Merging Domains... Sub-domains, Directories or Seperate Sites?

Hello!
I am hoping you can help me decide the best path to take here...
A little background:
I'm moving to a new company that has three old domains (the oldest is 10 years old), which get a lot of traffic from their e-letters. Until recently they have not cared about SEO. So the websites have some structural, coding, URL and other issues. The sites are indexed, but have a problem getting crawled and/or indexed for new content - haven't delved into this yet but am certain I will be able to fix any of these issues.
These three domains are PR4, PR4, PR5 and contain hundreds of unique articles.
Here's the question...
They want to move these three sites **to their main company site (PR4) and create sub domains for each one. **
I am wondering if this is a good idea or not. I have merged sites before (creating categories and/or directories) and the end result is that the ONE big site, is much for effective than TWO smaller, less authoritative sites. But the sub domain idea is something I am unsure about from an SEO perspective.
Should we do this with sub domains? Or do you think we should keep the sites separate? How do Panda and Penguin play into this?

P.S. I'm not a huge advocate in using PR as a measurement tool, but since I can't reveal the actual domains, I figured I would list it as a reference point.

I think at the end of the day, yes it does help the user to have it all in one place.
And thanks for reiterating what I already thought... directories are better than sub-domains.

I agree with what you are thinking. The biggest effect would be if you can move them all onto one domain name (sub-folders) and setup 301 redirects. Keep hosting those domains forever since the 301s would stay only as long as you own the domains and continue to host them to serve the 301.
Moving them to sub-domains might be minimal / zero effect. I only see risk in doing that.
Ask yourself: Does it help the users in integrating all the content into one big website ?

I guess my biggest concerns are getting the biggest SEO bump I can by consolidating this content, but avoid any content farm penalties.
I was thinking subdomains would be safer, but provide the little to no SEO value.

I have been concerned that I would be in essence creating a content farm because like I mentioned, these sites have hundreds or thousands of articles on them. And they publish 1-3 articles a day on average.
So you did this in early 2011 and found no ill effects from Panda?

Subdomains are often viewed by google as different domains. That means, links that hit one of them benefit that subdomain but transfer fractional benefit to other subdomains and to the root.
If this was my project I would use folders instead of subdomains. Your designer can make them look unique if that is needed, however, with them all being in the root directory all of the incoming links will benefit the entire site.
In early 2011 I redirected two subdomains of a busy site (one more powerful than the root domain) into folders and the results have been kickass. Kickass.

As long as your content is well structured amongst the sub-domains and root domain I can't see why there would be any issues. When making the change ensure that you:
- Tell Google that the URL is moving (do this via Google Webmaster Tools)
- Add permanent 301 redirects from the old URLs and point to their respective URLs on the new domain (this is to ensure that any backlinks the old websites had will pass some link juice through)
- Don't stop hosting the old domains for say 6 months.
- Run a backlink check on the old URLs and try get those websites (provided they are of good quality) to update the link to the new sub-domain. For those that don't update the 301 redirect will help.

Shopify Site with Multiple Domains?
Hey there! My client has a website on Shopify. I don't even know how to open this can of worms, but let me try. The site URL is: https://mobilityequipmentforless.com/ However, there is another (older?) URL that gets updated as the main site gets updated and shows the exact same content. It's a straight duplicate, but is it's own URL and doesn't redirect to the main site. https://www.powerchairrecyclers.com/ And this isn't the SITE.Shopify back-end site name that was used for set up initially. I just have no idea what's going on here. Not sure if it's a serious error that needs to be fixed, or if it's something weird with how Shopify work. Any insight would be immensely helpful. Thanks! Best way to go about merging 2 sites with significant search volume?
Hi everyone! A client of ours ('Company A') recently acquired another company ('Company B') - both brands carry weight within their industry. Company A's brand name currently registers over 6,500 searches per month, while Company B's brand name draws about 2,500 searches per month. While Company B is smaller, their search volume isn't insignificant. The powers that be plan to discontinue Company B's site at an unspecified date in the future, but it's on the backburner. We'd obviously like to transfer as much of their current ranking as possible, but we also don't want to confuse users. There's additional search volume for term variations such as 'Company B jobs' & 'Company B locations' that we'd like to capture for as long as there's still volume there. Would a microsite with Company B's look & feel (to make it easier to house pages built to capture careers/locations searches) justify its inherent cost, or would it be just as valuable to build a series of landing pages on Company A's site? (Obviously assuming that valid redirects would be in place once Company B's site is taken down.) Thanks in advance!

What are best page titles for sub-folders or sub-directories? Same as website?
Hi all, We always mention "brand & keyword" in every page title along with topic in the website, like "Topic | vertigo tiles". Let's say there is a sub-directory with hundreds of pages...what will be the best page title practice in mentioning "brand & keyword" across all pages of sub-directory to benefit in-terms if SEO? Can we add "vertigo tiles" to all pages of sub-directory? Or we must not give same phrase? Thanks,

I have a general site for my insurance agency. Should I create niche sites too?
I work with several insurance agencies and I get this questions several times each month. Most agencies offer personal and business insurance and in a certain geographic location. I recommend creating a quality general agency site but would they have more success creating other nice sites as well? For example, a niche site about home insurance and one about auto insurance. What would your recommendation be?

Optimal site structure for travel site
Hi there, I am seo-managing a travel website where we are going to make a new site structure next year. We have about 4000 pages on the site at the moment. The structure is only 2-levels at the moment: Level 1: Homepage Level 2: All other pages (4000 individual pages - (all with different urls)) We are adding another 2-3 levels, but we have a challenge: We have potentially 2 roads to the same product (e.g. "phuket diving product") domain.com/thailand/activities/diving/phuket-diving-product.asp domain.com/activities/diving/thailand/phuket-diving-product.asp I would very much appreciate your view on the problem: How do I solve this dilemma/challenge from a SEO standpoint? Pros and cons of seperate sites vs. subdomains
First timer and new to SEO We are designing a website for a customer in south america that has 3 distinct divisions. We want to develop the site in the most SEO effective way possible. Each division will have its own keyword focus, its own associations and its own links. They will all link to each other from the main page company.com. we were thinking of creating 4 different seperate domains such as... www.company.com - basic high level company information with links to the other external sites below. www.company-contructionsoftware.com www.company-itservices.com www.company-graphicdesign.com so my questions are: 1- is it better in the long run to have domains that have the search terms in the url like specified above? We can optimize for the main site as well as the individual sites separately 2- would the result be the same using subdomains? for example, itservices.company.com 3- possibly hosting the 3 different sites in different locations? 7 years old domain sandboxed for 8 months, wait or make a domain change?
Hello folks The questions is, if a domain, 7 years old being sandboxed due to "notice of unnatural links to website" does it make sense to make a domain change (301 permanent redirect and make a "domain change" under google webmaster tools) to another, aged(!) domain name?

I am currently working on a huge website which ranks very well receiving 150,000 visitors every day. I have been offered the chance to buy some more domain names which would suit my keywords in the current site. These domains as a keyword also receive huge amounts of traffic. Would it be beneficial for me to do this....if so why? Thanks
