Can I optimize two different pages with very similar keywords without hurting SEO?
-
Hi there,
I have often heard that you cannot have multiple pages rank for the same keyword. My question here is more about long tail keywords who have the same keyword phrase repeated on different pages.
For Example:
I have two webpages with different content.
I want to have one page (Homepage) rank for the more generic term such as "innovation management" and another supporting page rank for "innovation management software".
Will Google see these two different webpages as competing? Should I avoid repeating the more general term in the phrase?
Has anyone ever seen your SEO results decline when doing this? I don't believe this is duplicate content since the pages hold completely different copy and assets but I am not sure if the repeating phrase in the title tags will flag anything to the search engines.

I think it's hard to make that assumption. Maybe they're an "innovation management" company that provides services and software.
Yes, I agree that the home page can target more than one term but segmenting keywords out into hyper-relevant long tail content pages can only help. Potentially, both those pages can rank for the same term.

It depends. If you do this badly you will cause yourself problems. It may also take twice the work to make 2 different pages rank
As these 2 are so similar, I personally would get the single homepage to rank for both

The way you laid it out, this would not be a duplicate content issue and search engines would view them as two different pages. You're targeting two different terms with unique content for each page.
It's expected that some internal pages will have some compound keyword crossover with the home page.

Optimized filename management for SEO
Hi, I'm currently undertaking a project to manage better my images and to rank for image searches. My site uses mod_pagespeed to optimises images, therefore image urls are changed to a pretty seo unfriendly url or even sometimes inlined within my page. On top of that I generally resize all my images by passing the desired file dimension within the image url in order to optimise the loading time of my site. Is there a way to provide a hint to google that I have a much better quality image with higher dimensions and better name? Can i specify within my image sitemap an image that actually does have different dimensions and a different within the page it serves? Are there better tricks to achieve that? Thanks in advance

Can you be penalised in Google for excessive internal keyword linking?
I have an online shop and 3 blogs (with different topics) all set up on sub-domains (for security reasons, don't want Word Press installed in the same hosting space as my shop in case one gets hacked). I have been on the front page of Google for a keyword, lets say 'widgets' for months now. I have been writing blogs about 'widgets', probably about 1/4 of all my blog posts are linking to the 'widgets' page in my shop. I write maybe 1-2 blogs a week, so it's not excessive. This morning I have woken to fine that the widgets page in my shop has vanished from Google's index. So typing in 'widgets' brings up nothing. It hasn't dropped in the rankings, it's just vanished. A few weeks ago I ranked 3 or 4. Then I dropped to about 6. A couple of days ago, i jumped back up to 5 and now it's vanished. If you type in 'buy widgets', or 'widgets online' or 'widgets australia', I have the #1 spot for all those, but for 'widgets', I just don't exist anymore. Could I have been penalised for writing too many posts and keyword linking internally? They're not keyword stuffed and they're well written. I just don't understand what's happened. Right now I"m freaking out about blogging and putting internal links on my website.

Canonical tag for Home page: with or without / at the end???
Setting up canonical tags for an old site. I really need advice on that darn backslash / at the end of the homepage URL. We have incoming links to the homepage as http://www.mysite.com (without the backslash), and as http://www.mysite.com/ (with the backslash), and as http://www.mysite.com/index.html I know that there should be 301 redirects to just one version, but I need to know more about the canonical tags... Which should the canonical tag be??? (without the backslash) or (with the backslash) Thanks for your help! 🙂

I own mutiple exact keyword match domain names which I would like to utilize as landing pages for my business.I would like to know if it would be best to host each page as a seperte website?or would it be best to simply link the domain name thorugh the domain registrar to an already exisiting page on the main website. example: cheapshoes.com --> www.thebestshoes.com/cheapshoes I would like to do this in the most seo friendly manner so that the exact keyword domain is ranked within google without losing any PR. What is the value in Archiving and how can I avoid negative SEO impact?
I have been very busy reducing GWT duplicate content errors on my website, www.heartspm.com, created on a Wordpress platform. Each month, blog entries are being archived and each month is generating a duplicate description by Google. We post 2-3 blog entries per month and they don't really go out of date. Most are not news related butr rather they are nuggets of information on entomology. Do I need to use the archiving feature? Can I turn it off? Should I switch to archive perhaps once per year instead of every month and how is that done? How do I stop Google from creating its' own meta-description, duplicates each month for these archive entries? Should I have the archive as NOINDEX, FOLLOW? I'm not the programmer, but I have some technical know how, so I have a lot of half baked ideas and answers that could use some polishing. Thanks for your help and suggestions. Gerry

My client has lost his URL - is there anything he can do to salvage SEO?
My new client has had his URL for 8 years and built up good SEO, visitors and links. He has now lost it and the cost of getting it back is prohibitive. Apart from contacting all the places he is currently getting links from, is there anything he can do to salvage SEO and site visitors? Is there anyway he can get 301s done if he no longer owns the URL? If he starts again with a new URL, and loads all the new content on it, will submitting a site map help Google understand its not duplicate and all the content is just at a new URL? He is hoping that contacting Google and explaining will help them "look kindly", but I have never heard anything like this happening! Any ideas? Many thanks

If you only want your home page to rank, can you use rel="canonical" on all your other pages?
If you have a lot of pages with 1 or 2 inbound links, what would be the effect of using rel="canonical" to point all those pages to the home page? Would it boost the rankings of the home page? As I understand it, your long-tail keyword traffic would start landing on the home page instead of finding what they were looking for. That would be bad, but might be worth it.
