Subdomains and duplicate content issue
-
Hi, a website I know of, let's call it Americanizedwine.com, is undergoing development. It includes a detailed map of hundreds wine growers right across the Americas, with all the map grower icons / names pointing to unique pages within Americanizedwine.com (info pages with online retail functionality where wine grower wants to sell direct through this website).
This website is teaming up with wine magazines / food blogs etc., offering them subdomains of Americanzedwine.com - e.g. [magazinename].americanizedwine.com - to carry within their own websites > duplicating the map and all the wine grower/retail pages from Americanwizedwine.com website, including meta data, etc (hmmmm!).
Could you simply use some method to simply tell Google that the mother website is elsewhere, and this subdomain information is simply duplicate copy? Would that suffice I’m wondering? Or will the solution here require deeper exploration?

Thanks Oleg and Matt for the really helpful feedback

What Oleg said - the pages should be no-index. They aren't for search engines, they're for the magazines. I wouldn't necessarily set canonical for all those pages because I'm not a fan of having 50 pages say their real link is something else. In your situation, just no-index anything that's for people, not SEs.
-
Hmm, you should either set a canonical url to the main site or noindex the other pages.
Since your main site already has all the information, the other subdomains won't rank for any terms anyways and you may be hit with duplicate content problems. Setting a canonical link will prevent the subdomains from ranking and any links built to that page will help your main site rank better. On the downside, the subdomains wont rank.

What is the danger of integrating different affiliate program widgets far under our core content?
We have pages with lots of unique content that are ranking very well in google.
Affiliate Marketing | | lcourse
I am now considering to add towards the end of the pages widgets from the booking.com affiliate program and also from the affiliate program of two other accommodtion sites. These affilliate widgets would be placed far beyond our core content in the bottom 15% of the page. Each widget will contain a large number of links to the different accomodation options that booking.com or others offer. In our context this information would be indeed very useful for our visitors. Shall I be concerned that our google rankings may suffer due to google perceiving our site as less quality (or google misinterpreting our intent to generate traffic to affiliate programs) ? If google rankings would be suffering, is this something we would normally see in a week (most of our pages are crawled daily by google) and then recover in a week when we would remove the widgets or would this generally be something that would affect the ranking over the course of a month or more? Shall I be concerned abou link dillution since my pages would now have a lot of links pointing to the affiliate sites, which could devalue my internal links? Any thoughts?0 -
Affiliate links and parameters creating duplicate page titles
Hi, we have an affiliate system and use rel=**canonical **to canonicalise them to the right link. Still, we see those links creating duplicate page titles, in Moz crawl and in Google search console. How are we supposed to treat those links so they do not create duplicate content? Thanks for your help!

Duplicate tracking of Affiliate and Organic orders
I started diving into the over lap between Organic and affiliate orders and can see that on average about 10% of my organic orders get tracked as both affiliate and organic (meaning i am paying affiliate commissions on them). I want to be able to better account for the different types of order and where they are coming from. My question is simply if anyone has any ideas as to how better to figure out if those orders should be canceled on the affiliate end or if there is a better way in analytics to see where the order is actually getting attributed to through some type of goal or advanced set up or something (the download of orders from organic that I compared to the affiliate ones was taken from Ecommerce > Transactions > Medium (Organic) then I compared that to the order numbers from the affiliate company I am using). Hope this makes sense and thanks for any information that can help with this!

Merchant´s data feed for affiliates is the same content as their own website...
Hi Some advice appreciated. Started working on a site and found out that they are giving their unique content to their affiliates (an XML feed so appearing on another domain). In this case, if they want to provide the data like that, how can we protect ourselves? Should we use author tags in our html, is that necessary? Is there any fix other than "stop doing that and give them different content"? Thanks

How do the engines look at pages populated using content from an affiliate site?
We are building out a section of our site using an affiliate partnership in the travel space. How would you suggest organizing the content so we do not get penalized for duplicate content? Do you suggest not suing the content at all?

Duplicate versions of pages on my site are getting indexed by Google...I think...
Hello, Our site has a very high bounce rate, which in part is down to a slightly old fashioned design, and also because we are a retailer and I imagine many visitors are simply quickly comparing prices and then leaving. However, having had a look in Google Analytics, I think that there is another issue that is contributing to a very high bounce rate. When I look in Content > Top Content, and order the pages in order of Bounce Rate, high to low, there are hundreds of instances of pages with just one or two visits in the last month, and a 100% bounce rate. The links are the same as our home page or pages on our website, but with extra letters and numbers at the end of the url. We have an affiliate scheme, which provides our affiliates with unique codes for the products they want to link to, and my guess is that these urls are getting indexed. I've looked at a few other links, and they go to translated versions of a page from our website, generated by Google. Other urls seem to have been generated by search results from our own search on the website. What worries me is that there are lots and lots of versions of the same page, with slightly different urls. I am by no means an SEO expert - I work for a very small company and am basically learning as I go - but I know that duplicate content is bad news. If the pages were on our own site, we could use 301s to redirect, but what about translated versions, or urls generated by affiliate schemes, or search results? Many thanks, Sophy

Any issues with a simple php redirect?
Hi, I have used a simple php redirect for one site that it used for an affiliate link. Always used it, cant remember the exact reason I did but most likely to make the url pretty 🙂 On the crawl stats of this domain it shows as a 302 redirect - does this have any issues? What do people recommend for affiliate links? Cloaking? Tracking? There are a number of wordpress plugins available that seem to be aimed at affiliate links, any recommendations? I assume that they will still be classed as 302's. Any advice gratefully received. Thanks Jason
