of the domain, I think this page should be performing better. I think the entire site should be performing better. Would it be worth it to replace the template I am using and replace it with a more lightweight page design? I would obviously keep the content and the url the same.
Typically I want to try everything I can to improve rankings, but this change would take some time, so I don;t want to rush into it.
Looking for some answers based on experience, not general best practices. Thanks

Thanks...would you say this page has too much code?

Page speed is a factor in rankings. You have to have it as a systematic part of how your developer thinks and how the rest of your team thinks when setting up features. Easier said that done, but worth the long term effort.
The adage, "when you measure it, you can improve it" is key with developers. Either let them see the GWT numbers or setup something like New Relic reporting or some other tool.
The page speed on one of our sites was increasing and then I was also noticing some 500 errors in GWT. I had our IT guy drill down and figure it out. It was a caching issue that each time a page loaded, a full database query would run vs running off the cache. Sometimes it would be enough that a page would not load. It was intermittent. He fixed it and look at how our page speed improved (see attached).
This was in the last part of May, first part of June. We had a great July (despite a slow first week with the holiday) due to improvements in organic ranking. Our improvement in speed was a part of this.
One more on this. I find the GWT Labs Speed tool can suck. It does not seem to sample very many pages. Also, in one site we had, it focused on the site search page and of course that is slower than the rest of the site so it was inflated. I like the Health Crawl Stats (that is where the screen shot is from). Then I can use other tools to test on a page by page basis.
Cheers.

How to rank a product page
Hello, I have a product page and just did a little introduction ( 5 lines of text) but I have the feeling this is not enough for google. What is the solution ? Is it to increase the amount of content even though it is not going to be user friendly ? Or will google look at the product page I link too and take into account the content on those subpages to boost my "pillar / product page". Thank you,

Rankings drastically changing
I monitor our positions for a few keywords but they are very unstable. One day they will be at position 1, 2 or 3 and then all of a sudden not even on Google. We use an IP redirect to guide users to the correct site and I suspect this may be a cause. Could anybody shed some light? Thanks

Google Flux in Rankings Or Something More Serious
Hi all, Two weeks ago i noticed that one of our pages which normally ranks in the top 5 of search results dropped out of the top 50 results. I checked to make sure there were no Google penalties and checked to make sure the page was crawlable. Everything seemed fine and after a few hours our page went back into the number one position. I assumed it was a Google Flux. This number one ranking lasted about a week, today I see my page has dropped out of the top 50 yet again and hasn't come back up. again there are no penalties and there doesn't seem to be issues with the page. I'm hoping it comes back up to the top by tomorrow. What could be causing such a big dip multiple times?

Page Rank
Hi guys I have an ecommerce in prestashop (unfortunatelly I can not change it at this moment). I made all main activities both off and on the page. And actually it is working pretty well since I am up on the SERP for all the target keywords. BUT, the page rank still be 0. The site is about 2 years old. My main competitor has the same domain authority than mine, but he has a page rank > 0 Moreover I have more quality links then it has, but it is older Any suggestions? Many thanks Ciao Diego

What is the time of impact of a link regarding to rankings?
I own a website in a pretty semi-competitive market (220 000 searches a month for my main keyword). I've been doing some intensive linkbuilding with some good results. I got around 10 links from organisations, schools and websites of city halls, all of them, the pages being at least pagerank 3 or 4. I let some time pass inbetween, to let Google craw the pages I got the links from and most of them also start to appear in my GWT. The thing is, my rankings havn't improved anything, they are doing quite some Google dancing, staying around position 50. I got the links about 2 months ago (April). When checking other websites in my market, they all have fewer links and mostly low quality. My website itself is also pretty good, all unique content, updated pretty often, around 100 pages of content. All on-site SEO is done as it should be. Am I just being impatient? Or should i start digging deeper?

What, on average, is the 'impact time' of decent links on your rankings in a semi-competitive market?? Thanks!0 -
Sudden drop in page rank
Hi One of our client websites has had a sudden drop in rankings, and also in page rank. We have obviously been off for 2 weeks, so havent been blogging daily etc as we normally would have. Would this cause such a drop? Some keywords have lost from position 2/3 to page 7 over night, and we havent change the strategy! Thanks,
