Ranking for broad search terms
-
Hello,
ive been getting some good organic traffic lately, i always run the live real time analytics and have noticed that the site is ranking for very broad terms and not specific exact keywords that i have the pages optimized for. Is there a reason for this?
thx

Thanks Very much, I was not 100% sure as this new traffic spike is new to me, in the past i was relying on ppc and just very minor organic traffic. It seems as though the spike started after BOTW added my link? Im not sure if that is directly the cause? I have been optimizing now for quite some time, individual pages, blogs, PR's, Social. Its unbelievable actually just how much work goes into it!

Sites that are new are not as trusted, and have a more difficult time ranking for exact terms. As your site gains authority you should start seeing some additional traffic for more specific terms - depending on your site's level of optimization, industry and keywords you are targeting. Traffic will always be a mix of brand, long tail, and more exact KWs though.
-
it is approx 2 yrs old. why do you ask?
-
Is the website new, or is it pretty well established?
-
yes sorry they are more long tail
-
By broad do you mean more long-tail search terms? This is pretty normal, especially if the exact keywords are in a competitive space.

How is it possible to rank first for a keyword, when the keyword isn't written on the page?
I noticed that one of our competitors is ranking in first position for a keyword but when looking on the page grader. The exact keyword is not used on the page at all (or in title, URL etc.). How is this possible, when other sites have content with those exact words?

Is there a way to identify the phrases and pages involved in your URLS receiving search visits?
Our client seems to get 20 - 30 visits a month to pages which people arrived on via a search, without visiting home page and navigating there. Is there a way we can identify both the phrases the person used to arrive at the page, and the page itself? The graph is tantalizing, but without deeper insight into what the phrases and pages were, we can't focus on the phrases in question. And we'd like to do this, because the phrase may represent potential long tail phrases we could use. Thanks! Eric.

So you have a keyword, and you want to see what page a competitor ranks
Say you are looking at a bunch of keywords and you think a competitor ranks for one of them. Is there any simple tool you can use to 1. put in keyword 2. put in domain of site RESULT - it tells you exactly where the site ranks. Broad Vs. Exact Match
My question seems basic in nature but some recent keyword research has caused me to re-think broad vs. exact match. I was taught to focus on exact match for the short term and broad match for the long term prospects of a keyword. Today I was researching a niche of keyword phrases where the local search volume (broad) was, for example 33,000. The local search volume (exact) was only 500. What I know about broad vs. exact doesn't help me to determine if this keyword is worth going after. The keyword difficulty score by the way was 35% Yes, I do know that I will probably go after this keyword anyway but to refine my question, how do I get an idea of how "big" this keyword is? Is it more on the broad or more on the exact match of things? How do I determine the various derivatives of the phrase that occur under the broad match?

Search Traffic down 50% but rankings same?
One of my client's sites is experiencing a major decrease in search traffic (by 50%) but the main terms she usually gets traffic for, she's ranking the same or even better over the period of time that the traffic has decreased. What could cause this?
