Declining Organic Traffic despite PR, links and engagement
-
I have a client site that launched last June and rebranded this February 2012 as http://49thshelf.com
The search traffic since Feb has been steadily declining despite some great campaigns to drive traffic and engagement.
April down 40% vs. Mar
May down 37%
Jun down 51%
Jul 16%
We have a couple of challenges. The site is the only collection of Canadian-authored titles. It's like an Amazon of only Canadian titles. But it's not ecommerce, we direct traffic to other vendors like Amazon or the publisher to buy.
We have 40,000 unique products on the site and the descriptions are primarily supplied by the publishers, which means it's the same content on the publisher site as Goodreads, Amazon and anyone else they share data with.
Those big players like Amazon and Goodreads use user generated content to alter the descriptions but we don't have that level of activity on the site. Members create reading lists, the editorial staff curate collections on the homepage and there are interviews, blog posts and guest posts.
No black hat SEO, no bad links that I can see. Great organic membership growth and interactions. Good activity from social media sites to the site. Good, trusted links from news sites and legit blogs.
I don't know what to do to improve the organic traffic. July is the first month that we haven't seen 40-50% drops.
Any advice is welcome, thank you!

Thanks Tom and Daniel! The domain authority has been steadily increasing and there are a few similar sites that I'm tracking as competitors who are providing editorial content vs just product pages plus UGC. But they don't appear to be doing anything new. I do have last summer's data when the site operated under a different domain and search traffic is significantly down in the comparable months last year. Quite flummoxed.

Tom:
Right back at you. Let me return the favour. Good thoughts from you, too.
I should reveal here that I am a former Canadian journalist and media executive who also worked in New York on the websites of Library Journal and Publishers Weekly.
My current clients include several authors and websites who publish content from leading authors and subject matter experts.
So I am not completely ignorant about books and authors and media and publishing.
That said, I am still puzzled by the issues raised in the original post.
'Tis indeed a bafflement. But I suspect the crux of the matter may be a mega/meta strategic issue, rather than a technical SEO issue.

Good thoughts Daniel,
I do not know this industry, but " perhaps" search volume is also down...... Is there any chance this is a seasonal type search based on school or holidays'?
If all placement is there as was before, perhaps you should also consider a stronger call to action in the description, and moving the site name to the BACK of the title........
best
Tom

A couple of shots in the dark:
(1) Have your Domain Authority and Mozrank remained steady? Is there any evidence that the product descriptions duplicated elsewhere are hurting you? If so, and you lack the resources to alter the descriptions, you may want to think the unthinkable: drop the descriptions and focus on what you do well -- and uniquely.
(2) Has something changed in the competitive landscape? Are your online competitors now offering features previously exclusive to you? Any other mega trends in the Canadian publishing industry (eg. sharp decline in sales?))

100 Links Warning
Our website is GarageFlooringLLC.com. We rank relatively well for our main keywords but I am always looking to rank better. The 100 links question has been discussed to no end but I believe our website provides a great example of why a small business might have more than 100 links and IF we need to drop below that. User Experience vs Rules I think it is fair to say that if customers cannot find what they are looking for, it does not matter how well you rank. Our menu is designed to get people to the page they want to be on in a single click. So What Now? Do we remove items from the menu and only link to categories adding an extra click or two to the customers UI or do we leave well enough alone

Links from a penalised site.
Hey Mozzers, Recently we have had a series of agencies in to pitch for work, one group mentioned that due to our association with a possibly penalised product review website, any links and activity associated with the brand would hinder our SEO. We currently have a good rating, but we are now no longer pushing our customers to the site as we move to a new platform. The current link back from this website is also no-followed. Any thoughts on how this could impact us? And how the agencies determined the site was penalised and causing us problems. Cheers Tim

Natural Fluctuation in Search Traffic
This is going to sound like a weird question... I'm curious to know whether there is a natural fluctuation in the actual number of searches being made online each week. It would be great to relate this to the performance of my own organic traffic each week. For example, if organic search traffic is down 10% week on week, is that because search in general is down 10%? Has anybody ever looking into this?

Traffic and keyword drop
Hello, On one of the sites that I manage - http://www.zalikihotel.gr/ , there was a significant decrease in keyword positions over the last 10-15 days. Sample screenshot is attached. Some of the keywords even dropped for 17-18 positions. From the end of April, organic traffic dropped by 30 percent. Website is mobile optimized, so that shouldn't be a problem. In the last 3-4 months, we had traffic increase. Domain authority went up by 3 points after the last index. On-site SEO was completed, and currently I'm focusing on link-building and working on bringing back to life forgotten social media. Does anybody knows what might be the case for this negative affects on our site? Do you think it's a temporary fluctuation or not? Thanks in advance. 8dSBELm.png?1

Problem with internal links
Hello! Our domain, http://www.unionroom.com/, is having a strange issue with OSE in that it is telling us our internal pages aren't linking to one another. An example of this is that it is showing our About page ( http://www.unionroom.com/about/ ) only having three links, but this link appears twice on every single page on the website (~200 pages) in the header and footer. We've hung around for a little while to see if OSE would correct itself, but it hasn't and this now suggests that it may be an issue with our in-linking structure. Can anyone spot any issues with our build? The rest of the websites that we produce, that are all built in the same way, all have healthy internal linking structures according to OSE. Very confusing! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Traffic dropped suddenly
-In early January 2013, we had to switch servers after many years with the same one. We were highly ranked and getting about 8500 unique visitors per month. -We didn't notice the traffic falling because we were focussed on a major site redesign and addition that we launched in April 2013. Visits continued to fall, this time also because the company that launched it didn't double check their work and had some dead links etc. Those were all fixed by approximately June 2013.- early January 2014 we switched servers again because we were afraid the new server we moved to was perhaps ranked poorly or was possibly a spamming site before. Currently, nothing has changed. What was about 8500 unique visitors per month 18 months ago, is now about 1,000 and no leads are coming in at all.

SIte Redesign - Disaster for Organic Traffic
A client just redesigned their site and launched it around May 30. The organic traffic has had a MAJOR drop and has not returned yet. All of the old pages have been 301 redirected to the new pages. Any thoughts on what could be causing this to www.brickhousesecurity.com? In Google Webmaster Tools, before the redesign we were receiving about 300,000 impressions and 10-12,000 clicks. Now the impressions are only 100,000 with half as many clicks. Thanks!
