Similar category names result in similar urls and duplicate anchor texts
-
Hi all,
I'm working on an e-commerce website about car tuning and car parts.
There are main categories like ( Aerodynamics, Power tuning, Interior, Wheels, Tires, etc. ) and in the products are organized in sub-categories representing the product manufacturer, car manufacturer and car model + modification. Unfortunately this kind of structure creates duplicate sub-category names. For example we can have parts for Audi A4 8K in Aerodynamics and ABT, and the same time we can have Power tuning from the same manufacturer and for the same car, or Sport brakes for the same car by different manufacturers.
So here are how some links look-like:
/alfa-romeo-147-c1070-en
/alfa-romeo-147-c234-en
/alfa-romeo-147-c399-en
These are totally different categories, with the same anchor text and almost the same url addresses ( the only difference in the urls is the category id ).
Can this be affecting the site's indexation, and which can be the better way to create the internal link structure ?

Hi Aran,
thanks for the fast response.
Here's more detailed information about the sub-categories:
1st Category
Performance > Chip Tuning & Power Box > Power Box - Diesel Engines > Alfa Romeo 147
url - /alfa-romeo-147-c1070-en
2nd Category
Aerodynamics > Rieger Tuning > Alfa Romeo 147
url - /alfa-romeo-147-c234-en
3rd Category
Lighting > Tail Lights > Alfa Romeo 147
url - /alfa-romeo-147-c399-en
The url represents the name of the subcategory with it's category id and the language.
I was thinking of changing only the url, but the urls will become much much longer, and this will not help with the problem with the anchor texts and the keyword cannibalisation ...
-
You'll probably find that you'll get keyword cannibalisation with multiple pages all jockeying for the same Key Phrases.
Possibly a big and risky job, but could you not rewrite the URLs to include the category name rather than cat id?
/Alfa-romeo-147-sport-brakes-en
Without seeing the site and checking out the current structure its hard to say exactly I would structure it. Can you post a link?
Cheers
Aran

Stuck with canonical URL - main site vs categorys?
Hello, I started to doubt myself. We have a classified advertisements website. On the main www.website.com page, almost all the advertisements are shown. Now we take those advertisements and also split them into categorys Category 1 / category 2 / category 3 / category 4 Now all those categories almost always have the same content as www.website.com except a bit less (because X amount of content is now divided also to 4-5 groups) For raking should i actually tell google that those categories are a copy of www.website.com or they should still be as they are?

I have no idea where these weird urls have came from , but they do take us to the correct page (but it seems a duplicate of this page). correct url http://www.acsilver.co.uk/shop/pc/Antique-Vintage-Rings-c152.htm Incorrect url http://www.acsilver.co.uk/shop/pc/vintage-Vintage-Rings- c152.htm This is showing for most of our store categories 😞 Desperate for help as to what could be causing these issues. I have a technical member of the ecommerce software go through the large sitemap files and they assured me it wasn't linked to the sitemap files. Gemma

When is Duplicate Content Duplicate Content
Hi, I was wondering exactly when duplicate content is duplicate content? Is it always when it is word-for-word or if it is similar? For example, we currently have an information page and I would like to add a FAQ to the website. There is, however, a crossover with the content and some of it is repeated. However, it is not written word for word. Could you please advise me? Thanks a lot Tom

Is using JavaScript injected text in line with best practice on making blocks of text non-crawlable?
I have an ecommerce website that has common text on all the product pages, e.g. delivery and returns information. Is it ok to use non-crawlable JavaScript injected text as a method to make this content invisible to search engines? Or is this method frowned upon by Google? By way of background info - I'm concerned about duplicate/thin content, so want to tackle this by reducing this 'common text' as well as boosting unique content on these pages. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Duplicate Page Content
I've got several pages of similar products that google has listed as duplicate content. I have them all set up with rel="prev" and rel="next tags telling google that they are part of a group but they've still got them listed as duplicates. Is there something else I should do for these pages or is that just a short falling of googles webmaster tools? One of the pages: http://www.jaaronwoodcountertops.com/wood-countertop-gallery/walnut-countertop-9.html

During the crwal SEO moz found duplicate title problems with quite a good number of pages. This was because my site has test questions like http://www.skill-guru.com/12/scjp-5-mock-test/questions and when user does next or previous, they can traverse to different pages but the title and descrition would remain same. How can this probkem be resolved ?
