301 redirect hell.... How do you de-commission an old site
-
Hi SEO experts:
We operate a vacation rental website and around 1 year ago moved to a different platform. Because our pages are arranged by location (what we refer to as Locales) we need to put 301 redirects for all the old locale pages. So for example:
www.example.com/__Skeggness.cfm redirects to www.example/com/vacation-rentals/locale/skeggness
But here's the problem: We can't seem to get Google to drop those old __{locale_name}.cfm pages... even after over 12-months of the new site going live!
Other clues we've noticed:
-
The old underscore URLs show up in our SERP sub-links
-
Sometimes google shows the new page title and description but attributes it to the __{locale_name}.cfm URL (aghh!!!)
One suggestion we received was to use the URL removal tool in Google WMT.... But given we have 1,000's of locales i don't see that as being affective.
Questions:
-
Any suggestions on how to get Google to drop these old URLs and use the new ones?
-
Is this situation hurting our SEO? Or do you think its benign... and I should just take a deep breath.... and relax at little more...

Hi AABAB,
This is pretty common. Unfortuneatly, Google can keep your old URLs around for a long time, especially pages without much authority.
And yes, this can have a negative impact on your SEO - especially if Google in situations where Google is indexing both the old and new URLs, and hasn't processed the 301.
Muhammed has a good suggestion. Create or put up a sitemap of your old URLs, and submit this sitemap to Google via Webmaster Tools. The idea is that Google will re-crawl these URLs, finally register the 301, and drop those pages from the index.
The URL removal tool would be a great option if all the pages are in the same directory, such as /old-pages/xxxxx, as Google allows you to remove entire directories in bulk. But unfortunately it looks like your URLs are all at the root, so this isn't an option.
Regardless, hope this helps! Best of luck with your SEO.

I hope you can do the same for this situation also.
All we needed to to do is make Google to visit your OLD URLs for a last time and let it know that its 301'd to another URL.
So keep all your OLD URLs in HTML sitemap (not XML) until Google cache it again.
Also check when is the last date Google cached your OLD URLs
-
Thanks Muhammed:
A little bit of a different situation i think as you're referring to moving from one domain to another domain right? In our situation we're keeping domain - but all the URLs are changed from one site structure to another.
Also, nothing of the old site remains. We can't really run the two platforms side-by-side under the same domain.

Hi
I had this same issue with one of my website before.
Steps I done
-
Created 301 from all the other pages except the home page
-
Created a temporary Home page/ Landing page for telling human visitors that my old domain is moved to newdomain.com.
3) Created a HTML Sitemap in OLD domain for all the current indexed OLD URLs (everything is already redirected to newdomain.com) and placed it in olddomain.com/sitemap.html
At this time the only available 202 pages in my OLD site is the 1) Home page & 2) The HTML sitemap page
-
Created/Edit the current XML sitemap (OLD Site). Included only the above two pages/links in the XML sitemap. Updated the XML sitemap from Web Master Tools.
-
Waited 1-2 months. All my URLs got removed from SERP
-
At this stage I created 301 redirect to the remaining Home & Sitemap Page
Done!
I'm not sure this is a best practice or not, But it worked for me. Consider others feedback before doing this

How to handle broken images on an old site post migration?
I am working with a client who migrated their site prior to starting their SEO work with us. In a crawl of broken backlinks, I found some old image files with links. Ideally, I would like to redirect to an appropriate image, but I have no way of knowing what the image was because the page it was on is now dead. Does anyone have a way to identify and handle broken image files from a site that has already been migrated?

Can I undo 301 redirects to purchase site
A website I am thinking of buying has 301 redirected all pages on his site to one page that explains the site is closing down. If I tell him to change the 301 to 302s will I be able to recover the old pages on the site and keep the authority, rankings and link power of the old pages and not the "Closing page"? Is all i have to do is undo the 301 redirects and everything will go back to how the site was before the 301s were in place? Or will I lose all the link power on individual pages because they already transferred to the "Closing page"? Thanks!

301 redirect for page 2, page 3 etc of an article or feed
Hey guys, We're looking to move a blog feed we have to a new static URL page. We are using 301 redirects but I'm unsure of what to regarding page 2, page 3 etc. of the feed. How do I make sure those urls are being redirected as well? For example: Moving FloridaDentist.com/blog/dental-tips/ to a new page url FloridaDentist.com/dental-tips. So, we are using a 301 on that old url to the new one. My questions is what to do with the other pages like FloridaDentist.com/blog/dental-tips/page/3. How do we make sure that page is also 301'd to the new main url?

.htaccess 301 Redirect Help! Specific Redirects and Blanket Rule
Hi there, I have the following domains: OLD DOMAIN: domain1.co.uk NEW DOMAIN: domain2.co.uk I need to create a .htaccess file that 301 redirects specific, individual pages on domain1.co.uk to domain2.co.uk I've searched for hours to try and find a solution, but I can't find anything that will do what I need. The pages on domain1.co.uk are all kinds of filenames and extensions, but they will be redirected to a Wordpress website that has a clean folder structure. Some example URL's to be redirected from the old website: http://www.domain1.co.uk/charitypage.php?charity=357 http://www.domain1.co.uk/adopt.php http://www.domain1.co.uk/register/?type=2 These will need to be redirected to the following URL types on the new domain: http://www.domain2.co.uk/charities/ http://www.domain2.co.uk/adopt/ http://www.domain2.co.uk/register/ I would also like a blanket/catch-all redirect from anything else on www.domain1.co.uk to the homepage of www.domain2.co.uk if there isn't a specific individual redirect in place. I'm literally tearing my hair out with this, so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

How do you find all of your 301 redirects?
I would like a full list of 301 redirects that we have on our site. Is there a way to export it? I tried Bing Webmaster tools and the list was incomplete. We use IIS. Any ideas?

301 redirect changed googles cached title tags ??
Hi, This is a new one to me ?! I recently added some 301 redirects from pages that I've removed from my site. Most of them just redirect to my home page, whilst a few redirect to appropriate replacement pages. The odd thing is that when I now search my keywords googles serp shows my website with a title that was on some of the old (now removed and redirected) pages. Is this normal? If so, how should I prevent this from happening? What is going on? The only reasons I set up the redirects was to collect any link juice from the old pages and prevent 404s. Should I remove the 301s? I fetched as google and submitted - to see if that updates the tags. (not been indexed yet) Any help would be appreciated. Kind Regards Tony

Very Puzzled --- 301 ReDirects Did Not Work - Lost Rankings - Any Thoughts?
This one has us stumped and frustrated, hopefully someone out there in SEOMoz land can give us some thoughts and/or suggestions on what's going on and how to remedy. This is a follow-up to a post I made awhile back. Here is an excerpt from the original post -- We currently have 3 different versions of our State Business-for-Sale listings pages - the versions are: Version 1 -- Preferred Version (Links on Homepage www.businessbroker.net) http://www.businessbroker.net/State/Vermont-Businesses_For_Sale.aspx Title = Vermont Business for Sale Ads - Vermont Businesses for Sale & Business Brokers - Sell a Business on Business Broker (I realize the title needs work) Version 2: (Links on this page: http://www.businessbroker.net/listings/blistings.ihtml) URL Prior to 301 change --- http://www.businessbroker.net/Businesses_For_Sale-State-Vermont.aspx Title = Vermont Business for Sale | 120 Vermont Businesses for Sale | BusinessBroker.net Version 3: (Links on this page: http://www.businessbroker.net/businessesforsale.ihtml) URL Prior to 301 change --- http://www.businessbroker.net/listings/business_for_sale_vermont.ihtml Title = Vermont Businesses for Sale at BusinessBroker.net - Vermont Business for Sale While the page titles and meta data are a bit different, the bulk of the page content (which is the listings rendered) are identical. OK, so we decided to test this on 5 of our State pages - I will use VERMONT in this discussion. We did 301 ReDirects on Version 2 and Version 3 -- they now redirect to Version 1 - we did the redirects and also changed the URL's on the pages. Prior to the change, we were ranking for keywords like "Vermont Business for Sale" and some other similar keywords -- on 1st page of Google --- now, we have lost our rankings big time. Did we do something wrong? I thought when you did 301's the majority of link juice was supposed to be preserved (losing 10% or so) -- this didn't happen in our case. Any help on what we can do would be appreciated. We only did 5 States as a test and also noticed big drops for Maine as well. These were both states where VERSION 2 was the page that was showing up in SERPs. Thanks in advance for wading through this long post and any help you can provide!! Matt
