"Too many on page links" phantom penalty? What about big sites?
-
So I am consistently over the recommended "100 links" rule on our site's pages because of our extensive navigation and plentiful footer links (somewhere around 300 links per page). I know that there is no official penalty for this but rather that it affects the "link juice" of each link on there. I guess my question is more about how places like Zappos and Amazon get away with this? They have WAY over 100 links per page... in fact I think that Zappos footer is 100+ links alone. This overage doesn't seem to affect their domain rankings and authority so why does SEO moz place so much emphasis on this error?
-
I can totally agree with that statement. Perhaps I misspoke. Im not asking for them to set my guidelines but rather just noting that they are pretty certain about drawing that line at 100 with their error reporting as opposed to keeping that line fuzzy like it really is.

I cannot speak for SEOMoz, but I personally think one of the reasons they don't tell you what a good range to have is because a lot of it comes down to your site structure as well as authority. Telling people how many they can have based on domain authority, and knowing nothing of site structure, may lead to bad practices.
Like Marcus says above:
"Now, only you can determine what a reasonable amount is for your site. If all pages have tons of authority, then great, but if not, you may want to rethink your navigation. "
-
Thanks for the reply. I guess then my question is... why doesn't SEO moz give you a range of links appropriate for your domain authority? So for example if my domain authority is 35 what range of links would be appropriate... if its 65, likewise what amount of links would be considered permissible? The reason i say range is because i know its not a hard fast rule. Its just hard to see thousands of errors glaring at you every day when in fact they may not be affecting your domain authority like they say.

This was a rule from back in the day when Google's advice was not to have more than 100 links per page. The thing is, whilst this exact rule is not really the case now, there is a lot of good reason not to have a link to every page on every page.
If you have this kind of huge navigation
- is it good for users? Will they really navigate through 300 odd links?
- do you really want to evenly distribute page rank across all pages in the site and indicate that each page is equally important?
Also, if all links are not getting crawled, then there is a potential for page rank distribution to be messed up with certain pages not getting anything due to the behemoth navigation.
It's important to note though, this has never been a penalty issue, it is really just a bad internal SEO (and possibly usability) issue.
This is an interesting read:
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-many-links-is-too-manyAlso, you can see Google still recommend that you 'keep the links on a given page to a reasonable amount':
http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35769#1Now, only you can determine what a reasonable amount is for your site. If all pages have tons of authority, then great, but if not, you may want to rethink your navigation.
Hope this helps

The 100 links thing is more of a general recommendation than a "rule" . The answer could be different from site to site. Back in the day, this was a limit of 100 links crawled per page because Google put a cap on how much they would crawl in order to save some bandwidth.
In current times, this is more about how much domain authority your site has. If you have a lot of links, those are all going to be leeching your PR and they will all get less "juice" as the amount that flows over will keep getting divided.
Sites like Amazon and Zappos have a lot of authority and PR, therefore this is not as big of an issue to them.

"On-Page Report Card"- why is still showing " F grade" after introducing the keyword in page and title.
Hello, "On-Page Report Card"- why is still showing " F grade" after introducing the keyword in page and title. After changing the title and putting the keyword inside the title, in this section, "Exact Keyword Usage in Page Title", it shows the first title, without updating my changes. I have updated several times. In some cases worked, in this case doesn't. For example "online project management software" grades F, and "project management software" grades A, even if I've put the "online" word in title an so on. Now I have the same issue with "stock management software" which grades F. "stock management" grades A, even if i've put exactly "stock management software" thanks.

About how long does it take Google WMT to refresh stats on "Links to Your Site"?
About how long does it take Google WMT to refresh stats on "Links to Your Site"? We're dealing with an unnatural link/anchor phrase issue and I'm curious as to the "typical" time it takes for Google to recognize the links removal or Anchor Text change. Any refresh time ideas on OpenSiteExplorer or AHREFS as well would be a plus... Thanks! How Do I deal with duplicate page titles for pages on eCommerce site
Hi We have an ecommerce site selling physical products. There are a few areas where the products run into two pages. I have used canonical meta tags and next and prev meta tags too. Despite this SEOMOZ reports are still displaying these as warnings for duplicate page titles. An example would be /brand_name/range/ <link rel="next" href="/brand_name/range/?page=2" /> <link rel="<a class="attribute-value">canonical</a>" href="/band_name/range/"/> /brand_name/range/?page=2 <link rel="<a class="attribute-value">prev</a>" href="/brand_name/range/" /> <link rel="<a class="attribute-value">canonical</a>" href="/band_name/range/?page=2"/> Should I be doing something different?

How to Link build for our site
Hello, A client of mine has a site that gives advice to people. It's moderately competitive. It's a content site. Using Open Site explorer, I looked up competitor's top pages and backlinks, and there were things such as sites that were heavy on directories, sites heavily on editorial mension, sites on juicy topics that I don't want to cover, and the rest was pretty much junk. Just so that you know, I only link build with quality websites that look strong, long term, have a nice design, are high quality, and are not a directory (with a few exceptions) What's the standard way to link build with a site like this? We've got 7 articles of good content that is from me spending hours learning about the subject and using my skills as a life coach. Right now I'm just adding quality content and social media. I am not a top expert in the field, but I'm learning as much as possible. How do we link build?

Why do some sites have a higher Page Authority than Domain Authority in OSE??
Hi, I have noticed when using OSE and enter a domain you very often see a higher Page Authority than Domain Authority. If someone could explain why this would happen then I would be very grateful - its my current understanding that page authority would ALWAYS be LESS THAN Domain Authority but that is not always the case (I have seen cases where PA is more than 10 higher then DA) Here's an example where PA > DA http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links.html?site=www.primelocation.com Thanks

I need a tool/tools to extract keywords from say 50 sites in one niche and then check the rank tor those sites
This is for telemarketing of seo services I want to have some insight into an industry before I call them could this be done with the adwords keyword tool api and then exported to excel. It would also be nice to have data on backlinks say from seo moz opensite explorer.. Its just that the research you do before you even call a potential client is so time consuming and you can never really check to see how they are ranking for there main keywords manually. We are trying to automate as much of this initial research as possible... Any Idea's Thanks

Are there any good "geo location" seo tools.
Does anyone know of a good seo tool ( either in seomoz, or another website ) that will allow me to search google from different geo locations. For example, if I wanted to see how my company ranks for the term "computer repair" in redding california and sacramento california.
