Subfolder v Root Domain for attaining ranking
-
Hi,
We are working with a site that we can refer to as:
It has a subsection of our clients services at www.clientsbrand.com.au/keyword
The client has now decided that this subsection is in fact the most important thing they should be trying to rank for. A large amount of the content that is already existing under clientsbrand.com.au/topic1 /topic2 /topic3 etc would fit naturally under clientsbrand.com.au/keyword/topic1 etc
The root domain is currently not ranking for the keyword they wish to target. I am planning on moving a lot of this content to the subfolder to try and boost that silo and get things going for that keyword.
As long as we 301 the old URL's to their corresponding new position are there any issues any of you see with doing this?
I am worried there may be some traps for young players I have not considered.
Thanks in advance for any responses.

Thanks Hellemans, you think things should be ok but it's always good to get an outside opinion
-
We're in Wordpress, so thankfully easy to manage.

One 'trap' to consider is the site structure and publishing process. If your client's site has a CMS backend that lets you easily categorize pages, then no problem. If, however, publication is done manually, creating new folders for every new keyword can quickly become a maintenance hassle.
Another positive effect of adding the new level is the option to create a new category page at that level that is 100% optimized for said keywords. Moreover, your topic pages can now benefit from keyword focused breadcrumbs that include the category level.
-
You should be ok doing it this way. Make sure you set all the correct 301's. I've done it this way multiple times, sometimes if I had a ranking it would fall but be back a bit stronger over time (depending on the authority of the domain).
Good luck.

Ranking at 2 and 3 for a Desired Keyword - But Missing #1
I have a keyword I usually rank #1 for "Maui Beach Wedding" that I am now ranking 2 and 3 for with two separate pages below: My home page: https://simplemauiwedding.net and the below internal page I am linking from my home page that I really want that term to rank for. https://simplemauiwedding.net/beach-wedding-packages What is the best way to pass the authority from one to another for this particular keyword. I want this URL https://simplemauiwedding.net/beach-wedding-packages to rank for the term, not my home page which has a link pointing to this page from my home page which I was hoping would point the authority to it for the term. What are some other ways to signal which page I prefer Google to pick up for the keyword I want to rank for? Thanks

Is adding video to my homepage a ranking signal
Just had a lengthy chat with an SEO guy and one of the points bought up was that video on the homepage is a definite signal these days and the bots read the metas better than ever. I'm not sure about this, I do think that videos are a thing that improves the user experience but to rank? If it was to rank would I embed a YouTube video as its owned by Google, Vimeo for the quality or self-host but cause me to have a heavy page. I'm a bit lost here and would appreciate some guidance.

Does no-follow for pages affect site ranking?
Hey, I have a question. On my site, it's divided into the main site and the blog is in a subfolder of same domain. Within the main site (same domain), there are MANY checkout pages and other internal pages we use though all with "NO FOLLOW" on each. Despite it having "NO FOLLOW", will it affect our blog rankings in any way or domain ranking?"

Why is my key word rank so horrible?
I've been with seomoz for a couple of months now. I've been working hard trying to rank for the key word "kayak fishing" on my site yakangler.com. My onpage report for my home page is an A, my moztrust rank is higher than my competitors. I don't have the most links but I don't have the fewest either. Why am I ranking so horribly. Last I checked I wasn't on the first 50 pages for Google search. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
