Rankings going down down down
-
Hi guys,
I know this is a little open ended, but any advice/ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I launched a new site about 3 months ago (www.transfersandshuttles.co.za). I have had unique, useful articles written for it, and the site does provide a useful service. I have done a little link building and continue to do so. The site was making decent progress moving up the rankings for a few weeks, but now it just seems to get worse and worse.
I'm not looking for an entire site audit or strategy here, just if anything jumps out at you that seems very poor for seo, please let me know. Thanks so much,
Marc -
Hi,
If you are going to generate a lot of guides like that I'd definitely link them from the home page. Firstly from a menu item and then perhaps individual links to articles that are relevant to the user on the page they are viewing.
After that make sure you are generating links to those pages as well as the home page.
You could also put an alt tag on your logo header image.
Good luck

Hi Tina,
Thanks for the advice. The site has plenty of content (http://www.transfersandshuttles.co.za/sitemap/). Do you think I should start linking to it from the homepage?
-
Hi Matthew,
Thanks for the info.
Yes the content on the homepage has been shifted to the airport shuttle page (http://www.transfersandshuttles.co.za/airport-shuttles/) as the booking tool is dynamic and takes up the homepage.
So you reckon I should link from the homepage to each of the airport shuttle pages - for each airport? The reason for using posts and for putting them into categories is that we are hoping to expand out to not only offer airport shuttles, but wine tours, party buses etc.
We were targeting keywords such as: airport shuttles, airport shuttles johannesburg, cape town airport shuttles etc.
-
What keywords were you ranking for that are now dropping?
The home page is a little light on content. You may want to create some content on the home page to explain to the user what you offer, how you are different and how to use the site. You could perhaps also provide links from the home page directly to each of your airport guide content pages.
Consider whether you should make your shuttle guides 'pages' instead of 'posts' and keep them closer to root of the domain rather than in the shuttles category folder: e.g.
http://www.transfersandshuttles.co.za/shuttles/airport-shuttles-cape-town/
-> http://www.transfersandshuttles.co.za/airport-shuttles-cape-town/ (redirect if you create new URL)
Perhaps the airport shuttle guides could contain some information about the airports in question too? Where to catch shuttles, airlines that fly from there etc. Make a resource for your users.

It looks like you are almost spamming the same phrase by viewing your source I see this phrase 5 times on the home page. I would reduce it to once, or twice at most. I would also add some more text to the site as well.
<title>Airport Shuttles OR Tambo and Lanseria Airport

Product pages and rank brain
Hello, On product pages does the content matter or does the presentation and answering the user intent matter more ? I know for informational query content definitely matters but with rank brain, I am thinking that for pages where your present product content doesn't matter as much ? Am I right ? Thank you,

Ranking dropped after changing title tag
I recently changed my company's site homepage title tag to make it start with our target keyword. The page was originally at page #7 or #8 and dropped to page #17 directly after I changed the page title. Is this normal? Is it's a temporary drop or should I change it back to the previous title.

Drop in Mobile & Tablet Rankings
We have pretty strong rankings and have done since we launched our business in 2004. Over the past two months, we have seen a strong growth in rankings after a bit of a drip last year, however over the past week we have seen a significant drop off in organic traffic. Further analysis has shown that this is coming from mobile/tablet traffic, as the desktop traffic has been fairly consistent. There does appear to be a drop (across all main keywords) on mobile/tablet, but again there is no noticeable drop in desktop rankings. I am obviously aware Google treats these differently, but we can find no obvious reasons why this might have occurred. It is almost as if some sort of penalty has been applied on mobile/tablet only. There are no warnings or obvious problems in webmaster tools and our mobile/tablet site is mobile optimised. At a bit of a loss and would appreciate a bit of guidance in where you think we should start to understand what is causing this and how we should go about correcting it. Thanks in advance for the help.

Does having shorter URLs help with rankings?
Hello here.I own an e-commerce website (virtualsheetmusic.com), and some of our most important category pages have pretty long URLs. Here is an example: http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/downloads/Indici/Violin.html I am evaluating the possibility to shorten URLs like the above to something like: http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/violin/ But since it is going to pretty hard and time consuming (considering the custom system we have in place on that site), I am trying to find out if it really matters and worth doing it from a SEO stand point. I am aware that from a user prospective shorter URLs are preferable, and we plan to pursue a better URL architecture on our website in the near future just for that, but this question, at the moment, should be strictly related to SEO. Any thoughts on this topic are very welcome!

Why is my ranking not improving???
Our site is about 4 months old now, although the domain is older. We are adding fresh new content, building good facebook/twitter/Goolge+ and undertaking good PR - but our ranking does not seem to be improving at all. Have I missed something obvious???? Thanks.

Why did my rankings drop?
Hi all, In July I started to re-energise my link building efforts by getting a proper campaign together to build links. Despite building about 20 new links my traffic has actually fallen. Here a a breakdown of what happen: 1)Late June I noticed my toolbar page rank up at about PR4 which, despite only being a small part of the algo, was nice to see. Early July I started my link building campaign by getting together a massive list of potential link partners by using Open Site Explorer on my competitors sites. 3)Because I'm a bit pressed for time I decided to go for the easier links first. I sorted my link list by Domain Authority and started to list on high DA directories used by my competitors. I listed on about 20 of these directories. I also livened up an old links page I'd previously hidden from the SE's because I was planning to do a bit of Link exchanging too. A few days after I started building links from these directories I noticed my traffic start to drop off gradually. I also noticed the toolbar PR go down to PR3. I decided to stop at 20 submissions because it looked like this was effecting traffic. I also removed the links page I'd livened up which produced a temporary improvement in traffic but it's since gone on to get a bit worse. Traffic is now down by about 10% on when I started buying submissions to directories. I must add that during this period we have also been taking on new clients which, as a a real estate listing site, means we put loads of content on our site for the client. That content is also on the clients website and on other competitors sites. So there would be lot's of a content that appears elsewhere on the net. Not really sure which of the two has caused the problem and not really sure how to progress. Do I remove the links on the directories? Do I wait for this newly added content to bed down so that new fresh can take it's place in our results which we rank from? Any help would be appreciated.

How does changing hosting affect rankings?
I have a hosting account that is ancient. So is it's CPanel, its way of operation (I have to call in to change the zone file), and its hardware and software (It can't even recognize Wordpress as a user so i have to change permissions to change anything.) I plan on moving the site, but I want to prepare for any changes that may happen. Currently the site ranks between #1 or 3 for quite a few very valuable words. It is also in season for this business. I know changing hosting data or servers can cause google to temporarily drop rankings. Does anyone have any experience with this or now how long the faded rankings can last? Or if its even true?
