Our Rankings are being very inconsistent! Some days we are on the front page, some days we are not in the top 50\. This happens on a weekly and sometimes daily basis... Any thoughts on why this is happening? This newbie appreciates any feedback.

We seem to be having major issues with our rankings. When I came into the company, the company was in the middle of cleaning up some of their past SEO efforts that had caused some issues with some of the latest Google updates. We were able to get the site back up to par, and some of our rankings were improved back to the first page, but then they disappeared. They will head back to the first page and then disappear again on a weekly and sometimes daily basis.
Does anyone have any idea on why it will be doing this so inconsistently and so often?
This newbie appreciates any feedback!!!!!

How old is your site? Is it an e-commerce site? How many URLs? Have you always had the same domain name? The reason I ask these questions is because I am seeing the same thing on our site. We have many technical issues probably contributing to this. Some of them might be the same if we have similar sites.

Check GWT and see if there are any messages. There has been some reports of this problem and it could be due to old links not having any value anymore and Google is just adjusting.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I have been using SEOMoz ranking tool to get a lot of my ranking results, but thanks for the reminder on making sure that I am not seeing personalized results. It is just really frustrating when I see us ranking #3 for a keyword term, then in the afternoon not ranking at all...
-
Are you absolutely sure you are not seeing personalized results? The next time you see your site in a high position, try this:
1. Log out of google, do your search and then type &pws at the end of the search url and hit enter.
That usually works to depersonalize results, but I have seen it fail a couple of times. So here is another way (but it takes away any locational data, so can be a little false if you are trying to rank for a local term:
2. Go to www.pagewash.com and click the button to search on Google.com. Now do your search.
Are you still number one? If not, then what you were seeing before was a personalized search result.

Without a URL we cannot really help you. However you may be dealing with the Google dance. Also be sure to check for your rankings without being logged into any google account and be sure to clear you browsers settings prior to making your search.

Log-in page ranking instead of homepage due to high traffic on login page! How to avoid?
Hi all, Our log-in page is ranking in SERP instead of homepage and some times both pages rank for the primary keyword we targeted. We have even dropped. I am looking for a solution for this. Three points here to consider is: Our log-in page is the most visited page and landing page on the website. Even there is the primary keyword in this page or not; same scenario continues Log-in page is the first link bots touch when they crawling any page of our website as log-in page is linked on top navigation menu If we move login page to sub-domain, will it works? I am worrying that we loose so much traffic to our website which will be taken away from log-in page sub domain Please guide with your valuable suggestions. Thanks

Should plural keyword variations get their own targeted pages?
I am in the middle of changing a website from targeting just a single keyword on all pages to instead having each page target its own keyword/phrase. However, I'm a little conflicted on whether or not plural forms and other suffix (-ing) variations are different enough to get their own pages. SERP show different results for each keyword searched. Also, relevancy reports for the keywords score some differently and some the same. Is it best to instead use these as secondary and third level keywords on the same page as the main keyword for a page? See example below: OPTION A (Use each for different pages): Page 1 - Construction Fence Page 2 - Construction Fences Page 3 - Construction Fencing Page 4 - Construction Site Fence Page 5 - Construction Site Fences Page 6 - Construction Site Fencing ... OPTION B (Use as variations on same page): Page 1 - Construction Fence, Construction Fences, Construction Fencing Page 2 - Construction Site Fence, Construction Site Fences, Site Construction Fencing ... Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

One day impressions drop... how to figure out why?
I went back and looked through webmaster tools. I had around 3000 impressions per day leading up to 3/10/2014. Then on 3/11/2014, I dropped to 1000 impressions per day. Is there a good way to figure out what happened? Anyone know if there was a google update that day.

Simon Covell Divorce messed up my rankings, please advice?
Hi there, I was getting good ranking on some of the 'Divorce' related keywords but after Simon Covell name involved with divorce, I've just noticed that I am pushed back to page 4 today. Page 1 is one full of magazine and newspaper websites, i don't think i can compete with them. Shall I wait and hope that this news will be old and hopefully they won't rank or is there anything I can do bring back my rankings? It was one of our good converting keyword 😞 Thanks

Will Ranking Reports be Affected with the new Google Changes?
For example: Raven stopped use of scraped Google, SEMRush data on Jan. 2 Raven stopped offering unauthorized Google SERP rankings and keyword data (a.k.a. scraped Google data) on Jan. 2, 2013. The change included the retirement of the SERP Tracker and the elimination of SEMRush data from the Raven platform. Raven has released new SEO performance reports that make it easy to show clients the impact of campaigns to improve organic traffic. Raven will continue to upgrade reports through the year. We thank the many customers who continue their business with Raven. More details about the SEO performance reports and other recent releases are available Is SEOMoz protected in some way? Or will you have to give up rankings reports too?

Double Listings On Page One
I've been noticing a trend over the past month and a half. My sites that use to get more than one page listed in certain SERPs are now being adjusted. It almost looks manual but I know it is most likely a change in the algorithm. Let's say I had a SERP where my site was showing two different sub-pages in a single SERP at #4 and #6 are now having one page being pushed up to #3 but the other page is being pushed back past the first page. I'm not worried about penalizations or loss of value. I have been seeing this accross many of my client's sites. I just wanted to confirm that others were seeing it as well (so I'm not going crazy) and/or if Google has made any announcements or leaks regarding this shift. Maybe it's just my sites coming of age or something but I would love to be able to explain it more knowledgeably than with a "Google might be doing this". BTW - This is not effecting any of my Brand SERPs.

When did Google include display results per page into their ranking algorithm?
It looks like the change took place approx. 1-2 weeks ago. Example: A search for "business credit cards" with search settings at "never show instant results" and "50 results per page", the SERP has a total of 5 different domains in the top 10 (4 domains have multiple results). With the slider set at "10 results per page", there are 9 different domains with only 1 having multiple results. I haven't seen any mention of this change, did I just miss it? Are they becoming that blatant about forcing as many page views as possible for the sake of serving more ads?

Google Rankings Jumping Around
Hi, Since January, the Google rankings for one of our sites has been jumping around. Sometimes it's on page 1, then it disappears and comes back around 1 month later. It's strange because it's only a small section of the site that it's happening to. Every other section of the site is doing really well. Just wondered if anyone else is having this problem, or has had it and can suggest any fixes. There are no technical issues, no changes have been made to the site, all I can think is it's Google messing around with their algorithm? Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Karen
