Duplicate content due to csref
-
Hi,
When i go trough my page, i can see that alot of my csref codes result in duplicate content, when SeoMoz run their analysis of my pages.
Off course i get important knowledge through my csref codes, but im quite uncertain of how much it effects my SEO-results.
Does anyone have any insights in this? Should i be more cautios to use csref-codes or dosent it create problems that are big enough for me to worry about them.

Yes, to set up rel-canonical properly, every page that could conceivably be tagged with a csref= parameter should have a self-referencing canonical. The tags are easy to set up, in theory, but once you get into a large site and/or CMS, setting them up on dozens or hundreds of pages can be tricky. Ultimately, it's a more effective approach that has some other benefits (like scooping up stray duplicates that may have been created by other URL parameters), but it really depends on your development resources and how complex your site is.

Hi,
Thanks for quick and competent reply.
I guess the reason that google only have registred 8 pages, is that many of the pages we have csref on are campaign pages, and they havent "lived" for so long yet.
As i understand you, there are two ways to proceed with this. One beeing informing in Google Webmaster Tools that google should ignore the csref-parameter, and the other beeing the canonical links.
The first is quite straight forward i guess, its just a matter of registrering in Google Webmaster Tools, that all URLs with www.tryg.dk as main domain, should not be followed by Google.
The latter im not that sure of how to proceed with, its a matter of registrering every page with csref with a cannoical link? Or how is the best way to proceed with that.

The good news is that you only seem to have about 8 of these pages in the Google index. You can use this query on Google to see them:
site:www.tryg.dk inurl:csref
Ideally, I'd use the canonical tag on those pages to strip out the parameter and de-index any duplicates, but across the site that can be tricky. You could also tell Google Webmaster Tools to ignore the csref parameter via parameter handling - it's not quite as robust a solution, but it's a lot easier to implement.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
It is excactly a URL generated based on our tracking codes, f.eg. when i look in the list of duplicated content on our page here in SeoMoz, i get the following URLs:
http://www.tryg.dk/om-tryg/fakta-om-tryg/samarbejdspartnere/index.html?csref=Disclaimer_Nordea http://www.tryg.dk/om-tryg/fakta-om-tryg/samarbejdspartnere/index.html?csref=Bundmenu_Om_Tryg_Vores_Partnere
http://www.tryg.dk/om-tryg/fakta-om-tryg/samarbejdspartnere/index.html
The latter beeing the "original" page for this, and the two above beeing page URLs generated by URLs with csrefs, which are generated by our tracking via Omniture.
So my question is how i make sure that it do not have a negative effect on our SEO.

Apologies, but I'm not familiar with the csref parameter - could you tell me what information it passes or give me a sample URL (you can make it generic and mask your domain info)?
It sounds like some kind of tracking code, in which case it can definitely start to create duplicate content issues. You could probably use the rel=canonical tag to make Google "collapse" those pages, or you could tell Google to ignore the parameter in Google Webmaster Tools. Neither should impact your tracking.

Duplicate content when working with makes and models?
Okay, so I am running a store on Shopify at the address https://www.rhinox-group.com. This store is reasonably new, so being updated constantly! The thing that is really annoying me at the moment though, is I am getting errors in the form of duplicate content. This seems to be because we work using the machine make and model, which is obviously imperative, but then we have various products for each machine make and model. Have we got any suggestions on how I can cut down on these errors, as the last thing I want is being penalised by Google for this! Thanks in advance, Josh

Duplicate content and 404 errors
I apologize in advance, but I am an SEO novice and my understanding of code is very limited. Moz has issued a lot (several hundred) of duplicate content and 404 error flags on the ecommerce site my company takes care of. For the duplicate content, some of the pages it says are duplicates don't even seem similar to me. additionally, a lot of them are static pages we embed images of size charts that we use as popups on item pages. it says these issues are high priority but how bad is this? Is this just an issue because if a page has similar content the engine spider won't know which one to index? also, what is the best way to handle these urls bringing back 404 errors? I should probably have a developer look at these issues but I wanted to ask the extremely knowledgeable Moz community before I do 🙂

Duplicate content for vehicle inventory.
Hey all, In the automotive industry... When uploading vehicle inventory to a website I'm concerned with duplicate content issues. For example, 1 vehicle is uploaded to the main manufacturers website, then again to the actual dealerships website & then again to Craigslist & even sometimes to a group site. The information is all the same, description, notes, car details & images. What would you all recommend for alleviating duplicate content issues? Should I be using the rel canonical back to the manufacturers website? Once the vehicle is sold all pages disappear. Thanks so much for any advice.

Duplicate Content Problem!
Hi folks, I have a quite awkward problem. Since a few weeks a get a huge amount of "duplicate content errors" in my MOZ crawl reports. After a while of looking for the error I thought of the domains I've bought additionally. So I went to Google and typed in site:myotherdomains.com The results was as I expected that my original website got indexed with my new domains aswell. That means: For example my original website was index with www.domain.com/aboutus - Then I bought some additional domains which are pointing on my / folder. What happened is that I also get listed with: www.mynewdomains.com/com How can I fix that? I tried a normal domain redirect but it seems as this doesn't help as when I am visiting www.mynewdomains.com the domain doesnt change in my browser to www.myoriginaldomain.com but stays with it ... I was busy the whole day to find a solution but I am kinda desperate now. If somebody could give me advice it would be much appreciated. Mike

Duplicate Content based on www.www
In trying to knock down the most common errors on our site, we've noticed we do have an issue with dupicate content; however, most of the duplicate content errors are due to our site being indexed with www.www and not just www. I am perplexed as to how this is happening. Searching through IIS, I see nothing that would be causing this, and we have no hostname records setup that are www.www. Does anyone know of any other things that may cause this and how we can go about remedying it?
