Do Blog Comments On Your Site Help SEO?
-
There is a lot of debate as whether or not having comments on your blog is helpful from an SEO perspective.
Proponents believe that more comments (1) creates more content, which search engines love, (2) creates more relevant keywords that can be searched, and (3) helps with "freshness" of the site/content leading to greater site authority.
Others like Joost de Valk believe that comments can actually hurt SEO because keyword density cannot be controlled. He argues that his top SEO content are pages not posts for this very reason.
What is your opinion?
-
Hi Marc, Where does Joost say this about comments hurting SEO? I've been trying to find it online.
-
Thanks for sharing, Ewan. I completely agree that number of comments is a very important indicator of site quality.
-
I would agree with the 3 the proponents say but add 1 other and that is that seo is become more about trust/useful user friendly sites. So if you have posts on your blog which are getting comments this must be a key indicator to search engines that your content (post) is worth talking about and thus I'm sure helps with seo.
Quite possible Joost de Valk is correct that his top seo content are pages and not posts but posts are not pages they're something very different. Just my thoughts.

IMO it helps if you have real comments and not spam on your site. If you allow real people to comment and what they write adds value (questions, opinions, humor) then it will help your site because more people will bookmark it, and return to it. I've read in many articles that when you start your bogging, you should also visit other blogs within your niche and get them and some of their users interested in your blog and add comments (value) to your site/articles.

Local on-page SEO
If it feels like you are doing something wrong, then you 'probably' are... Local on-page SEO When optimising a page for local SEO, and trying tick all the usuals boxes, you find yourself adding words like 'golf clubs leeds' which sounds awful when part of a natural paragraph of text. Does Google recognise this poor use of grammar? We try to be as creative as possible, as not to offend the visitor, but it feels wrong... any advice? Thanks

SEO strategy recommendations?
Hi My website http://www.harrisbassett.co.uk is now ranking on the 1st page of Bing and Google for phrases such as Chartered Accountant Swansea and Tax Planners Swansea But the phrase 'accountants swansea' is still performing poorly - as it is near the bottom of the second page? Would I be better placing more accountant swansea phrases on the homepage of the site or would this have an adverse effect on the current 'Chartered Accountants Swansea' ranking as would this be classed as keyword cannabilisation? So would it be better to further optimise http://www.harrisbassett.co.uk/accounting.htm and include the phrases Accountants Swansea and Auditors Swansea or would this act against the homepage? Sorry for the questions I am just looking for the best route forward to further boost the ranking on additional terms as the majority of the 1st page listings seem to weak?

On-Site Optimization and Repeat Customers
Hello, One of my clients has repeat customers. All of his surface level categories are optimized. None of his 2nd or 3rd level categories are optimized at all. Is there any harm in optimizing these 2nd or 3rd level categories. Is there any way it could cause a problem with repeat customers? I didn't think so but I want to make sure. Thanks!
