Sitemap for webshop?
-
Had a client today who contacted me regarding having no sitemap on his webshop (with about 2000 products). He told me that his design company, who had made his webshop, adviced him against putting up a site since it would be giving google to much information at once, hence making it stop visiting his webshop as much?
Well my first through was -okay this must be some kind of joke.
But with seo, there are always something, now and then, that still surprises you, So are there anyone else here, who could share some info on this? -
My thoughts exactly, never heard of any bad effects of having a sitemap if you don't mind your pages getting indexed. But glad to hear it wasn't just me who had missed a chapter in the big book of SEO.

I assume you mean an XML sitemap (in Google Webmaster Tools)? The only information that really contains is the URLs on the site. So, if, for some reason, you don't want Google to know about the pages on your site, then I guess a sitemap is a bad idea. If you want your pages to be indexed, though, you're shooting yourself in the foot.
I will say that I think it's important to focus your sitemap and definitely don't use non-canonical URLs or pages you don't want indexed. It should be a "clean" list, so to speak.
Some people don't think you should have a GWT account at all, but I find that to be pure paranoia in 99% of cases. If you're going to rank on Google, they need to know about your site. Even if you're pursuing black-hat tactics, I don't see what information the root account or sitemap would contain that would harm you.

Which version of the homepage on the sitemap?
We have been wondering this for a while now. When we build our sitemaps, or when the yoast plugin does in WP we are often left with www.yourdomain.co.uk/ and www.yourdomain.co.uk/index.html in our sitemaps. Surely it isn't healthy to have both in the sitemap. Which one should we take out? Thanks

Is having this sitemap worthwhile?
I know that a sitemap can help SEs to find and index pages, and also deal with canonicalisation issues, but I have a client who is insisting that we build a sitemap containing links to every possible category on a huge ecommerce site. We already have tabbed modules that allow users to sort by brand, product type, location etc, plus a strong search function that allows them to select multiple options. I'm worried that a sitemap stuffed with keywords like "Product A by brand B in Location C", "Product A by brand B in Location D" etc. will just seem spammy and do more harm than good. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks.

Transition between a blog to e-commerce webshop, will my domain "lose" authority
Hi Seomoz'ers, Currently I am analyzing the best possible strategy which situation is as follow: I am having a blog with a great EMD about a specific product we are selling. The blog is currently ranking in position 1 for different keyword phrases. However I would like to make a switch from the current Wordpress blog to Magento webshop. Simply because the product should be sold through a professional webshop with many related products. Only the homepage of mydomainname.com is optimized. I am affraid I will lose my #1 ranking when I put my webstore online on this domainname. Most likely I will lose my PA and keep my DA. Which actions should I take in order to keep the ranking in Google position 1 with the new webstore? My best possible option I guess: 1. Replace the Wordpress blog with the Magento webstore and optimize the homepage with on-page seo of the webstore for the targeted keywords. Will this work? As the backlinks I've built are pointing all to the domainname.com (homepage). Thanks in advance. Any more suggestions are welcome 🙂

How could I avoid the "Duplicate Page Content" issue on the search result pages of a webshop site?
My webshop site was just crawled by Roger, and it found 683 "Duplicate Page Content" issues. Most of them are result pages of different product searches, that are not really identical, but very similar to each other. Do I have to worry about this? If yes, how could I make the search result pages different? IS there any solution for this? Thanks: Zoltan
