Penalty on two primary keywords
-
Hi Seomoz,
I have been strugling to get www.texaspoker.dk out of what seems to be a keyword specific penalty (we are on page 5 on "poker" and "online poker").
First I thought it was Penguin related, but I'm not so sure any longer. I have removed all the bad links to my site possible (it's not easy to get other people to remove links, I can tell you), and I have reported all the links that I would like google to "ignore" (reconsideration request) ... all in all I have requested for reconsideration 5 times, and - despite some small changes - I got the same answer every time.
We violate the quality guide lines and we should be looking for unnatural links pointing to our site.
If any one - by having a look at our site - have any idea what could be wrong, please don't hold back, we would love to hear your point of view.
Right now we are in the middle of making our partners take off their site wide links to us (the partners you'll find if you click the flags to the right in the top of the home page). On Texaspoker.dk we only link to the partners from the home page, but maybe we should consider to take of even these links? No one is really clicking on them anyway.
Another thing, which is only under consideration, is to ask our partners from Betxpert.com (with whom we have exchanged our news feed - you will find their feed if you schroll down the home page) to set the feed to "no follow" and do the same our selves. What do you think of this thought?
As far as I can see, there is nothing wrong with the on page optimization, but maybe some one can see what I don't see?
Again - what ever thoughts you guys may have - shoot ... i'm ready to take all bulets
Thanks in advance!
Nicolai, Texaspoker.dk

Hi Nocolai,
No problem. Yes, having the link from only the homepage should help. This often happens when a website uses the same template for the whole site which means the link becomes a sitewide link and looks unnatural to search engines. Double check that there is also some anchor text or an image because it didn't look like there was any when I checked. If they are adverts then the links should use nofollow.

Hi Maximise,
Thanks a lot for your reply and help. I will get the links removed right away. I'm planing to ask our international partners only to link from the home page - do you think that will do the job (if the links from the flags are the reason for the penalty)?
Thanks a lot - your help is deeply appreciated
Nicolai

I can certainly feel your pain as I have also recently trying to get links removed.
One thing I have noticed is that you have about 18000 links pointing to your site with no anchor text. I had a quick look at a few of these links and they look like this:
<a <span="">id</a><a <span="">="flags" class="dk" href="</a>http://www.texaspoker.dk" title="Texaspoker.dk" target="_blank">
Do you know what the purpose of these links are? As there is no anchor text the links probably aren't visible to users and they are also not nofollowed, these look very spammy and I would get them changed if possible.

Deleting Tags without Penalty?
Hello - We have a site with over 1,000 tags. We added too many and would like a fresh start as they are creating a lot of duplicate pages on the site. What is the best way to go about deleting all of these tags without being penalized by Google? Is there a way to tell Google direclty to stop crawling them? We would prefer to not have that many pages just sit as 404 errors on the site. Thank you.

Top domain(s) not at all showing up for branded keywords
Hey guys! Hope you're all doing well. I need your smart brains for a problem the company I work for is currently facing in the realm of SEO. They wanted to hire someone to find the problem, but I thought I would reach out to you guys, first, to at least try and narrow down the long list of things we could look at/investigate. I put the info (briefly) on 3 slides, and would really appreciate any and all insights you can offer me: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/12d0YH7BNdCIpJ86d95uBOtOWphWQ3NB1kwDYeOzIt-U/edit#slide=id.g19145c9fa5_0_0 Thank you in advance!

Huge drop for main branded keyword
The past week the main branded keyword for a site i am working on has dropped from the top three on Google US to page 7! It is still ranking in the top three on Google in other areas. I recently redirected /index.php to / using .htaccess. Could this have caused a problem? If not, what else could have caused such a huge drop?

Domain authority and keyword difficulty
I know there are too many variables for a certain answer, however do people take their domain authority into account when using keyword difficulty tool? I have a new domain which only has a score of seven at the moment. When using the keyword searching tool what is the maximum difficulty level keywords people would target initially? Obviously I would seek to increase the difficulty of the words over time but to start off its a hard choice between keywords which can be ranked for in a reasonable period of time and the keywords which are getting enough traffic to make the effort worthwhile.

Is this keyword strategy totally wrong?
I have a Driving School website www.1stclassdriving.co.uk. The site is structured geographically with one page per Area
Technical SEO | | Brian_Worger
(post code) and one page per Driving Instructor. There are links from each Area page to the instructors
working in the Area. The principal search keyword that I want to optimise on is
"Driving Lessons" The thinking was to target each individual Area page for
"Driving lessons in xxx" where xxx is the particular geographic area
and each particular Instructor to "Driving Lessons in yyy" where yyy
is the main town . The ideal would be that a search on "Driving
Lessons" would pick up the root page - search on an area, say "Driving
Lessons in Croydon" would pick up the Croydon area page and a search on a
town, say "Driving lessons in Mitcham" would pick up the Instructor
that covered that town page. However having read Rebeccas Keyword research guide I am
concerned that this strategy is wrong because of the volume of pages that use
"Driving Lessons in xxxx". Does this fall foul of "Keyword cannibalization" ?
and if so what is the best way of being able to achieve our objective?0 -
If I point a domain name to a new faster server, will I lose some keyword ranking?
I'm redesigning a client's site, breaking up content into separate pages and moving the site to a managed server keeping the same domain name. Will I lose any link juice or keyword ranking for site even if I 301 redirect the old pages to the new titled pages?
