Repeating brand name on all subcategory levels
-
As part consolidating our site navigation, I have an opportunity to change how we name url s on child pages. At present, I think there are 2 problems that could be fixed.
1.As you drill down, the brand name is not part of each url.
2. Also, the urls show abreviations that are not customer friendly. Are these worth changing? I am redirecting pages whether I change the naming or not.
Below is my current navigation and below that the changed navigation I am considering.
Many thanks to all that look and share their thoughts.

This is an e-commerce site with on hand products and similar products which are custom ordered from a catalog:
Current Navigation Drill Down:
/ctgy/brandname.html
/ctgy/brandname-onh.html
/ctgy/onhmir.htmlthen the specific products:
/onhmir/30322-onhmir92_741.html
/onhmir/30324-onhmir96_743.htmlThe catalog has more products and so has 1 extra level of child category pages:
ctgy/brandname.html
/ctgy/brandname-cat.html
/ctgy/brandname-catmir.html
/ctgy/design1catmir.html
/ctgy/design2catmir.htmlthen the specific products:
/catmir/30322-catmirhappy.html
/catmir/30324-catmirhappy.htmlChanged Naming Under Consideration:
On pages above the product page, (category pages) spell out all words and place the brand name in the parent url. The result would be:/ctgy/brandname.html
/ctgy/brandname-on-hand.html
/ctgy/brandname-on-hand-mirror.htmlthen the specific products:
/brandname-on-hand-mirror/30322-onh-mir92_741.html
/brandname-on-hand-mirror/30324-on-hand-mir96_743.htmlThe catalog has more products and so has 1 extra level of child category pages:
/ctgy/brandname-catalog.html
/ctgy/brandname-catalog-mirror.html
/ctgy/brandname-catalog-mirror-style1.html
ctgy/brandname-catalog-mirror-style2.htmlthen the specific products:
/brandname-catalog-mirror-style1/30322-cat-mirhappy.html
/brandname-catalog-mirror-style1/30324-cat-mirhappy.html -
Thank you Doug-
This site sells work by 100s of artisans under a url like smalltownartisans.com. The "/brandname" is one of our better know artisans with a wide range of products. So it is not repeated in the url
Do you think the "smalltownartisans.com". brand should be included in the page titles along with the artisan-brandname? And could you expand on the simple ways to ttest what works best?
Thanks again for all you your comments

Hiya,
Your full URL also contains your domain name so if your brand name is included there then it's going to be repeated. So with URLs like:
http://www.brandname.com/brandname-category/product.html
You're repeating the brand name and pushing the bit of the URL that people are interested in increasingly to the right. The small, if any, increase in relevancy for your product keywords is going to be lost...
Personally, I would make my url structure as concise and as meaningful as possible (avoiding abreviations if at all possible.)
Does it makes sense to the prospective visitor. Does it help convince them that they're going to find what they're looking for? Does it help with the "Am I in the right place" question?
A bit of keyword research, and maybe taking a look at your own site-search (if you've got it on your site) will help reveal what people are really looking for. (Are they looking for the materials or the rooms they're going to place the items in? Bathroom mirrors over wooden framed for example.)
Make sure your URLs aren't so long that they make it difficult to share (email, social etc)
You may want to think more about the inclusion of your brand name when it comes to your page title.
Standard practice for title usually is along these lines:
Primary Keyword - Secondary Keyword | Brand Name
or
Brand Name | Primary Keyword and Secondary KeywordSee: http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/title-tag
Even then, I would think about the value, and perception of your brand name when included in the titles (it's an easy thing to test). If you've got a well recognised brand, with lots of authority/trust then having the brand name in the Title can make a big difference.
That said, it's common for businesses to be a little optimistic when it comes to the value of the brand. It might be better to use the space in the title to include the benefits of your products, something to differentiate them or some emotion rather than the brand name.
Hope this helps,

Bing result title is displaying a competitors name
When searching "Cambridge Savings Bank" which is the specific name of a bank in Bing the search results return with them as Number one with the correct URL. The issue is Bing has titled the search result "East Cambridge Savings Bank" (which is another entity all together) and still has the correct www.cambridgesavings.com URL. So basically Bing is putting another corporation's name on our website. This issue only is in Bing. Any idea how to correct this? 2.png 1.png

Top domain(s) not at all showing up for branded keywords
Hey guys! Hope you're all doing well. I need your smart brains for a problem the company I work for is currently facing in the realm of SEO. They wanted to hire someone to find the problem, but I thought I would reach out to you guys, first, to at least try and narrow down the long list of things we could look at/investigate. I put the info (briefly) on 3 slides, and would really appreciate any and all insights you can offer me: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/12d0YH7BNdCIpJ86d95uBOtOWphWQ3NB1kwDYeOzIt-U/edit#slide=id.g19145c9fa5_0_0 Thank you in advance!

Questions on switching domain name of my site
Hey guys, I purchased a domain name on May 1st and have been running my site on it since then. At the time when I added the domain name to the shopping cart, I felt that it was the best domain name a human could possibly come up with. But now, after two months, I am not so sure about it. And that means I am thinking of getting a new domain name and redirecting the old domain to the new one. Give that the domain is only two months old, there is not much to lose. However, my domain name does have some valuable backlinks, and has built some credibility in the eyes of search engines. According to MOZ Open Site Explorer, its Domain Authority is 10 and Page Authority (homepage) is 20. It's not much, but I fear that if I switch the domain name, I will reset the clock and the new domain name will have to earn the rankings from scratch That said, after searching this forum, I come across articles like this one from google and this 2012 article from MOZ that gave me some confidence. The MOZ article is from 2102, and there have been several changes since then. Is there an updated version of that article, or another legit article on the internet that you can point me to? As you can tell, I want to be more than sure that we don't take any hit during the migration process. Also want to mention that the site is on WordPress -- in case that is relevant. Thank you for your help.

For a web agency, can the same WHOIS registrant name information between different domain names hurt SEO?
Hi, I own a web agency and we often register domain names for our clients. When we register those, I just realized that we always use the same registrant name and other whois (ex : Louis-Philippe Dea), for all domain names. Can this hurt the SEO of our clients? Hope that you'll understand when I'm trying to say in spite of my bad english :S Thanks 🙂

Brand domain not in 1st page
Hi, I've made an e-commerce (drsebagh.it) for the italian division of the brand Dr Sebagh. Now if I search the brand query on google.it (https://www.google.it/search?q=dr+sebagh&oq=dr+sebagh&aqs=chrome.0.69i59l3j0l3.1352j0j4&sourceid=chrome&espv=210&es_sm=91&ie=UTF-8) the site is around the 3rd serp. I can't find where problems are. No duplicate content (as my client says and Copyscape Free seems to confirm that) also Webmaster Tools doesn't signal errors... Can someone helps me to do a quickly check?

How to verify a page-by-page level 301 redirect was done correctly?
Hello, I told some tech guys to do a page-by-page relevant 301 redirect (as talked about in Matt Cutts video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1lVPrYoBkA) when a company wanted to move to a new domain when their site was getting redesigned. I found out they did a 302 redirect on accident and had to fix that, so now I don't trust they did the page-by-page relevant redirect. I have a feeling they just redirected all of the pages on the old domain to the homepage of the new domain. How could I confirm this suspicion? I run the old domain through screaming frog and it only shows 1 URL - the homepage. Does that mean they took all of the pages on the old domain offline? Thanks!

New EMD update effected my mom's legit author page? From page 1 in SERP to nowhere for her name
I think my mom's site, MargaretTerry.com was hit by this update for her name "Margaret Terry". Went from bouncing around the first page on google.com and .ca all the time to nowhere on the index. The results are now very strange, a mix of Youtube, linked in, and small book stores that she has done events at recently to promote her first book. I was checking after some of my SEO buddys were freaking out about their EMD's getting hit on Sunday. She is an aspiring author with a book coming out this month. There is obviously no ads or spam content on the site... I have never done SEO for it either except a bit of on page I guess. It sucks that people might be grabbing her book soon and when they Google her name nothing shows up. This couldn't have really happened at a worse time. Not to mention the hours spent building the site to her liking, free of charge of course 🙂 Is there anyone I can contact there to help me out? Shouldn't and EMD that is someones name still rank when you search their name?

Does part of a keyword phrase need to be repeated in a sub folder?
I have a page that targets "web design" at /web-design/ I also have a page at /web-design/price-cost-calculator/ In the second page the target keyword is "web design price" and "web design cost". Do I need to repeat the "web design" part in the sub folder, or is it sufficient to have it in the root folder? I.e., /web-design/price-cost-calculator/ or /web-design/web-design-price-cost-calculator/
