We have 5 postions on page 2 in a google search, but none on page 1\. How can we fix this?
-
For one of our most important key phrases we have 5 listings on page 2 but none on page 1. We are an ecommerce company, the key phrase we're trying for is a Top Level Category name for us, so the 5 links we have on googles second page for the key phrase (in order) are the appropriate top level category page, the sites home page and than three sub categories of that top level category. So while that all makes sense, can't we convince google to concentrate all that link power/juice into just the top level category page? Hopefully bumping it to first page rank? The 5 ranks are 11-15

Since panda and penguin is actually very common see article below

No.
You'll often see the same domain appear in multiple positions, even on page one, for the same KWs.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all your responses. I'm really just looking to see if anyone has experience with a situation like this? I would assume Google would prefer one top level domain link per SERP? Is that generally the case?

Margaret,
Have you done the simple things yet-
Each of those 5 KWphrases did you make sure to add very concise content to those pages use addition kwphrases?
Did you create a blog series reflecting around those kwphrases that link out to a higher authority
Did you create some social spin ( even though I think this only partly works) cross posting those kwphrases with links to site
As a site owner, we do a lot of thinks to help grow and move kwphrases, we see real results that put checks in the bank with the above- good luck.

You need to up your seo game- without seeing the term and site nobody can really tell you what to focus on. But some great partial anchor text links from great site should help

Hi Margaret,
Have you tested rankings with different geography settings, and depersonalized?
What kind of links do you have pointing at these pages?
Does the homepage appear in SERPs with sitelinks (category pages, for example) when it appears in brand-name search?
I don't know your situation, so this is a best guess: I'd work on getting some more authority and relevance through some new (relevant & authoritative) links, aim them at your most valuable pages, and give it some time. Depending on the KW difficulty, it might take a few links, it might take many. Impossible to be certain without knowing the full story competitor landscape and backlink profiles.

Yes you can 301 redirect all the sub pages to the home page. Only thing is you will be left with one page rather than 5 pages. This will transfer most of the juice to one page. i would not recommend doing this for ranking purposes. If you want to rank you need to earn it, create content that people are looking for or will be interested in, entertained.

Google Drop
I started using SEOMOZ due to a sudden and huge drop in Google for two main keywords (hair bows and baby headbands). Our site (BloomingBows.com) has held a top three spot for years with these words and then in the last few months has dropped down on the first page and now they are completely off the charts. Is there any insight as to why? Also, we have been very active using the data from here in the last week or so to clean up and improve anything listed, but I am still seeing keywords drop into the 40 - 60 position and our traffic is drying up. Starting to panic and wondering if I am missing something or going about this in the wrong way. ANY insight is appreciated at this point!! Thank you!!

Opinions please on Duplicate page titles & too many on-page links warnings.-
Hello folks, I'm a total SEO newbe but totally enjoying
On-Page Optimization | | CSC
using SEOmoz to learn more. We have ecommerce sites and the 1st crawl flags – as appears typical too many on-page links. We display up to 20 products (each with three links!)
and I’m trying to push to have fewer but meeting resistance from colleagues.
We have links duplicated all over the site believing it eases navigation. My question is just how critical is the number of products displayed
and the resulting volume of links to SEO results? Also we currently have collections of products displayed
across several pages which of course have the same page title and this is flagged
as a duplication error. I wonder if product auto-scrolling help as this means only a certain number of products are displayed at one time on one page thus reducing links and the need for duplicate page titles? My superiors are resisting change (perhaps nervous of spoiling
what already works) and I need to know where to direct my persuasive powers! Many thanks in anticipation, Spence0 -
How to properly handle these search results pages
I work with Afternic.com and they are restructuring their website. The current search results pages generate tons of duplicate content, but it's not so clear to me what the best solution. Navigation links to all of these pages which are exactly the same and do not generate content on the specific url indicated. The results all display on variations of the url names.php http://www.afternic.com/names.php?feat=1 http://www.afternic.com/names.php?cls=1 Then they have this page with categories: http://www.afternic.com/categories.php And when you select a category, it generates sort results of names.php Now because there is no real content on names.php I'm wondering if all these url variations ought to have a rel canonical tag for names.php or if they should be blocked. If blocked, it seems we're stuck with a page that doesn't display any content. Thanks for any suggestions.

2 canonical tags on the same page
When using the 'on-page optimizer' tool, I continue to get the same recommendation on every page to only use 1 canonical tag on the page. I'm not sure why there are 2 tags on each page in the first place so I don't know how to remove the one that's not needed. Our site is on a WP blog and a sample page to view the source code would be: http://www.shilohstreet.com/blog/is-flipping-houses-smart-real-estate-investing.html Does anyone know why this is happening, how to fix it and/or if I should even be concerned with it? Thanks!

Would it be bad to change the canonical URL to the most recent page that has duplicate content, or should we just 301 redirect to the new page?
Is it bad to change the canonical URL in the tag, meaning does it lose it's stats? If we add a new page that may have duplicate content, but we want that page to be indexed over the older pages, should we just change the canonical page or redirect from the original canonical page? Thanks so much! -Amy
