Website redesign launch
-
Hello everyone,
I am in the process of having my consulting website redesigned and have a question about how this may impact SEO. I will be using the same URL as I did before, just simply replacing an old website with a new website.
Obviously the URL structure will change slightly since I am changing navigation names. Page titles will also change.
Do I need to do anything special to ensure that all of the pages from the old website are redirected to the new website?
For example, should I do a page level redirect for each page that remains the same? So that the old "services" page is pointed to the new "services" page?
Or can I simply do a redirect at the index page level?
Thank you in advance for any advice!
Best,
Linda

Thank you for your patience in explaining it! I really appreciate your time.
-
Exactly! Good luck!
-
Ok, I think I understand. But let me spell it out to make sure.
old site home page = www.mysite.com
new site home page = www.mysite.com
No 301 redirect necessary for this page.
old site services page = www.mysite.com/services
new site services page = www.mysite.com/what-i-offer
301 redirect is necessary for this page from the old "services" page to the new "what-i-offer" page.
Correct?
-
Correct : )
but if you want to move a page within the site you do.
So if you wanted to move www.yoursite.com/page1 to www.yoursite.com/page2
you would need a 301 redirect because you are changing the URL of that page.
-
Ah, I got it. My URL is staying the same, so I do NOT need to do ANY 301 redirects.
Right?
-
Hi Linda, No I am saying if the URL is changing then you should do a 301 redirect. If the URL is staying the same then you will not need any redirects. However, if you have 5 pages that you want to combine, you can 301 redirect all 5 pages to one of the pages. 301 redirect does a few things, as far as the search engine it tells the search engine that the page has moved this also passes most your link juice (page rank) and prevents duplicate content issues.

Hi Donnie,
Thanks for your response. So, are you saying that I won't need a redirect from my old home page to my new homepage, but I should create 301 redirects from my old "internal" pages to my new "internal" pages?
If I have old internal pages that I am not replicating on the new site, should I include a redirect for those to the new homepage?
Thank you.
Linda

As long as your URL will remain the same you do not need any redirects.
If you have a page www.example.com/contact-us and a page www.example.com/connect-with-us and you are combining them, then you would do a 301 redirect from one page to the new page.

Any SEO benefits of adding a Glossary to our website?
Hi all, I manage a website for a software company. Many terms can be quite tricky so it would be nice to add a Glossary page. Other than that, I have 2 questions: 1. What would be the SEO benefits? 2. How would you suggest to implement this glossary so we can get as much SEO benefit as possible (for example how would we link, where would we place the glossary in the terms of the sitemap, etc.). Any advice appreciated! Katarina

Website of Products by a Brand on a Sub-Domain or a Sub-Directory?
Hi, We have a brand website under which we plan to develop various apps. We think that putting each website on its own sub-domain would be a good option. E.g. Main website – abc.com; app1 website – app1.abc.com; app2 website – app2.abc.com etc. Would it be the right way to do it or should we put the apps in a sub-directory. E.g. abc.com/app1; abc.com/app2 etc. These apps would either be totally unrelated or may be in future we may provide something so as to enable their integration. Thanks

Websites that scroll....forever....
I'm seeing more and more websites that have all their content on one page. I came across www.otbthink.com today and am wondering if I'm missing something here. I ask this because I am trying to figure out how to link to their copy writing portion of their website. I have a client that is in their area and needs someone to do some copy writing work for them. All the content there is being served through css. The search engines will see it but how do you optimize for this sort of site? How do you link to a particular section of this site? Am I missing something obvious here? Thanks.

Website isn't Ranking for Any Keyword
Hi, I launched a playhouses website in april this year and have been steadily link building to it over the past few months. I have gotten all of the internal optimisation correct (that I can see) however it is still not ranking for any keyword and suprinsgly all of our traffic is comming either direct or through bing. The website is showing as being in googles index however it is still not ranking for even the smallest of niche keywords. The only penalty I can see is that we have some spammy blog links that my colleague has gotten which I have been trying to counteract with high quality guest blogging. Any input is welcome the url is http://www.playhouses.co.uk/ Simon

What is the most effective way of indexing a localised website?
Hi all, I have a website, www.acrylicimage.com which provides products in three different currencies, $, £ and Euro. Currently a user can click on a flag to indicate which region they are in, or if the user has not manually selected the website looks at the users Locale setting and sets the region for them. The website also has a very simple content management system which provides ever so slightly different content depending on which region the user is in. The difference in content might literally be a few words per page, like contact details, measurements i.e. imperial to metric. I dont believe that GoogleBot, or any other bot for that matter, sets a Locale, and therefore it will only ever be indexing the content on our default region - the UK. So, my question really is if I need to be able to index different versions of content on the same page, is the best route to provide alternate urls i.e.: /en/about-us
Technical SEO | | dotcentric
/us/about-us
/eu/about-us The only potential downside I see to this is there are currently a couple of pages that do have exactly the same content regardless of whether you have selected the UK or USA regions - could this be considered content duplication? Thanks for your help. Al0 -
Google website-links changing back and fourth
Thought I might ask you guys if you have ever seen anything similar, 'cause I sure haven't. 🙂 I have a client who stumbled across a problem with his website links. Google change them back and fourth. one day one of the links will be called "iPhone 4 accessories" and some weeks pass and then it changes to " 4 accessories". Weeks pass again and then the iphone is back. First I thought to myself that Google might have expanded the AdWords filter to include website-links.. But then I remembered that they were ordered by the EU courts to size that practice.. so that can't be it. Plus allot of his competition doesn't seem to have the same problem. I have checked everything, the links, title tags, page titles exc.. and I acn't realt find any reason why this should be happening to him and I must admit I have never seen anything similar. Any hints and pointers would be most welcome 🙂
