Is it better to have URLs of internal pages that are geo-targeted or point geo-targeted links to the homepage?
-
For example...
Having links that are geo-targeted and pointing to this URL
or
Not having any geo-targeted internal pages and just having links that are geo-targeted and pointing to this URL
Eventually the site will be a national campaign, so I am concerned about having so many geo-targeted internal pages.
Thanks in advance!

Actually I created a separate thread for this question. I figured I would keep it organized.

I'm not sure what you mean - are you asking about keyword variations for ecommerce?
-
Great, thanks for detailed explanation! Just one last scenario is what if it is an e-commerce site and you can't have location dedicated pages, only product pages?
-
Duplicate content: If you're doing each location page correctly, you'll be minimizing the duplicate content by creating unique content on each page. If it's all duplicate content, that's a strike against how you implemented it, not the strategy of having multiple location pages.
Dedicated Page vs. Homepage: If you're trying to target "nyc real estate" you're going to absolutely need a page dedicated to that keyword. Your homepage will only suffice if you're only targeting NYC. If you're targeting beyond that, you'll need a dedicated page, bottom line. It's simply to competitive of a term to try and do it any other way.
Anchor Text: Don't worry about anchor text so much. Build branded links to your homepage, and get whatever links you can to those subpages, both with optimized anchor text and without. Subpages are great for getting exact and partial match anchor text because it's often the best way to describe that page, which isn't the case with the homepage.
Basic Keyword Variations: Regarding variations such as "nyc real estate", "real estate nyc", and "real estate new york city", Google is pretty good at filtering through simple variations like that. Pick the one that gets the most exact traffic in the adwords keyword tool, and then include the other variations on the page in a non-keyword-stuffing manner.

Hey Kane,
Thanks for the response! This question is very much related to this other question I posted, and the response I left to another member there directly affects what you are referring to here. If you can please check out my response there and give me your thoughts on it I would greatly appreciate it.

If you're targeting one location, you can probably work with the homepage.
More than one location? I'd use specific pages for each location.
Regarding too many pages - I'd argue that you only have too many if they have duplicate content. If each geo-targeted page has content that is unique to that city or area, I think you're in the clear. That said, if it's implemented in a way that looks spammy, then you have too many...

Why not both? If you are creating a valuable resource that is.

Should I disavow links from pages that don't exist any more
Hi. Im doing a backlinks audit to two sites, one with 48k and the other with 2M backlinks. Both are very old sites and both have tons of backlinks from old pages and websites that don't exist any more, but these backlinks still exist in the Majestic Historic index. I cleaned up the obvious useless links and passed the rest through Screaming Frog to check if those old pages/sites even exist. There are tons of link sending pages that return a 0, 301, 302, 307, 404 etc errors. Should I consider all of these pages as being bad backlinks and add them to the disavow file? Just a clarification, Im not talking about l301-ing a backlink to a new target page. Im talking about the origin page generating an error at ping eg: originpage.com/page-gone sends me a link to mysite.com/product1. Screamingfrog pings originpage.com/page-gone, and returns a Status error. Do I add the originpage.com/page-gone in the disavow file or not? Hope Im making sense 🙂

Rel canonical for partner sites - product pages only or also homepage and other key pages?
Hello there Our main site is www.arenaflowers.com. We also run a number of partner sites (eg: http://flowershop.cancerresearchuk.org/). We've relcanonical'd the products on the partner site back to the main (arenaflowers.com) site. eg: http://flowershop.cancerresearchuk.org/flowers/tutti_frutti_es_2013 rel canonicals back to: http://www.arenaflowers.com/flowers/tutti_frutti_es_2013). My question: Should we also relcanonical the homepage and other key pages on partner sites back to the main arenaflowers website too? The content is similar but not identical. We don't want our partner sites to be outranking the original (as is the case on kw flower delivery for example). (NB this situation may be complicated by the fact we appear to have an unnatural link penalty on af.com (and when we did an upgrade a while back, the af.com site fell out of the index altogether due to some issues with our move to AWS.) We're getting professional SEO advice on this but wondered what the Moz community's thoughts were.. Cheers, Will

Different URLS for our multi language pages caused penalty?
Hi all, We have a website www.phoneboxlanguage.com with 4 different language versions (Spanish, French, Italian, German). We have all the different versions on totally different URLS. E.G the French URL is www.cours-telephone-anglais.com. Recently this month we saw a huge drop in SERPS for all the 'foreign' language pages. This had happened before for the Spanish and French, which we put down to keyword density issues, so created new URLS for those pages. However now all 4 foreign pages have dropped. Could this be due instead to a penalty for duplicate sites? The content is obviously different due to different languages, but the coding and templates for the sites are the same. How can we find out this is the case and what should we do? I was thinking after some research on the forum to create subfolders in the original (phoneboxlanguage.com) and then create 301 redirects, from the old dropped sites, or would their penalties be bad for our original site, if this were the case? We are obviously very keen to not further damage the site and the original site which remains o.k. Many thanks for your kind help. Quime.

Settle an argument re first links from a page? Anyone?
If we accept "the first link from a page to another is the one that transfers anchor text and PR" - does that then apply just the same for internal linking as it does with linking from domain to domain?

Why was my homepage kicked out from results, but not my internal pages?
My domain's homepage has been ranking 1st position for an specific term for about 8 months. Our domain got hacked and it took just one day to make the website right again. A week after our homepage didn't appear anymore in Google results, it isn't even indexed. However the rest of our internal pages keep being indexed and ranking as usual. How can I make my homepage appear again in the results? Is there a way to speed up this process? Will it be in the same position as before, or will it have some sort of penalization for the hacking?
