On-site adjustment opinions
-
Hi folks,
I've got a fairly interesting scenario. I'm trying to rank this page (http://www.staysa.co.za/sa/1-2-0-0-1/East-London/accommodation) better for the term, "accommodation east london". The client isn't keen on making many changes and it was built horribly with ASP, half CMS, half not.
I have made the following changes today:
- I introduced two paragraphs of text below the H1 tag.
- I changed "East London Bed and Breakfast", "East London Conference Venues", "East London Cottage / Chalet" to just "Bed and Breakfast", "Conference Venues", "Cottage / Chalet" as the continual key phrase duplication in my experience is a bad move.
- I've made a change to the title tag (this is a huge mission as it's not CMS controlled, so I had to teach myself some basic ASP to do so).
- Meta data.. nightmare to change unfortunately, at least not without rewriting part of the CMS.
I'm wondering, are there any other on-site factors that I'm missing? I'm not a fan of site-wide links, so I don't want to put an exact match anchor text link from the sidebar/footer to the page, not unless someone can motivate why I should.
Keen to hear everyone's opinions

Thanks Oleg,
I get like that too sometimes, where I feel like giving back to the community - karma.
Thank you for your advise and for the links, I shall do some reading and implement things accordingly.
Really appreciate this!

In a super helpful mood today
I would either incorporate nofollows to pages that arent as important or moving them lower down the page. Sitewide quick links would give it more juice than the "popular cities & town" box on hp.
This is also a great time to examine your analytics heatmap and see how users interact with the site. Use it to help determine what people are looking for/what they are clicking on and make it easier to them to get there. This will help you remove duds and promote high value pages (like the east long accomodation page)

Hi Oleg,
Cheers for your feedback, I saw you were "on duty", hehe, so was hoping that you'd respond.
Point taken about the sidebar link, perhaps I should add one there dispite my dislike for site wide links. That said, there's a Popular Cities & Town box on the home page, that links to this page, or do you feel site wide is more important?
I didn't think about the pagination, I shall do that, thank you.
What are your thoughts on those internal links at the top of the page and possibly incorporating nofollows? I agree with you that they are diluting the page horribly, an internal link count revealed around 108 internal links on that page alone!
Let me know what you think.
PS. Yes, new design and setup would be ideal, but there isn't budget for that unfortunately.

I feel you, working with crappy legacy setups is the worst! Some notes;
There are a LOT of links on the page diluting the power of this page - you might even have more links than text. In addition, that page isn't being linked in the quick links sidebar - this most likely signals to G that this page isn't one of the more important ones on the site.
The paginated pages should have canonicals set up --> rel=next and rel=previous. As it stands, your pages are near duplicates.
I would recommend is new site design and setup though.

Use 302 redirect when site crashes
My company has switched to a new ecommerce platform that we are not totally familiar with yet. As we've worked with it, we've had a couple situations where both the front and back ends of our site crashed simultaneously (always after installing a third party module). The platform's built-in backup solution hasn't been an option in those situations so we've been coming up with alternatives. We now have a duplicate of the site on our server for such emergencies. The plan is to have pages on the broken site point to the backup site using 302 redirects until the broken site is fixed. Is this correct usage of the 302 redirect? I often see people recommend to never use 302 redirects, but I thought this might be the kind of situation where they'd be appropriate. If so, are there other SEO considerations we should keep in mind? For example, I'm wondering if we should put canonical tags on the temporary site that point to the broken site so the broken site stays in the SE indexes.

Unnatural links from your site
Hi, 24 February got this penalty message in Google webmaster tool. Google detected a pattern of unnatural, artificial, deceptive, or manipulative outbound links on pages on this site. This may be the result of selling links that pass PageRank or participating in link schemes. Already removed all the link on the blog and sent reconsideration request to Google spam team. But request is rejected. Please help me on this or share link with me on same case. Thanks,

Micro-sites for Landing Pages?
We are working with a site that is difficult at best to update. The client intends to re-do the site in 18 months or so but needs to start generating more traffic (and sales) now. What are thoughts on creating landing pages as micro-sites that point to the current site conversion page as a stop gap? Beyond not sharing authority is there any known penalty? By the way they don't have tremendous ranking right now - often bottom of page two - and the micro-site won't duplicate any content.

Webmaster Tools Links To Your Site
I logged onto webmaster tools today for my site and the section 'Links to Your Site' is showing no data. Also if I search using link:babskibaby.com it only shows 1 link. My site had been showing 500+ links previously. Does anyone know why this is?

E-Commerce site and blogs
We have e-Commerce site and an official blog to give advice about our products. This blog exists under our domain. Usually we build links directly to our site. Recently our ranking started going down. Also, we have been experiencing backlash for spam based on our link building (we are working on this, including a change of staff, but we cannot be sure that this will not happen again). This backlash has come through our social networking outlets (Facebook) in the form of very negative posts to our pages. One of our "SEOs" has devised a plan to use secondary blogs which we would start building links for. This blog would contain links back to our website. The idea is that the blog acts as a gate in a sense, in this way backlash is either posted on the blog or is directed at the blog. Also, we would be attempting to raise the page authority of these secondary blogs so in essence they act as high page authority links back to our website. The concern is that these secondary blogs may undermine the legitimacy of the official primary blog, which is still in its early stages as far as ranking and authority goes. Also, we are concerned that this technique would further undermine the legitimacy of the website itself by creating a larger "spam-like" presence, since visitors may see through the use of the secondary link through blogs.
