Alternatives to SEOmoz's Crawl Diagnistics
-
I really like SEOmoz's Crawl diagnostics reports, it goes through the pages and finds all sorts of valuable information, I wanted to know if there are any other services that compete against this specific service, to test the accuracy of their crawl diagnistics.
Thanks

Google Webmaster Tools is handy to use in conjunction with the other tools listed.
Also, SEO Powersuite's SEO Spyglass tool is pretty decent.

I agree with Irving as well. Dr. Pete wrote a great comparison of the two: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/crawler-faceoff-xenu-vs-screaming-frog
In brief, Xenu is free. It is old but it works. If you were around before Windows and don't mind using older tech, then Xenu is great.
Screaming Frog costs about $99 Euros but it is much more user friendly. They have an excellent support staff as well. I use the tool almost daily.

Xenu's Link Sleuth is very helpful in finding link issues

I like Screaming Frog

Generation 'child' sitemaps?
First off, am I correct in thinking that a 'child' sitemap is a sitemap of a subfolder and everything that sits under it, i.e. www.example.com/example If so, can someone give me a good recommendation for generation a free child sitemap please? Many thanks, Rhys

Microsoft IIS SEO tool claims I have no H1... It's not true.
I have 4300 pages that the tool claims are missing the H1 value but they are there. Here is an example: http://antiquebanknotes.com/rare-currency/first-national-bank-atlanta-illinois-2283.aspx/ Has anyone seen this before?

How do you 'close down' a website?
Hello all, If a company acquires a smaller company and 'absorbs' its products and services into its own website, what is the protocol with closing down the smaller company's site? So far we added our branding to the site alerting their visitors to the imminent takeover, and 301 redirected certain pages - soon we'll be redirecting all the pages to their counterparts on the main website. Once that's done, should we noindex the old site? Anything else? Thanks, Caro

How to properly change your website's address in Webmaster Tools?
Hi There,We've launched a new website and as part of the update have changed our domain name - now we need to tell Google of the changes: Both sites were verified in Webmaster Tools From the old site's gear icon, we chose "Change of address" As part of the "Change of address" checklist Google presented, we added 301 redirects to redirect the old domain to the new one But now that the 301 redirects are in place, Google can no longer verify the old site And because it can no longer verify the old site, Google won't let us complete the change of address form How do we tell Google of the change of address in this instance - and has anyone else encountered this?CheersBen

Should I noindex my blog's tag, category, and author pages
Hi there, Is it a good idea to no index tag, category, and author pages on blogs? The tag pages sometimes have duplicate content. And the category and author pages aren't really optimized for any search term. Just curious what others think. Thanks!

GWT returning 200 for robots.txt, but it's actually returning a 404?
Hi, Just wondering if anyone has had this problem before. I'm just checking a client's GWT and I'm looking at their robots.txt file. In GWT, it's saying that it's all fine and returns a 200 code, but when I manually visit (or click the link in GWT) the page, it gives me a 404 error. As far as I can tell, the client has made no changes to the robots.txt recently, and we definitely haven't either. Has anyone had this problem before? Thanks!

Best practice: unique meta descriptions on blog 'tag' pages
Hi everyone, I'm curious, are there best practices for introducing unique meta descriptions on blog tag pages (I'm using wordpress)? For instance, using platinum seo, on an original post, the meta description is either the excerpt or a specified custom sentence. It doesn't appear that platinum seo allows for custom descriptions on tag pages. Love to hear your thoughts. Thanks! Peter

At what point is the canonical tag crawled
Do search engines (specifically Google) crawl the url in the canonical tag as it loads or do they load the whole page before crawling it? Thanks,
