Error msg 'Duplicate Page Content', how to fix?
-
Hey guys,
I'm new to SEO and have the following error msg 'Duplicate Page Content'. Of course I know what it means, but my question is how do you delete the old pages that has duplicate content?
I use to run my website through Joomla! but have since moved to Shopify. I see that the duplicated site content is still from the old Joomla! site and I would like to learn how to delete this content (or best practice in this situation).
Any advice would be very helpful!
Cheers,
Peter

Hi Fredrik,
Thanks for the follow up! I got the error msg from my SEOmoz dashboard. I just got it a couple days ago and the first crawl has been completed. I can also see in Google Webmaster a similar error msg. The old pages are on an older SSL secured site, but the domain is still the same.
For example, my old site was https://www.kellanapparel.com and now I don't use the SSL certificate and the website is hosted on a new platform (shopify) but with the same domain minus 's' (so now its http://www.kellanapparel.com). Maybe it's the case that the old SSL certificate is still valid and because the old content is associated on there it's still triggering? Would this make a difference?
Cheers,
Peter

Hi Peter
When you say you got the message 'Duplicate Page Content', is this from Google Webmaster Tools?
You mention an old page? Is that still active under different domain?
To avoid the duplicate content error you need to make sure that there is only ONE url for each piece of content. There are many ways of achieving this and here I only suggest a few:
Canonical tags
Try to use Canonical tags where ever you can. This can be implemented on both versions. The orgininal version should have tags pointing to itself. More info on excatly how to do this here:
http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/canonicalization
Remove old site from index
Make sure the old system is no longer indexed. Do this using either robots.txt or add a no index no follow metatag.
More on robots.txt here:

301 redirects
Try to use 301 redirects pointing any old page to the new page. You can also use this to point non www pages to always use www or the other way around. If you have old pages on a different system make sure these are not online. If they are still active on different domain, make sure to make 301 redirects to the new page.
More on this here:

You can find more info on how to avoid this error on this post:

Good luck and hope these tips can help you get started.

Best way to fix duplicate content issues
Another question for the Moz Community. One of my clients has 4.5k duplicate content issues. For example: http://www.example.co.uk/blog and http://www.example.co.uk/index.php?route=blog/blog/listblog&year=2017. Most of the issues are coming from product pages. My initial thoughts are to set up 301 redirects in the first instance and if the issue persists, add canonical tags. Is this the best way of tackling this issue?

"Moz encountered an error on one or more pages on your site" Error
I have been receiving this error for a while: "Moz encountered an error on one or more pages on your site" It's a Multi-Lingual Wordpress website, the robots.txt is set to allow crawlers on all links and I have followed the same process for other website I've done yet I'm receiving this error for this site.

Duplicate content on Product pages for different product variations.
I have multiple colors of the same product, but as a result I'm getting duplicate content warnings. I want to keep these all different products with their own pages, so that the color can be easily identified by browsing the category page. Any suggestions?

Are duplicate page titles fixed by the canonical tag
Google Web Master Tools is saying that some of my pages have duplicate page titles because of pagination. However, I have implemented the canonical tag on the paginated pages which I thought would keep my site from being penalized for duplicate page titles. Is this correct? Or does canonical tag only relate to duplicate content issues?

Duplicate Page content / Rel=Cannonical
My SEO Moz crawl is showing duplicate content on my site. What is showing up are two articles I submitted to Submit your article (article submission service). I put their code in to my pages i.e. " <noscript><b>This article will only display in JavaScript enabled browsers.</b></noscript> " So do I need to delete these blog posts since they are showing up as dup content? I am having a difficult time understanding rel=cannonical. Isn't this for dup content on within one site? So I could not use rel="cannonical" in this instance? What is the best way to feature an article or press release written for another site, but that you want your clients to see? Rewritting seem ridiculous for a small business like ours. Can we just present the link? Thank you.

Issue: Duplicate Pages Content
Hello, Following the setting up of a new campaign, SEOmoz pro says I have a duplicate page content issue. It says the follwoing are duplicates: http://www.mysite.com/ and http://www.mysite.com/index.htm This is obviously true, but is it a problem? Do I need to do anything to avoid a google penalty? The site in question is a static html site and the real page only exsists at http://www.mysite.com/index.htm but if you type in just the domain name then that brings up the same page. Please let me know what if anything I need to do. This site by the way, has had a panda 3.4 penalty a few months ago. Thanks, Colin

Switching ecommerce CMS's - Best Way to write URL 301's and sub pages?
Hey guys, What a headache i've been going through the last few days trying to make sure my upcoming move is near-perfect. Right now all my urls are written like this /page-name (all lowercase, exact, no forward slash at end). In the new CMS they will be written like this: /Page-Name/ (with the forward slash at the end). When I generate an XML sitemap in the new ecomm CMS internally it lists the category pages with a forward slash at the end, just like they show up through out the CMS. This seems sloppy to me, but I have no control over it. Is this OK for SEO? I'm worried my PR 4, well built ecommerce website is going to lose value to small (but potentially large) errors like this. If this is indeed not good practice, is there a resource about not using the forward slash at the end of URLS in sitemaps i can present to the community at the platform? They are usually real quick to make fixes if something is not up to standards. Thanks in advance, -First Time Ecommerce Platform Transition Guy
